From Ms. Bencal's Desk
Ms. Bencal Dear Families,

It's a girl! First grade teacher Natalia Espinal and husband Burt welcomed their baby daughter, Celia Granofsky, on November 11, 2009 at 5:13 PM. Celia weighed 8 pounds,
1 oz. Mother and baby went home on Friday, and everyone is doing fine.

Hats off!... to all of the Burr students who went trick-or-treating for UNICEF this year, to all of the families, friends, and neighbors who made contributions, and to fourth grade teacher Sonja Robinson and her class for organizing this year's campaign once again. We will report the final amount collected for UNICEF in the next Burr Bulletin.  And thank you, too, to parent Jeff Zabel for organizing the project to collect extra Halloween candy for Rosie's Place. We collected many pounds of candy in 3 days. It was great to have these two community service projects to which our students can contribute around Halloween time.

Are you, like so many of our friends and neighbors, feeling the current economic pinch? With unemployment affecting many of our friends and families, we have Burr families in transition with their work situations, even temporarily.  Your family may now be eligible for free or reduced lunch. Please look for a letter, an eligibility chart and an application coming home soon with your child or children. You may also get the information online at www.newton.k12.ma.us (go to Quick Links; Food Services; Elementary; Free and Reduced Application).

Please know that it is not difficult to apply for free or reduced lunch. In addition, Cheryl Jasset, our lunch manager, is very willing to sit down with any and all families to help them fill out an application. We have translations (into other languages) of the Free and Reduced lunch application form. Families' application and information is completely confidential; Mrs. Jasset is the only person in the school who knows who is on Free or Reduced Lunch (I do not know and no teachers nor parents know). If you qualify for Free or Reduced Lunch, it is not mandatory that your child orders the school lunch each day.

If you apply for and receive free or reduced lunch, the school may benefit. Title 1 federal funds are given to the schools in Newton that have the highest percentage of families on Free or Reduced Lunch. In the past, Title 1 funds have given us money for assistants to help students in reading and math in grades 2-5, money to run our after school homework center, money for books for our book room and our book baggy program (sending just right books home with young children every week) and money for MCAS tutoring. So please look for this information and please consider applying for Free or Reduced Lunch.

End of the first quarter of school: As of last Thursday, we have been in school for 45 days. This is one quarter of the school year, so this is the time that the school looks at students' attendance and tardiness records and sends letters to families if students have been absent or tardy for 5 days or more so far during this school year. We do this as a reminder of Newton's policy on attendance. The Students' Rights and Responsibilities Handbook states:  "Regular attendance in school is required by Massachusetts law. If a student is absent for 10 days in a half year period, the student's parent or guardian will be contacted by the principal or principal designee." As we all know, there has been an increase in sickness among children in school this fall. Even so, the school has been noticing an increase in student absences for non-medical reasons (e.g. trips and vacations). In addition, students who are tardy often have a difficult time starting the day in a focused, calm way. Students are severely handicapped in their learning and achievement when they have numerous absences or days when they are tardy. Thank you to the many families who maintain very good attendance records.

I hope to see many of you at the next parent-principal coffee on Tuesday, November 24, 8:35-9:15 AM in the cafeteria. I will share information about our work to deal with our space "crunch" at Burr School and our plans to pilot a new anti-bullying curriculum in some of our grade 3, 4, and 5 classes.
Upcoming Events: We are excited about the book fair that is planned for December 2 -7 and our December PTO meeting on December 2 focused on books, literacy, literature, and using the library.

Sincerely,
Cindy Bencal

The Beatrice Family Fund
As many of you know, Jeff Beatrice, a gifted coach and father of eleven, died unexpectedly last month. He leaves behind his wife, Elinor, and seven children within the Newton Public Schools ranging from a kindergartener to a senior in high school. With Jeff's passing, a huge void was left financially for the family. Not surprisingly, the Newton community has rallied to support this family. Two successful fundraisers were held this past week, but there are still other ways you can reach out.

Financial donations can be sent to:

Latino Parenting Workshop
The Newton Partnership and the Newton Community Service Center are co-sponsoring a parenting workshop for Spanish-speaking families with school-aged children entitled Raising Children in America: Challenges and Hopes on Wednesday, December 2, 2009, 7:00-8:30 P.M. at the Newton Community Service Center, (behind the W. Newton CVS) 492 Waltham St., West  Newton MA 02465.  Space is limited.  Pre-registration is required.  Register by emailing: laraujo@ncscweb.org or call 617.969.5906 x217.

This workshop, conducted in Spanish, will explore the often conflicting values, beliefs and assumptions that immigrant families struggle with raising their children in America.  Together parents and guardians will discuss the value of preserving their own cultural traditions and methods of parenting versus integrating American parenting techniques and how parents and guardians can negotiate between the two.

This workshop will be facilitated by Loraine Araujo, M.Ed.  She is a multi-lingual therapist for The Parents Program at Newton Community Service Center, where she works closely with immigrant families.
