Upcoming Creative Arts & Sciences Programs

4th Grade

Lyn Littlefield Hoopes, Poet,

Wednesday, February 9th in the Classrooms

Poet and author, Lyn Littlefield Hoopes, will present her very popular two-day poetry writing workshop for the fourth graders. After sharing some of her own poetic works, Ms. Hoopes will lead the students on a journey of creating their own poetry by exploring the power of metaphor, rhythm, voice and pattern. In the process, they will learn about using strategies for creating poetry including imagination, line breaks, similes, the five senses and action and vivid verbs. Ms. Hoopes' beloved program emphasizes the joy of creating. The schedule for both days will be as follows:

9:45 -11:15 Ms. Robinson

11:20 -12:20 and 1:00-1:30 Ms. Cohen

1:30 -3:00 Ms. Taylor

Creative Arts and Sciences Programs are fully funded by the Burr PTO and are made possible by your generous donations.  If you have any questions or comments please feel free to contact:

PTO / Technology Meeting
This Wednesday Night - Feb. 9

Please come to the PTO meeting on Wednesday night, February 9,
6:30 - 8 p.m. to learn about all of the ways we are using technology to support our children at Burr. Please come to see the SMART Boards, Elmos and other technology tools we want all the children to have an opportunity to use in their classrooms. Representatives from the Newton Schools Foundation will also be at the meeting to share their goals for technology across the district. We will also share general updates on all of the latest and greatest PTO activities at Burr!

May Fair Committee - Call for Members!

Sick of the winter and want to start thinking of spring? We've got the cure! We are currently seeking volunteers to participate on the May Fair committee.

Have any interest in getting to meet other Burr parents, give back to the school and help plan a fun activity for your child and their classmates? Being a part of the May Fair committee is a fantastic way to do just that!

We welcome your help and it is an easy way for busy parents to get involved. For more information or to volunteer please contact Valerie Wastcoat valerie@valeriewastcoat.com or Maren Olsund marenoslund@gmail.com

Burr International Potluck - Planning Meeting

flag sphereSAVE THE DATE: Wednesday, February 16th
at 7 p.m.
in the Burr Library

The entire Burr Community is invited to the International Potluck Dinner on Sunday,
March 13th from 4:30-7 p.m.
at Newton North.  (More information to follow in your child's folder.)

In the meantime, anyone who is interested in helping organize the event is invited to a planning meeting on Wednesday, February 16th at 7 pm in the Burr Library. You do NOT have to attend this meeting to join us for the potluck dinner...this is really just if you are extra interested in helping out. (For the potluck event itself, anyone may attend and all you'll have to do is bring some food to share!)

For more information about the Burr International Potluck, please contact Dana Hanson danakhanson@gmail.com, Ann Langenfeld annlangenfeld@gmail.com, or Jackie Gelb jackie@jackiegelb.com.

BOOYA PJ DRIVE - Feb. 14-18

On February 14-18, BOOYA will be collecting new pairs of pajamas to donate to the Boston Bruins 4th Annual PJ Drive. Cradles to Crayons will then distribute the PJs to children in need. We will accept new PJs for babies to pre-teens. Please leave the PJs in the hamper in the Burr lobby from Monday February 14 to Friday February 18.

Don't have time to buy the PJs? You can donate $10 during the week of the PJ Drive and we will buy the PJs for you! To do so, put $10 (cash only, no checks please) in an envelope with PJ Drive written on the back that students can hand in to their teachers at school.  Questions? Contact Jeff Zabel at jeff.zabel@tufts.edu

Burr Friendtrips - Cosmic Bowling Party

cosmic bowlingPlease join Burr Friendtrips for a cosmic bowling party at the Boston Bowl on February 25th at 6:30. Witty Winter Wingding
(Adult Only Comedy Night)

FEBRUARY 12, 2011
7:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.
TURTLE LANE PLAYHOUSE

We all need a grown up night out - and there is nothing funny about that. (Look for details in your child's folder)

February Deadline - Make $$ for Burr with Box Tops!

The Box Tops for Education program is a great way to contribute to Burr and it's free!  Here's how you can help:

Clip the pink Box Tops logos from the packaging on items you already buy. Visit Box Tops for Education for a complete list of participating products - everything from Go-gurt to Cheerios.

Send them to school in your child's folder in an envelope marked "Box Tops" before the next deadline - February 28th. Please submit only the pink logos, not the entire box top. We send them in and get a check in return.  It's that simple!

FEBRUARY 28th IS OUR LAST CHANCE TO SUBMIT FOR THE SCHOOL YEAR so start your collection today!

Please e-mail Sherri Sonia at jimjack123@hotmail.com with any questions. Thank you!

Winter Driving Around Burr - Please NOTE
ice and snow warningThe roads are narrow and slippery and the number of cars at drop-off and pick-up has increased dramatically.  Please be patient - it is simply going to take longer to drop off and pick up your children at school, so allow extra time.

PLEASE avoid parking on Pine and Washburn - especially around the intersection!  The snow banks have made the road too narrow and we have been experiencing DAILY gridlock.  The buses get stuck and many cars have been damaged.

USE THE BLUE ZONE!  That's right - use the Blue Zone instead of trying to park your car.  This will keep traffic moving.

USE THE BIG BLUE ZONE!  Please enter Pine Street from River Street and get into the Live Parking line - it looks long, but it will move!  And this way your child can get into the car without crossing the street.

AVOID ENTERING PINE STREET FROM WASHBURN AVENUE!  You will block the bus and the traffic exiting the big Blue Zone.  There is absolutely no waiting to enter the small Blue Zone - you will be directed to proceed down Pine Street to the end of the main Blue Zone line.

PLEASE REPORT BLOCKED SIDEWALKS AND STREETS TO THE CITY OF NEWTON. You can call 311 from a landline or go to http://www.newtonma.gov/ and click the link for the 311 System.  Walking is still the best way to get to and from school, but we need the sidewalks clear to make it safe.

Thank you for your cooperation!

Health News

February is Heart Month
Do You Know Where Your Defibrillator Is?

medical symbolFebruary is American Heart Month, and the Newton Health Dept. has an information bulletin for Newton families which explains AEDs - automatic external defibrillators. AED's have been placed in all schools and many public buildings. This device has saved many lives by providing immediate, on-site capability to restart a heart in situations of cardiac arrest (when the heart stops beating).

For information about how they work, and about how you may need to respond in case of an emergency, visit the American Heart Association's website at www.heart.org or visit nurse Phillips for more information.
