From Ms. Bencal's Desk

Ms. Bencal
Dear Families,
I hope that many of you were able to spend time at our school art show last week. Atlantis came alive for its grade K-5 creators and for its appreciative visitors.

Ms. Jaquith employs the philosophy and practice of "choice-based art" in order to help students create the very individualized work that you saw. In this milieu, the job of the artist is to have an art idea and find the best medium to express it, or, to use a material which leads to an idea. Ms. Jaquith has said, "Teaching art through choice-based centers enables every student to work from his/her strengths and to develop confidence in art class. Our philosophy is simple: The child is the artist. This results in very personalized learning which, I believe, is among the many fine goals of the Newton Public Schools." It is this approach that inspires Burr students and results in the fine work that you saw in our art show this year. Students are so fortunate to be able to choose among such varied media to create their artwork: they may paint, draw, weave, work with metal, work with clay, do photography, or make I-movies. And it is so important that the children have an opportunity to explore, create and collaborate, regularly, in art; these are truly 21st century skills at work. Thank you for this wonderful event, Ms. Jaquith!

We sent "Parent Information Forms" home to you on April 26 to use if you have information you would like to give us as we begin student placement into classes for next year. The due date for these is today, May 3. At my parent-principal coffee this Friday, May 7, I will review the process that we follow as we do placement later in May and in June.

Lunch Shift: As you know we are experimenting with having the students go out to recess first at lunchtime and then come in to eat their lunches. We have only been trying this for 2 days, so it is too early to tell if this shift is preferable to our former schedule. We have already made some adjustments to the plan, and we will continue to monitor the lunches to make sure that the students have time to eat. So far we have noticed that the lunchtimes in the cafeteria are quieter, and the students are hungrier when they are eating, so they seem to be eating more. The staff and school council will review this experiment at their meetings in May.

Grade 3 parents: You are invited to a presentation on the Instrumental Music Program that begins in grade 4 on Tuesday, May 18, at 8:30 AM in the cafeteria. The presentation will last 45 minutes to an hour. Mr. Richard King, Newton's K-8 Fine Arts Coordinator will be the presenter.

Teacher Appreciation Week: This week is Teacher Appreciation Week. The PTO and room parents are organizing events for this week. Children and families will be encouraged to make cards or drawings or to write notes or poems for their teachers as a way to thank and acknowledge them; teachers truly appreciate these words of thanks.

Teachers' jobs have become increasingly complex and demanding over the last several years. We now have standards-based education and progress reports, state testing, the No Child Left Behind Act, new district initiatives such as developing Professional Learning Communities and teaching students 21st Century Skills, as well as full inclusion and the charge of meeting all students' needs. Teachers spend a great deal of time planning thoughtfully, conferring regularly with assistants and specialists, then teaching each lesson skillfully, with each student's achievement level, strengths, weaknesses and learning style in mind. This happens daily. I join you in acknowledging and thanking our very talented, dedicated teaching staff. I feel very fortunate to work with a group of people who care so much about the growth and development of the "whole" child and who teach with skill, creativity, intelligence, reflection, and compassion.

Warm weather and clothing: As the warm weather approaches, we ask that you please support our expectations for appropriate student dress at school. Spaghetti straps/ tank tops, bare midriffs, low cut pants, very short skirts and bare feet are not appropriate dress for school. Even many styles of sandals and flip flops can be dangerous on the playground. If your child is not dressed appropriately, please know that we will contact you. We appreciate your support in reminding your child of these expectations.

Please remember that the 3rd, 4th and 5th graders will be taking math MCAS tests in May. The fifth grade will also take science MCAS tests. The schedule is:
Grade 5: May 10, May 12, May 14, May 17.
Grade 3 and Grade 4: May 19, May 21 from May 14 through June 1.

Thank you to our Blue Zone Safety Week parent volunteers who did a nice job of reviewing the rules and expectations we have for drop off in the morning and pick up in the afternoon. These rules and expectations are in place to make sure that all children are as safe as possible at the start and close of school. Thank you for following the correct procedures and for reviewing these with your children and with any friends and family members who use the blue zones.

