| Building Community: What is inclusion?
Panel Presentation by NPS Parents Sheilarae Lau, Joan Schulz, Shaul Berechman, Carole Slipowitz and Erika Drezner
Hear their stories as parents of children with learning and other differences. What does it mean when your child has a diagnosis or when s/he doesn't? What do you tell to whom and how? How do you fit into the school community? We hope you will join us. |
Time is running out...for the ANNUAL BURR BOOK SWAP on March 16th. |
|
You have one more week to send your gently used children's and youth books to school in a bag MARKED CLEARLY with your child's name and teacher's name. Leave them at the entrance to the classroom in the morning and we will collect them.
OUR LAST COLLECTION DATE WILL BE ON MARCH 15th. Remember, two books are swapped for one new one. EVERYBODY gets a book, whether they have handed in books or not, and teachers and support teaching staff take their pick once kids are done.
VOLUNTEER HELP APPRECIATED, especially for setting up the swap, staffing it and breaking down.

Upcoming Creative Arts and Sciences Programs |
|
5th Grade Museum of Science, Weather: Wind, Water and Temperature, Monday, March 8th at 9:30 in the Cafetorium
In this interactive presentation, a presenter from the Museum of Science will demonstrate to the 5th graders how air, water, light and heat interact with each other to create weather. Using sensors that create real-time data, students will learn how different materials on Earth heat and cool. With the help of a model cloud chamber, the presenter will demonstrate how clouds form high in Earth's atmosphere. Finally, students will be amazed to see a hot air balloon lift off inside the school.
Please join us for this wonderful presentation!
Creative Arts and Sciences Programs are fully funded by the Burr PTO and are made possible by your generous donations. If you have any questions or comments please feel free to contact: Mary Sava: jmsava@rcn.com Felicia Falchuk: feliciafalchuk@yahoo.com

| BURR GREEN TEAM UPDATE: |
|
Great start in the effort to reduce trash, clean up the environment, save money and feed the hungry! We are happy to report that we have reduced our daily trash totals from 7 bags per day to 4. That's a 57% reduction! In just 10 days, we also have re-directed 250 milks, assorted cheese sticks and un-eaten fruit from land-fills to local food pantries. Not a bad start... A few details: · Some tables produce NO trash and NO recycling thanks to all the Tupperware, cloth napkins, reusable water bottles, canteens and thermoses in lunch boxes. · Kids who buy school lunches are actively recycling paper and Styrofoam trays. · Judging by all the green shirts, hats, sweaters, skirts and hair morale is high! We have noticed a few things in the cafeteria that as parents concern us... · About 25 milks a day are never even opened. These are brought to food pantries. · About 30 are opened and have one obligatory sip taken from them. The rest is dumped out! · Approximately 15 cheese sticks are tossed daily, and 15 apples have one bite taken or just aren't eaten at all! So if you can, please try to... · Talk to your child when ordering lunches. Why buy it, if they are not going to eat it? · If you pack lunch, ask your child to help you make healthy (and environmentally sound) choices. · Tell your child to put uneaten food back in their lunch box so they can eat it as a snack later. · Discuss how not wasting food is good for them and good for the environment! · Make it fun, get them involved. And don't forget to wear GREEN on Wednesdays!
We need parent volunteers to help us expand our 4-R's program at Burr...
Capri-sun: Help Louisa Hunt with this very successful money raising program which needs additional volunteers to maintain and grow. We'd like to start recycling chip bags as well: http://www.terracycle.net/
Composting: Take our land-fill waste to zero. Help Jessica Avery this spring with a composting program for the garden!
Food-shelter coordinators: Help Diana Fisher-Gomberg and Eric Bobby expand our cafeteria unused food donations by two days per week. We need two more parents to make weekly runs to local food shelters. Please go to http://greendecade.org/events.html for some COOL, FREE & GREEN events happening this month. We would like to thank all the volunteers and staff members that have helped us get this up and running and for all the kids for participating! |
