Greetings PTO friends, It's been a while since we last had a
co-prez check-in with all of you. And, as always, there's been tons of
PTO biz cooking at the Burr. As such, there are many folks we'd like to give
thanks to along the way: - A whole gaggle of BOOYA kids, Jeff Zabel, and Mr. Gaita took action
to run a collection for Haiti relief last week. Many thanks to
everyone who donated spare change, a dollar here or there, and/or
larger contributions to support the work of Partners In Health. Working together, we raised over $2000 over three days. Thank you all for your generosity!
- Michelle Fineblum, Michael Gevelber, Joanne Kotz, and Ken Kotz ran
a terrific Science and Engineering week. Many thanks to the ALL the
other parents (see below) who made time in their busy schedules to come by school
to share their work, hobbies, and scientific passions with the kiddos.
And, again, thanks to Michelle and Michael for creating and leading our
program for so many years. You will be missed next year!
- Maeve Bartlett, Tricia Bombara and Nancy Caulfield and our
Lexington Street crossing guard, Angela, attended a City of Newton
Traffic Council meeting last month and advocated for a School Zone
designation at the Lexington Street crosswalk. Their testimony helped
convince the council to approve the school zone and we look forward to
more signage and painted road designations there in the future.
- Sheilarae Lau once again ran our annual holiday Literature Fund for
our teachers. Thanks to Sheilarae and everyone who made a contribution
to the fund, our Burr teachers enjoyed about $1800 worth of gift
certificates to New England Mobile Bookfair for classroom supplies.
- Stephanie Mamis, Carey Ranta, and many parent volunteers have
been visiting the third, fourth, and fifth grades to present the
Understanding Our Differences curriculum. Thanks to Stephanie and
Carey for all their hard work to recruit and train volunteers and to
organize so many presentations for our kids.
- Erika Drezner, Nancy Caulfield and a VAST number of other Burr parents
pulled together one of our most successful bake sales in recent years.
Folks purchased and baked goodies, worked the table, and bought a ton
of goodies--the result was a draw of over $1200!
- Marni Caputo, Rachel Freed, and Junko Shibuya are off to the races
on the principal search. Thanks for putting in the meeting time,
careful review of candidates, and for going the extra mile to provide
us with updates on your progress along the way. We are thrilled to
have these folks representing the Burr parent community in the
principal search!
- Ave Myers and Judy Hogan organized a successful "FriendTrip" for
Burr Boston and Newton families this past weekend. Our annual Boston
University pool party was great fun and provided an opportunity for folks to see one another outside of school. See you all at Boston
Bowl over February vacation!
Phew! Never a dull moment in the halls of Burr... And, of
course, we're already onto the "next big thing". We hope everyone
received their information/volunteer sign-up for our World Cultures
Festival. Folks, be sure to mark your calendars now for Saturday,
March 13! We are looking for volunteers to help with all sorts of
things, from sharing your family's culture, to helping prepare craft
materials, to bringing snacks to share, to just lending a hand for
about an hour at the event itself. Click here to print out your
volunteer sign up form--and please return it by tomorrow so we'll have
it for our Wednesday volunteer planning meeting at 7:00 pm in the
library.
See you around school, Steve DeJesus & Dana Hanson Burr PTO Co-Presidents

The Importance of Oral Health |
|
Did you know tooth decay is the most common chronic disease of childhood? Oral health is an important part of general health. Left untreated, tooth decay can cause pain and tooth loss. This not only affects eating, sleeping and learning for a child today, but also self-esteem and future employability as an adult. Fluoride is added to community drinking water in Newton and many other cities and towns. It is a safe, inexpensive and extremely effective method of preventing tooth decay. But drinking fluoridated water is not all families should do to protect their child's oral health.
Everyone should also:
·Brush and floss with a soft toothbrush twice a day to reduce dental plaque and prevent gingivitis
·Visit a dental provider regularly
·Eat wisely - avoid snacks with sugars and starches and limit the number of snacks eaten throughout the day. Also, eat the recommended five-a-day helping of fiber-rich fruits and vegetables
·Avoid tobacco

Auburndale Community Association Meeting to Discuss Development of Riverside T Station |
|
Dear Neighbor: As you know, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation has decided to lease the Riverside T station property to a private developer. The developers are planning a huge development for that location which will have profound impacts on, among other things, traffic in our neighborhood. Click here to see the current proposal. The Auburndale Community Association, in conjunction with the Lower Falls Improvement Association, and the Lasell Neighborhood Association will be gathering on Wednesday February 3 at 7:30pm to discuss this development. I would encourage you to attend if you are able to do so.
The purpose of the meeting is: 1) Provide an update on the development of the Riverside T station. 2) Discuss the possibility of the surrounding communities hiring an independent consultant to conduct a peer review of the traffic studies conducted by the developers. ·Potential consultants will be invited to come and pitch their services to the group. ·If people are supportive of this idea, we may try to raise some funds that evening as well. 3) To establish a committee tasked with tracking the development, keeping the neighborhood informed of developments, and recommending actions when appropriate. Again - this meeting will take place in Parish Hall of the UPA church on Woodland road (between Hancock and Grove) at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday February 3rd. Thanks very much, Nick Nesgos President, ACA