The School Committee determined that the last day of school for students for this year will be Monday, June 21. The last day is a half-day; dismissal on the last day will be at 12:00 noon for elementary schools. The Burr School grade 5 graduation will be on Friday, June 18 at 9:00 AM.

Please remember that Thursday, May 6 is an early release day. All elementary students are dismissed at 12:30 on May 6. I hope to see many of you at the last principal/parent coffee of the year on Friday, May 7, at our May 19 PTO meeting or at other end-of-the-year fundraisers or community celebrations.

Sincerely,
Cindy Bencal

Final PTO Meeting of the Year - Wednesday,  May 19 ***Call for PTO board nominations!***
It's transition time on the Burr PTO board. In a couple of weeks, we'll vote in our new board for the 2010-2011 school year (please note date change to Wednesday, May 19 - hope to see you all there).

We need some fresh faces for '10-'11!  Some folks find their way onto the board because they're already heavily involved in all things at the school, but others jump in with no particular involvement whatsoever.  We really need both types to make the machine run. But, it's a bit of a challenge for us to find "new" people because we might not know you yet!  If you are interested in meeting other parents, making a statement to your kids about your investment in their school, and having FUN, we want you. Now. The board meets monthly and works closely with our principal (yes, this is a great year to join the board because you will be on the first board to work with Mindy Johal!).

Remember -- ANY parent who is interested in shaping the way events are run next year at Burr is more than welcome to throw his or her hat in the ring.  Let's face it, a lot of times we don't feel comfortable nominating ourselves. We really rely on the entire school community to provide us with some leads on prospects.  Do you feel that there's some untapped talent lurking around?  Do you know a parent with a professional skill set that seems in sync with our needs?  Has your kid attended a birthday party that was well-organized by a parent and a lot of fun for the kids?  Is your child on a team with a coach who is a great communicator?  Let the nominating committee know and we'll follow up.

Have someone(s) in mind?  If you would like to nominate yourself or someone else, please get in touch with members of this year's Nominating Committee (Steve DeJesus, Nancy Caulfield, or Kelly Brown) by this Friday, May 7.

Here are the job descriptions of this year's available positions.  All are two year terms (next spring, Fundraising, Treasurer, and Co-President slots become available).

PTO Co-President
The two co-presidents serve on the PTO board and oversee general operations of the PTO. Specific duties include: organizing and running school-wide PTO meetings, representing Burr on the citywide PTO Council, meeting regularly with the principal to plan and coordinate events/programs, writing monthly Burr Bulletin communications, and generally assisting Burr teachers and staff to make Burr the best it can be.

Steve DeJesus will be continuing his two year term as co-president next year and we have identified an interested candidate (Tracy Carter) to replace Dana Hanson.  However, the position is open to anyone who is willing and interested in it.  Please feel free to email Steve or Dana if you would like more information about being a PTO co-president at Burr.

Secretary
The Secretary is responsible for developing agendas for PTO meetings, and coordinating any required AV or other equipment needs for the meetings. The Secretary takes minutes at the PTO meetings and ensures they are posted on the website by our PTO webmaster.  The Secretary also maintains a current copy of the Burr PTO Operating Policies and related documents and ensures that all necessary documents are filed with the Secretary of State (such as newly elected Board officers).  Please email Kelly Brown if you have questions about the Secretary position.

Communications Coordinator
The Communications Coordinator oversees the Burr Bulletin and other PTO emails, the www.burrpto.org  website, and the Burr directory.  Specific tasks include finalizing the email distribution lists, assisting the Bulletin and Directory coordinators as necessary, and helping to recruit additional volunteers in these areas as needed. The Communications Coordinator is also responsible for running the School Council elections each spring.  Please email Allison Sharma if you would like to learn more about the Communications position.

