PTO Co-Presidents Letter
|
March has turned out to be a surprisingly fun and busy month with ice skating (many thanks to Jean Giglio for organizing the fabulous 5th annual Ice Skating Party. Who knew there were so many talented twirlers out there?!)...the Burr Community Adult Book Group (much appreciation to both Nina Dickerman and David Gaita for organizing it)...those who donated gently worn clothing and backpacks (you know who you are, you're the ones who already started your spring cleaning!)...a well-attended and lively presentation at this month's PTO meeting on Nutrition 101 by Suzanne Rostler, MS RD, clinical dietitian from Great Moves (thanks to Erika Drezner for arranging the sitter)...
In the next week we've got the Book Swap, Chateau Night, the online job survey fundraiser (which is going GREAT by the way), and the upcoming World Cultures Festival Potluck. Whew!
And please, do plan to attend the next PTO meeting on April 6. It'll feature our very own math coach, Robin Moriarty, and will be held at the Roxbury Boys and Girls Club. Pizza and childcare provided!
Watch for more info on those events, and please consider lending a hand! This is a great opportunity for first-timers to get involved in PTO-sponsored activities. After all, there are only 58 more days of school (barring unforeseen snowstorms!).
Thank you again to all the parents who devote their time and resources to making Burr School a community of support, acceptance, warmth and learning for all our children and families!

Books4Bikes is Back
|
|
Students at Burr School once again have the opportunity to participate in the Books4Bikes program. This program is sponsored by Paula Farina, a Horace Mann parent, who owns Farina Bikes in Newton. Students will earn the opportunity to be in a lottery to win a bike of their choice. It is a wonderful way for students to earn something by reading. Every participant will receive a coupon for a free water bottle, $5 off a bike helmet and a free bike helmet fitting at Farina's Bikes. Participation is optional. Beginning March 17th, students can read and record the number of minutes they read on the record sheet that has been sent home with your child, along with the coupon. K to 2 students can fill in a line for every 20 minutes they read. For students who are not reading, reading with a parent or being read to for 20 minutes will count. Grades 3-5 students need to read for 30 minutes to fill a line on the record sheet. Friday April 17th will be the last day for the program. The completed form should be sent in to your classroom teacher. This will then become your child's lottery ticket. In the May All School meeting we will draw one winner for K-2 and one for Grades 3-5. Each winner will be able to pick a bike of his/her choice at Farina's Bikes. Questions? Please contact Ms. Guttman, the Literacy Specialist for Burr at kalpana_guttman@newton.k12.ma.us. |

| Rally for Education - tomorrow! |
|
| Tuesday, March 24 10-11:30AM
Gardener Auditorium
Bus transportation from Cold Spring Park leaving at 9am (and back in time for early release -- or for you to get back to work!)
Join a bunch of fellow Burr parents on the bus to the state house for the Stand for Children rally! Within a few weeks of the rally, legislators are likely to vote on three proposals that could bring $3,625,044 in new revenues to Newton. That's how much our community could receive if the legislature: closes the telecom tax loophole, adopts the governor's proposal to increase the hotel and meal taxes by one penny and redistribute it to the communities most in need, allows communities to raise another penny on the hotel and meal tax locally.
Corporate lobbyists are opposing these proposals. Legislators are telling us that they need to see grassroots support to keep these options on the table. The rally is a short but powerful way to take action and make our voice heard.

Time to Register for Kindergarten Soccer
|
|
Boys and girls now in kindergarten or entering kindergarten in the fall of 2009 are welcome to join the program that has introduced Newton children to soccer since 1993. The focus is on fun, introducing soccer, and developing confidence. Teams are usually organized by elementary school, so it's a great opportunity to meet other families from your school and give your child a chance to make friends before starting kindergarten. Kindergarten children play at 9:15am and those in preschool play at 10:45 on Saturday mornings, April 25 through June 20 (except 5/23) at Zervas School Field and nearby Richardson Field. The $60 fee includes a team t-shirt as well as an end-of-program medal. Info and registration at www.kindergartensoccer.org. Questions? E-mail ksoccer@kindergartensoccer.org or call 617-527-9238. Registrations after March 31 are accepted only on a space-available basis. |
