PTO Co-Presidents Letter
|
|
Hello Burr folks,
As with any month at Burr, March has been chock full of great
events and activities. We'd like
to give our thanks to the PTO folks who swept us out of the late winter
doldrums right into spring: -
Thanks to Jean Giglio and all the families who attended our
annual Burr skating event in early March.
In an unfortunate and inexplicable turn of events, the rink managers
booked a hockey game during our ice time (even though Jean had confirmed everything ahead of time).
We had lots of disappointed skaters and one extremely disappointed event
coordinator at the rink at showtime...thanks to everyone for their patience and
understanding in the heat of the moment.
Rest assured, Jean followed up with the rink and not only secured our
full refund, but also negotiated a free extra hour of ice skating for our event
next year (3/6/11 for you calendar-keeping types).
- Thanks to Amanda Loftus and Tracy Carter for helping to
update the Burr Quilt project. It
is terrific to have this wonderful visual representation of all of all the
members of our Burr community! If
you have not yet made a quilt square, please contact Amanda or Tracy for how to join in the fun.
-
Thanks to Erika Drezner for organizing a fantastic parent
panel for our March PTO meeting about "What is Inclusion". Sheilarae Lau also participated in the
meeting along with three other NPS parents from other schools. Parent panels are always great for
learning more about all of our kids' experiences at school.
- Thanks to Lin Themelis and her volunteer team of book
collectors, sorters, and stackers for our annual Burr Book Swap. If you can believe it, our Burr kids
brought in close to 6000 books--that's a whole lot of swaps! We hope that all the kids are enjoying their new reads.
- Thanks to Nancy Caulfield for organizing our Burr evening
out at the Chateau Restaurant in Waltham.
It was great fun to have a night out with everyone while bringing in some
extra funds for the PTO.
- Finally, many thanks to EVERYONE who participated in our
World Cultures Festival. It was
another amazing celebration of our many cultures that comprise the Burr
community. There are so many
people to thank that we are still compiling our lists to make sure that we
thank everyone who volunteered to make the day a success! But for the moment,
we'd like to recognize our co-chairs Jackie Gelb and Ann Langenfeld for helping to organize the many folks who made it all happen.
As we head into our spring months, we thought we'd provide
you with a few save-the-dates and reminders:
Wednesday, April 7: Annual PTO meeting in Boston. The entire Burr community is invited to
join us for a discussion of "The Arts at Burr". We'll have pizza and childcare on site. More details to come...
Sunday April 21: Newton Serves on the grounds of Burr School
Wednesday, April 28: Evening reception for the Burr Student
Art Show
Saturday, May 9: May Fair!!! Folks, we're looking for all sorts of volunteers...especially
anyone with crafty skills. If you
are able to donate some time for this beloved Burr spring tradition, please
contact Alex Swan.
Friday, May 28: Family evening at the Red Sox game fundraiser
Tuesday, June 1: Burr Color Day
Friday, June 4: Retirement Party for Cindy Bencal
Saturday, June 19: Parents' Night out at the Skellig Pub in
Waltham
There will be MUCH more information on each of these
individual events as they come along, but spring is such a busy time that we
thought we would provide you with some of these dates early on.
We'll learn about the date for the last day of school (and
therefore 5th grade graduation) after April vacation. (NPS makes the determination after the
chance of snow days is long gone...we're assuming there won't be any snow days
from this point forward, but you never know!)
Let's hope spring is here to stay,
Steve & Dana Burr PTO Co-Prezes |

Tuesday, March 23rd 3:30 to 4:45 pm in the library All Welcome We will celebrate the success of the 5th Annual Burr World Cultures Festival 2010! Families enjoyed visiting 29 countries (the most ever!) presented by Burr's own international families, the participatory dance program, the parade of flags, the school song sung by Ms. Bencal, Ms. Denney, and Burr children, as well as the yummy international teatime. Additionally, we will begin planning for next year's International Potluck Dinner and evaluate this year's festival for any changes/tweaking of the event that we will need to prepare for the World Cultures Festival 2012! We will also review the updated family quilt, the second set of flags purchased for the school, the inclusion banners that have been posted in the stairway, and get a METCO Burr Buddies update. Additionally, we will talk about the great book group that met to exchange views on So Sexy So Soon. Feel free to bring any additional news or questions to the meeting. We look forward to seeing you and continuing with our plans for this year! For more information, please contact, Ann Langenfeld ( annlangenfeld@gmail.com), RHD Committee Co-Chair. |

Register now for Newton Kindergarten Soccer Spring 2010 - Deadline March 31
|
|
|
All children entering kindergarten or first grade in Newton in the fall of 2010 are invited to join the program which has been introducing children to soccer since 1993. The program is co-ed and focuses on fun while developing confidence as children learn the basics of the game. Teams are typically organized by elementary school so this is a great opportunity to meet other families from your school and give your child a chance to make friends before starting kindergarten. Kindergarten Soccer will meet on 8 Saturday mornings, April 24 - June 19 (except 5/29) at Richardson Field. Kindergartners will play from 9:15 to 10:15, and pre-kindergartners will play from 10:45 to 11:45. Kindergarten Soccer is run by parent volunteers and we need parents to help as coaches and assistant coaches. No previous knowledge of soccer is required. The fee for Kindergarten Soccer is $60. (Financial assistance is available and is confidential). Your child will receive a team t-shirt, as well as a medal or trophy at the end of the program. Every child must bring a size 3 soccer ball and wear shin guards each week. The deadline to submit your registration is March 31, 2010. Enrollment is limited and handled on a first come first serve basis. You will be contacted by a coach the week prior to the first session.
