PTO Co-Presidents Letter

Dear Burr Families,

Well, it is starting to feel like Fall here in the Burr community and Fall means the kick off of our major fundraising activity for the year, the Gift for Burr campaign.

Hopefully you have already received a letter and pamphlet describing this fundraiser in your child's folder. Additional information about the campaign, detailing exactly why we are raising funds in this way and what those funds will support, can be found on the Burr PTO web site ( click here ).

For the 2010-2011 school year, Gift for Burr will serve as the main means by which the PTO raises the funds required to provide the fun activities and wide range of enrichment that make Burr such a vibrant community. Our goal this year is to raise $35,000 for our school and achieve 100% participation from the Burr community by December 1, 2010.

To reach this goal, we are asking each family to make a tax-deductible contribution of $150 to the PTO by sending a check, donating online ( click here ) or committing to raise the funds as a family. Families who are able and inspired to contribute more are encouraged to do so, and all gifts - no matter how big or small - are greatly needed and appreciated.

Here are a few facts about the Gift for Burr campaign:

  • The Gift for Burr campaign began in 2007 and has been the most inclusive and universally supported fundraising effort in PTO history.
  • In each of the past five years, the Burr PTO has infused an average of $45,000 into our school, an amount that exceeds Burr's entire annual operating budget from the city.
  • The 2010-2011 PTO Budget commits to providing over $42,000 to Burr School to benefit EVERY Burr student and family. Every student uses the computers and other technology equipment, the playground, the classroom supplies, Creative Arts and Sciences programming, and field trip subsidies that PTO funds provide.
  • Every family is invited to enjoy our Halloween Family Fun Night, the World Cultures Festival, the May Fair, and other popular community events made possible by the PTO.
  • Because of this fundraiser, we want you to know that this year your favorite Burr students will not be asking you to buy wrapping paper or magazines or candles or bulbs (plant or light) or cookie dough or chocolates - or even Tupperware. And, of course, donations of any size from your friends and family will also be gladly accepted!

Thank you--and see you at school,

Steve & Tracy

Gift for Burr is Underway!
 Gift for Burr
The Gift for Burr campaign is off to a terrific start - let's keep the momentum going! Please send a check in your child's backpack today, or visit Gift for Burr to donate online.

Help us reach our goal of $35,000 and achieve 100% participation by December 1st! We can't do it without your help.

Thank you!
Important Reminder
After school plans should always be made BEFORE the school day begins. Please DO NOT call the office to ask Ms. Albano to give messages to your child about after school plans unless it is an emergency. With 391 students in the building, taking and delivering messages overwhelms the office and disrupts classroom learning. Please make arrangements and tell your child what these are, before sending him/her to school. Any changes in dismissal plans should always be communicated to the classroom teacher.
Welcome Back From Creative Arts and Sciences

Now that fall is officially here, the Creative Arts and Sciences Committee wanted to take a moment to say hello and to give you a glimpse into what we have in store for your children this year.  With the support and guidance of Ms. Johal and our dedicated teachers, we have been busy scheduling programs intended to support and enhance your child's classroom experience.

Some of these programs, like our beloved authors Irene Smalls (1st grade) and Barbara O'Conner (4th grade), are old favorites.  But, we are very excited to announce that we are bringing in a variety of new programs this year.  For example, the 3rd grade will seeing the author Lita Judge to talk about how she "researched" and brought the historical fiction book Pennies for Elephants to life, inspiring the students to take an interest in local news and events in their global community.

The 5th grade will be seeing a theater arts program entitled Phebe Emerson: Eyewitness to a Revolution.  As the wife of Concord's minister in 1775, Phebe Emerson witnessed the famous battle that took place there in April 1775.  In a convincing historical impersonation, Jan Turnquist will recount both the battle itself as well as the events leading up to that fateful day in history.

Finally, we are thrilled to announce that on April 5, 2011, Ruby Bridges will be visiting Burr.  As the first African American child to enter the newly desegregated New Orleans school system in 1960, Ruby Bridges is truly living history.  She has a new K-1 program that we will be seeing this year, as well as a riveting program for grades 2-5 in which she blends her powerful, autobiographical experience with a history and civics lesson.  She is without a doubt one of the most highly regarded presenters in Newton and we can't wait for our students and our faculty to experience her.

So, watch your child's folder for more specific information about upcoming programs. In the meantime, we want to thank you for your continued support of Creative Arts and Sciences and we wish you all a wonderful year!

Upcoming Creative Arts and Sciences Program

Creative Arts and Sciences Programs are fully funded by the Burr PTO and are made possible by your generous donations.  If you have any questions or comments please feel free to contact us.