Community Building and Academic Support Coordinators
The Community Building and Academic Support Coordinators have similar responsibilities, but in different "tracks" of PTO activities.  Community Building includes things like: new family pair-ups, Halloween Night, World Cultures, May Fair, etc.  Academic Support includes things like Creative Arts and Sciences, library volunteers, Color Day, Art Show, etc.  Each Coordinator is in regular communication with the 5-10 chairs of committees under their area of focus, and assists the coordinators with things like Burr Bulletin updates, recruiting additional volunteers as needed, and communicating issues and concerns to the PTO co-presidents. Please email Lizbeth Heyer if you have questions about the Academic Support or Diana Fisher-Gomberg if you have questions about Community Building.
Library Gift Book Sale - GOING ON NOW!
kids reading library booksAt the end of the school year, many parents and students want to show their appreciation for our Burr teachers, specialists and staff members. The Library Gift Book Sale was developed to help families show their thanks while complying with the Newton Schools "No Gift" policy. This way, you and your child can help the Burr School Library and at the same time tell the Burr teachers, specialist, staff, students, class, parents, or anyone what a great job they've done by participating in the Library Gift Book Sale.

Please visit the cart to browse and purchase books. It will be located  in the front of the school before and after school during the week of May 3-May 7.

Or place your order on line here and drop payments off in the Library Gift Book Sale box located in the Main office.
Massachusetts Walk to School Day - Wednesday, May 5th
This Wednesday May 5th will be a great day to walk to school! Burr is joining with the other 15 Newton elementary schools to participate in Massachusetts Walk to School Day.

Make plans to leave the car at home and walk with friends and neighbors!  We'll have two "Walking Parties" - one from the east and one from the west - that you can join anywhere along the way, or you can start your own! (Click Burr Safe Routes to School to see a map with the routes that you can save and print.)  If you can't walk with your kids, try to arrange for them to walk with other families in your neighborhood, or to be dropped off at the house of a friend who is walking!  Taking the bus also reduces the number of cars on the road and in the Blue Zone, and is a great GREEN option!

Kids will receive a special memento when they arrive at Burr, along with the satisfaction of knowing they came to school in a safe, healthy, and environmentally-friendly way!

From Ms. J and the Students of Burr School
Newton Serves Thanks - Did you notice a few changes around Burr this week??
Did you see less sand on the stairs? Did you smell the freshly mulched beds? Did you hear someone say, "Oh my aching back"?
Check out the garden, flower beds, planters out front, the playground... you'll see that there is no garbage on the ground and none in the compost bin!  Things are looking shipshape for Ms. Bencal's Party, so let's try to keep it that way!

The following folks came together on April 25th and made a HUGE impact:

The Hanson/Burba family, The Mulchy's, Tom Mc Bride, Kaida Wu, The Lau's, Margaret Braccio, The Agam's, The Lee's, The Carter's, The Mamis's, The Shibuya's, The Burke's, The Nielson's, The McCarthy's, The Crook's, The Gallivan's, The Baker/Liu family, Vicky Gifford, Jacob Biwite, The Viveiros's, Alan Lan, Debbie Franco, Mahal Davenport, Jacob Horwitz, Conor Ebbs, The Brown's, The Hoch's and The Kiel-Zabel family

The Photocopy Squad: Help and THANKS!

It's a busy time of year in the Burr main office--lots of photocopying jobs to be done! This is a reminder that we can use some extra help through these final weeks of school!  If you'd like to help with some photocopying the next time you have a spare moment at school, look for the pile of jobs and the sign-in clipboard above the teacher mailboxes.

Many thanks to all the parents who have been helping out with photocopying all year long.  It only takes a minute of time here and there to help out, but our teachers and staff have come to rely on our assistance.  This is an excellent example of many hands making for light work.  Thanks to Lisa Dallaire for organizing the crew and to these folks for lending a hand: Lakshmi Kadambi, Colette Burke, Nancy Caulfield, Tracy Carter, Bijal Dalal, Pam McVey, Diana Fisher-Gomberg and Jodi Schaefer.  (And, as always, our apologies to anyone we may have inadvertently left off our list).
