PTO Meeting TONIGHT! Monday, April 6
All About MATH at Burr!

Ms. BencalWe are looking forward to our yearly PTO meeting in Boston!  Our speaker will be Robin Moriarty, our Burr Math Coach.  Join us for a lively discussion and slide show about what your children are learning in math at Burr, how they are learning it, and why.  You will also find out how you can support your children at home to strengthen their mathematics skills.

The meeting will be held at the Yawkey Club of Roxbury (Boys
and Girls Club), a state-of-the-art recreational and educational facility.  We will have pizza and childcare available at the meeting--kids love the "games room" at the club!  Many thanks to Lori Wheeler for reserving the space and arranging childcare for us.  In order to ensure the appropriate quantity of pizza and childcare, kindly RSVP as soon as you can to Dana Hanson.

Burr to help meet urgent need for toiletries at Newton Food Pantry
Burr School 2nd Graders are sponsoring a drive to collect donations of toiletries for the Newton Food Pantry.  The pantry serves approximately 120 families per month and is currently in dire need of donations.  All schools in Newton have been asked to help collect donations and Burr School is responsible for collecting toiletries: shampoo, toilet paper, toothpaste, soap, dish liquid.  Please bring your donations to the boxes in the front hallway and parent volunteers will deliver them to the Newton Food Pantry.  Please contact Jeff Zabel or Dana Hanson if you have questions about the drive.  Thanks!
Burr School Quilt

The Burr School "Quilt" is in the process of being updated with squares from the Kindergarten and other families new to Burr this year.  The Quilt is a wonderful way to share family traditions and special moments with the Burr Community.  Quilt squares were distributed to all Kindergarteners and first graders as well as all other new families this week.  If your family has never done a square or you've noticed your square has gone missing or gotten tattered and you want to update, please help yourself to one from the Quilt Box on the counter at the Main Office.  Or contact Sara DeSimone Scott  or Kelly Brown

Our goal is to have every family represented in the quilt. It is, like most heirloom quilts, in need of mending and updating. Please help others learn names and faces of other Burr families. Help us display proudly the wonderful diversity of our own little community!
March Burr School Council Meeting
At the Burr School Council meeting on March 9, the following issues were discussed:

Traffic Safety on Pine Street: Discussion continued on traffic safety and Blue Zone protocols during drop-off and pick-up times. Illegal parking continues to be a problem on Pine Street, particularly at the south end. Parking is legal on both sides of the street at 6 p.m. for aftercare pickup, but not during regular school hours.

Recycling at Burr:  Liz Moran's fifth grade class is coordinating the weekly recycling of plastics. A recycling committee, composed of teachers and parents, is working with the city to ensure pickup of recyclables in front of the school. Kelly Brown is the contact parent for this committee.

Safe Schools: The upcoming lock-down practice drill on March 20 was reviewed. Ms. Bencal reported that the Safe Schools grant will provide shades for indoor windows as a lock-down safety measure.

School Improvement Plan: Ms. Bencal is in the process of updating the School Improvement Plan to share with School Council later this year.

Topics of Interest:  The Newton Public Schools budget, large class size, progress reports, and the school store were discussed briefly.

The next School Council meeting is scheduled for April 13 at 4:30 p.m. and is open to the Burr community.

A Day In Ghana, Grade 2 - Tuesday, April 14
Joe and Vida Galeota have created a charming, rich program about the culture of Ghana. The program brings the second graders to a Ghanaian village for a day where students "experience" a family's morning chores, the marketplace, a school day and evening activities. Throughout the presentation, Joe and Vida present artifacts, music, games, and proverbs. Joe Galeota is an associate professor at the Berklee College of Music and has lived in Ghana for many years. His wife, Vida, grew in up in Ghana. Look for a flyer with the exact times for this program.

Emilie Boon, Author and Illustrator
Kindergarten, Tuesday, April 28
Emilie Boon, author and illustrator of more than twenty books for young children including Peterkin Meets A Star, Belinda's Balloon, and 123 How Many Animals Can You See will be visiting Kindergartners on April 28. During this interactive program Emilie will share her artwork and writing experiences with the students. She explains where she gets her ideas and why making mistakes and re-writing is part of the process for authors at every age. Then in a hands-on project the students are given a simple accordion book to illustrate using crayon and watercolor; Emilie's signature technique.
