| U.O.D. Needs Y.O.U.!
Thurs. Nov. 12 |
The Understanding Our Differences Program is still looking for a few parent volunteers to help out with the Learning Disabilities Unit this Thursday afternoon. This is a really great unit that the kids really relate to. You could help the kids try to write their name upside-down and backwards in a mirror or play a memory game or a fun storytelling game. The kids love it. Help us make this happen: this Thursday November 12th.

| Burr 6th Annual Science & Engineering Discovery Week, Jan. 11-15, 2010 |
Does your career or hobby involve science or engineering? How about the environment or sustainability? Would you be willing to share your excitement about one of these topics with a class of Burr students for 20-30 minutes? We're organizing Burr's 6th Annual Science & Engineering Discovery Week, which brings parents into the classroom to provide our children with an exciting and accessible view of science and engineering. The kids love these presentations and they're easy and rewarding for the presenter. We hope you'll participate by giving a 20 or 30-minute presentation to one or more class during the week of January 11 - 15. Don't worry about timing, we will work with you to find a time that will fit with your schedule. If you're interested or have any questions, please contact us by December 1st. Thanks! Joanne and Ken Kotz, Michelle Fineblum and Michael Gevelber

| More Pretzels For Sale! |
The first day of 5th Grade Pretzel Sales was so successful that we very unfortunately ran out and left many disappointed faces...please come back next Friday when we will have increased inventory! Just $1. Remember - to help selling go smoothly, Blue Zoners should park legally while your riders make their purchase or arrive five to ten minutes after 3pm to give kids a chance to get their pretzels and be ready and waiting for you. Ms. Bencal stays outside until 3:15 so no one will be left alone. Pretzels will be available to bus riders and BCAPers as well. We will make a special effort to sell to the BCAPers first next week, since they missed out this week. If you are a Fifth Grade parent or student who would like to help, please contact Sara DeSimone Scott at gsna@comcast.net or 617-795-2207.

| Free Parenting Group - Parent Management Training |
Join other parents of elementary-aged children and a professional facilitator to explore possible solutions to problem behavior using Parent Management Training (PMT), an evidence-based program for parents developed by Alan Kazdin, Ph.D., of Yale University's Parenting Center and Child Conduct Clinic. PMT has been consistently proven to decrease behavioral problems and increase positive behavior in children. It is highly effective in reducing tantrums, fighting, and disruptiveness. If you have tried other methods of changing your child's problem behavior and haven't had any success, then PMT may be the solution for you. These free workshops will be led by Rachel Nenner-Payton, LICSW, a senior clinician at Riverside Community Care in Newton. She specializes in community-based treatment and was trained in Alan Kazdin's Parent Management Training (PMT) in 2007. Five sessions on Tuesdays 11/17, 11/24, 12/1, 12/8 and 12/15 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. at the John M. Barry Boys & Girls Club, 675 Watertown Street, 02460. There is no fee, but pre-registration is required: call 617-969-4925. Co-sponsored by Riverside Community Care and The Newton Partnership. | |
