PTO Co-Presidents Letter

Dear Friends,

Greetings from deep within the snow banks of sub-arctic Auburndale.  We hope that you are all managing the massive January snow falls and the fun-filled days off from school that they have provided.  Fun as these mountains of snow are, we hope also that you will exercise some extra caution and patience when walking or driving due to the narrow streets and reduced visibility at many of the corners in our community. Drop off and pickup have seen some traffic tie ups around Burr, and all we can do is try to allow some extra time for these activities.  Please stay safe through these wintry trials and we will all emerge happily in the spring.

The snow storms have not prevented us from having some interesting and exciting events.  Our annual Science and Engineering week was a great success with a wide variety of presentations from parents in the classrooms.  The children really enjoyed them.  Special thanks to Joanne Kotz and Ted Vahey for coordinating this year's event and to all of the parent presenters for their time and effort.

On the evening of Wednesday, Jan 21, friends and families were treated to the Winter Concert by 4th and 5th grade students in the auditorium at F.A. Day Middle school.  Performances by the 4th grade Strings, Band, and Chorus, the 5th Grade Band, and the Burr String Ensemble were presented to a packed house.  Special thanks to teachers Kate Ingram, Jeff O'Neil, and Ted DeColo for directing our students in some very impressive performances.  A great time was had by all.

On Monday Jan 31 at 6:30 there will be an orientation meeting for next yea'rs incoming kindergartners. If you will have a kindergarten student in the fall, please be sure to attend for information and the chance to meet up with other incoming K parents.

Our next PTO meeting is scheduled for Wed. Feb 9.  This will be the much delayed Technology themed meeting, featuring presentations on some of the pieces of technology that our teachers and students are using to improve the quality of education at Burr.  A demonstration of the interactive white boards in use in the 5th grade classes will be featured.  Please look for details in the coming weeks.

Mark your calendars for our PTO-sponsored Adult Comedy Night on Feb 12, 7-10 pm at the Turtle Lane Playhouse, 283 Melrose Street, Auburndale.  Come and have a few laughs with other parents and friends of Burr in a grown-ups only event that will surely help to shake off the winter blues.

Watch for more news on these upcoming events:

Friday, February 25th: Cosmic Bowling at Boston Bowl (evening event during Feb vacation)

Sunday, March 13th: Burr International Potluck Dinner at Newton North High School

Tuesday, March 15: Burr Book Swap

Please stay safe and sound through these slippery, wintry days.
See you around the Burr.

Steve DeJesus and Tracy Carter,
Your PTO Co-Presidents

Upcoming Creative Arts & Sciences Programs

3rd Grade

Native American Perspectives, TODAY in the Cafetorium with presentations to follow in the classrooms. This program is about the land, the animals, and the native peoples of North America.  Using a tipi as a classroom, certified teachers dressed in clothing of the western plains of the 1800's will present a hands-on learning experience about Native American history. Native American Perspectives is neither an assembly program nor a stage show.  Rather, it is an interactive learning experience.  Following the experience in the tipi, the program will then continue in the classrooms.  The schedule will be as follows:

In the Cafetorium:

8:45 -9:30 Ms. Canning

9:30 -10:15 Ms. Lawton

10:15 -11:00 Mrs. Silva

With presentations to follow in the classrooms:

11:30 - 12:00 Ms. Canning

12:00 - 12:30 Ms. Lawton

12:30 - 1:00 Mrs. Silva

4th Grade

Lyn Littlefield Hoopes, Poet,

Wednesday, February 2nd and

Wednesday, February 9th in the Classrooms

Poet and author, Lyn Littlefield Hoopes, will present her very popular two-day poetry writing workshop for the fourth graders.  After sharing some of her own poetic works, Ms. Hoopes will lead the students on a journey of creating their own poetry by exploring the power of metaphor, rhythm, voice and pattern. In the process, they will learn about using strategies for creating poetry including imagination, line breaks, similes, the five senses and action and vivid verbs.  Ms. Hoopes' beloved program emphasizes the joy of creating.  The schedule for both days will be as follows:

9:45 -11:15 Ms. Robinson

11:20 -12:20 and 1:00-1:30 Ms. Cohen

1:30 -3:00 Ms. Taylor

Send them to school in your child's folder in an envelope marked "Box Tops" before the next deadline - February 28th. Please submit only the pink logos, not the entire box top. We send them in and get a check in return.  It's that simple!