Traffic Safety Week, October 12

This week is Traffic Safety Week at Burr.  Parent volunteers (in orange safety vests) will be in the Blue Zones and "No Parking" areas at drop-off and pick-up to help keep the Blue Zone moving and the "No Parking" areas clear. The purpose of Traffic Safety Week is to demonstrate how smoothly - and most importantly, safely - pick-up and drop-off can be when everyone follows the rules. Please remember that these volunteers are parents like you who are giving up their time to help keep all of our children safe!

What does it mean to "keep the Blue Zone moving?"

It means pulling up as far as possible before letting your children out.  It means limiting any distractions (like cell phones!)  At drop-off your children should have all their things ready to go.  Parents should not be getting out of the car to open or close doors, to hand kids their backpacks, lunches, or musical instruments, or to impart last minute instructions.  At pick-up, your child needs to get into the car when you arrive in the pick-up area and buckle up so you can go.  The Blue Zone is not the place to chat with friends, plan "play dates", or debate after school plans.

Why is it important to "keep the No Parking areas clear?"

These areas have been designated as "No Parking" by the City of Newton for an important reason - to allow vehicles to pass safely in both directions.  These areas are marked clearly with signs and yellow curbs.  If the sign says "No Parking" it means you can't park there.  If the curb is yellow, it means you can't park there.  By Massachusetts law, "No Parking" also means "No Stopping"; it means you can't wait there.  (Please note: the entire area near the fire hydrant, from the neighbor's driveway to the school driveway, has a yellow curb.  It doesn't matter how far you are from the hydrant - you can't park there.)

The Burr Safe Routes website has complete information on using the Blue Zone and about traffic safety around Burr, including a color-coded map of the area that you can view and print - please give a copy to anyone who picks up or drops off your child.

If you have any questions, please email:  BurrSafeRoutes@gmail.com

Buy Your Groceries - And Give to Burr!  Program Underway!
The Stop & Shop A+ school rewards program is underway! The program allows a portion of every purchase to be sent right to Burr School when you use your rewards card, but we need to get people enrolled and matched with Burr asap!

There are two Stop & Shops nearby, one on Pleasant St (off North St.) and one on Watertown St. near Watertown Square.  But you can shop at *any* Stop & Shop to accumulate points.  To join is simple: 1) Request a Stop & Shop rewards card if you don't have one.  2) E-mail your Stop & Shop rewards card number to Margaret Crook at gmcrook@rcn.com and she can sign you up, or 3) Click here to register your own card.

If you have a Stop & Shop rewards card number but don't know what it is, you can call the Stop & Shop hotline at 877-366-2668 and someone will help you. Do your grandparents, parents, aunts, or uncles shop at Stop & Shop?  Send their rewards card numbers too! Their purchases can also benefit Burr!

*Note* the card number should be a 13 digit number. It usually begins with a 22 before the barcode and then a single digit after the barcode.  You need the number on your actual card and not the one on a store receipt.

Election Day Bake Sale: Volunteers Needed
It's that time of year again!  The sun is setting early, the leaves are changing, there are campaign signs up in people's yards and election day is coming.  It is almost time for Burr PTO Election Day Bake Sale.  Volunteers are needed for the following:

1) Bakers/Buyers/Cooks:  People who can provide goods that can be sold, and it doesn't matter whether they come from a store or out of your oven.  Individually wrapped is always best.  Please label items with nuts!  Hate to bake?  How about cooking a meal?  Last year we sold prepared meals with great success.  Lasagna, baked mac and cheese, any reheat-able casserole would be great!

2) Visual Artists: To make signs to advertise the fair.  SIGNS MADE BY KIDS ARE FANTASTIC.

3) Coffee: Someone who can donate a box or two of joe or get a company to donate.

4) Sellers: The bake sale is open the whole time the polls are open. Slots are usually one hour, but can be longer or shorter. Your children are welcome to help you out. (Good practice for everyday math skills!).

Questions or to volunteer for a time slot, please email Erika Drezner at egdrezne@yahoo.com.

4th Grade Newton Girls Travel Basketball Tryouts

The Newton Travel Basketball program plays competitive basketball (4th through 8th grade) in the Metrowest Basketball League which includes 46 area towns. We stress teaching basketball skills, sportsmanship, and fun in a competitive basketball league environment. Players who live in Newton or attend Newton schools through the METCO program are eligible to play in the league.

Tryouts are held on October 12th and October 18th at Brown Middle School from 6-7:30 PM

Girls should plan to attend both tryouts. There are oftentimes 2 or 3 Newton team entries in an age category in varying skill levels of play, broken up by divisions. The Metrowest league holds practices 2 nights per week and has games and tournaments on weekends. For more info, please contact: Michael Clebnik, michaelclebnik@verizon.net
