The Growth Screening Program will be taking place, over the next few weeks - March 29 through April 9, 2010.

Massachusetts General Laws require that public schools collect height and weight measurements of students.  These measurements are used to calculate the Body Mass Index (BMI) which is a screening tool to monitor students' growth and development.

Your child's screening will be supervised by the school nurse and each student's privacy will be respected at all times.  Your child's height, weight, and BMI measurements are strictly confidential and the results will be recorded in your child's school health record.  The results will be mailed to you by U.S. mail.  Please share the results of the Growth Screening with your child's healthcare provider.

If you choose not to have your child participate in the Growth Screening Program, you must contact the school nurse. Please provide written documentation of height and weight measurements taken within the past twelve months by your child's healthcare provider.

Simple standards for a healthy lifestyle include:
  • Eating at least 5 fruits and vegetables per day
  • Spending no more than 2 hours per day on "screen time" (TV, video games, computer use, etc.)
  • Getting at least 1 hour of physical activity per day
In Newton, we address our students' health and wellness with a comprehensive approach that includes health screenings, physical activity programs, nutrition, and health education.

"Fostering Creativity in the Burr Art Program"
Please join us in Boston for the next PTO meeting on Wednesday April 7th

"Fostering Creativity in the Burr Art Program"
Diane Jaquith, Burr Elementary School Art Specialist

Come hear beloved Burr art specialist Diane Jaquith ("Ms. J" to the kids) describe her unique "choice-based" art program at Burr and share the educational philosophy documented in her recently-published book (co-authored with Katherine Douglas) Engaging Learners Through Artmaking: Choice-Based Art Education.

It will be an opportunity to hear an in-depth account of our kids' experience in art class at Burr:
  • Why teaching for artistic behavior engages students to self-direct their learning, take risks, and reflect on their artwork
  • How children's artistic behaviors are nurtured at multiple studio centers
  • Why engineering is encouraged in art class
  • Preparation for our annual K-5 Art Show in late April
The meeting will be held at the Yawkey Club of Roxbury (Boys and Girls Club), a state-of-the-art recreational and educational facility (plenty of on-site parking, too!).  We will have pizza and childcare available at the meeting--kids love the "games room" at the club!  In order to ensure the appropriate quantity of pizza and childcare, kindly RSVP as soon as you can to Dana Hanson.

Box Tops Bonanza!

Many thanks to all of you terrific coupon-clippers. Last month the Box Tops for Education program made $300 for Burr! Let's keep up the good work! Please keep sending in Box Tops in your child's folder through the end of the year and we will get them ready for our next deadline.

Some helpful things to keep in mind:
** Please check the date on each Box Top coupon to be sure it has not expired.
** Please clip or tear around the actual coupon, rather than turning in the entire package top. This will greatly reduce postage (and the workload of our volunteers).

Visit  Box Tops for Education for a complete list of participating products, and keep on clipping! Thank you!
