| PTO Co-Presidents' Letter | | Dear Friends,
Looks like we will be skipping spring altogether and moving right in to summer. I hope that you are all enjoying the heat as a break from the amazing amount of rain. It is starting to feel like the end of the school year and soon will be. Here are a few updates on recent Burr events.
The PTO held its final meeting of the year last week. The budget for next year was reviewed briefly as not all incoming and outgoing funds were completely tallied at that time. One piece of great news is that the PTO fundraising efforts succeeded in meeting our fundraising target for the year. This will allow all of the curriculum enrichment and social activities that the PTO has planned for next year to be fully funded. Thank you all for your support on this and special thanks go to Nancy Caulfield for leading our fundraising drive. Great job, Nancy! The PTO also completed election of new board members for next year. These are:
Co-President: Ted Vahey (dad of Aidan - grade 2 next year); Treasurer: Rachael McCarthy (mom of Kathryn & Mari - grade 4, Shannon - grade 1, & Thomas - grade K next year); Fundraising: Jessica Avery (mom of Maggie & Poppy - grades 4 & 1 next year); Secretary: Kim Susko (mom of Caitlin - grade K next year).
These volunteers will be replacing outgoing board members Steve DeJesus, Weiqun Shi, Nancy Caulfield, and Diana Fisher Gomberg respectively. Please join me in extending thanks to all outgoing board members and welcome to all incoming board members.
As usual, thanks for your support and see you around the Burr.
Tracy Carter and Steve DeJesus your Burr PTO Co-Presidents |
| Note from Ms. Johal re: Dogs at Burr | | Dogs are not allowed on school grounds during school hours, including pick up and drop off times. People with dogs are asked to remain on the non-school side of Pine Street.
Knowing where dogs may be reduces stress and fear considerably among children who are allergic to or afraid of dogs. In addition, since many children must walk along that sidewalk, in both directions, in order to travel to and from school, dog owners standing across the street are asked to be vigilant in ensuring that their dogs are not only leashed (as required by city law) but are specifically on a short lease and under their control at all times. |
Burr Parents Rock Out!
| | |
That will be the headline in the Tab following our next Parents Night Out! On Friday, June 10, the Burr PTO is happy to sponsor a Parents Night Out at The Skellig pub in Waltham, featuring our own PTO Co-President, Steve DeJesus and his band $3 Shirt. The large back room at the Skellig will open at 8 p.m. for Burr Community and friends only, where you can eat, drink, and be merry while enjoying the rocking tunes provided by the band and a short set by special guests, a band of young Newton Rockers, Levity. Tickets will be $10 at the door and all proceeds will benefit the PTO directly. Come and have some fun and celebrate the end of another successful school year at the Burr. Attendees at last years event raved about the band and its choice of popular rock hits from the 60's to the present. Don't miss this fun, parents only, event!

Classroom Garden Thanks and Summer Sign Ups
| | |

The Burr Garden Classroom is all planted and ready to GROW. We invite Burr families, friends, and neighbors to visit our garden regularly all summer long. Ask your children which garden they helped plant and try to visit it a few times over the growing season through the fall. The garden/playground area is a great place to see Burr friends--late afternoons and early evenings are a popular time and you'll likely run into some folks you know while visiting! Vegetables may be harvested during the summer as long as a child is with an adult (let's try to let the watermelons grow big, though!).
Many thanks to Diane Jaquith and all of our teachers for supporting the Garden Classroom. It's a lot of classes to schedule during a very busy time of year. We really appreciate your support! Marlene Gibson, Dana Hanson, and Jessica Avery planned the gardens and shopped for the plants and seeds. The following parents signed up to help during the classroom planting days last Thursday and Friday:
Rem Aligan, Kelly Brown, Tricia Bombara, Tracy Carter, Nancy Caulfield, Ann (HeaKyung) Chai, Rose Dieffenbach, Lisa Fisher, Andrea Flint, Debora Jackson, Valerie Jacoby, Stephanie Mamis, Billy McDonald, Michelle McKay, Pam McVey, Florence Nephtali, Jodi Schaefer, Jaye Schneider, Sarah Sian, Beth Tierney, Kim Tulimieri, Maureen Vahey, Jin Juan Wang, Yim Wong, Mei Zhang...and our apologies to anyone we may have missed...our brains were a little fried from the heat!
Jessica Avery coordinates our summer Burr Garden Club and is still looking for volunteer families. This group of parents is vital to the long-term success of our garden. When the kids arrive in the fall and see 10 foot sunflowers, giant watermelons, and riotous flower beds, it's because of YOUR work. Please contact Jessica at jvavery@yahoo.com to sign up for a full or partial week this summer. We'll give you all the directions you need to lend a hand. No green thumbs necessary!

Ticks & Lyme Disease
| | |

Lyme Disease is an illness that can cause flu-like symptoms, sore joints, and chronic heart and nervous system problems. It is diagnosed in people of all ages, including children. Lyme Disease is endemic throughout Massachusetts, meaning it's not something you get just on Cape Cod. You can get it from a tick acquired in your own backyard.
Lyme Disease is transmitted through the bite of a deer tick. Deer ticks range in size from a poppy seed to a sesame seed. They are most active during the warmer months, but can infect people at any time of year. They cling to vegetation, but cannot jump. Most are found in brushy, grassy or wooded habitats.
To prevent Lyme Disease, use a bug repellant with DEET or permethrin according to the instructions on the product label. DEET products should not be used on infants under two months of age and should be used in concentrations of 30 percent or less on older children. Permethrin products are intended for use on items such as clothing, shoes, and camping gear. They should not be applied to skin.
Check your body for ticks after being outside. Remove ticks as soon as you find them. The tick usually has to be attached for at least 24 hours before transmitting the bacteria that causes Lyme Disease. Check your body carefully after being in areas where ticks are often found.
Know the signs and symptoms of Lyme Disease. Treatment during the early stages often prevents more serious chronic health complications later. The most common early symptom is a rash where the tick was attached. It often, but not always, starts as a small red area that spreads outward, clearing up in the center so it looks like a donut. This is commonly known as a "bull's eye rash." However in many cases, a rash never appears.
Flu-like symptoms, such as fever, headache, stiff neck, sore and aching muscles and joints, fatigue and swollen glands may also occur. Most people are treated with antibiotics and recover. If you have been someplace likely to have ticks and you develop symptoms of Lyme disease, or any other disease carried by ticks, see your health care provider right away.
For more information about ticks, mosquitoes, and the diseases they cause, visit the Massachusetts Department of Public Health website at www.mass.gov/dph Click on "Public Health Fact Sheets" on the right side of the page and choose the topic you are interested in learning more about.
Have a happy and healthy summer!
