** TONIGHT **

coffeePlease join Ms. Bencal and Burr School parents tonight at 6:00 p.m. at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center, prior to the Newton METCO Parents' Council Meeting.  We hope that you will be able to attend this meeting.  Don't worry if you can't make it at 6:00 pm, join us later.  The METCO Parents Council Meeting will take place at its regular time; 7:00 p.m.  LIGHT REFRESHMENTS WILL BE SERVED  Please contact Lori Wheeler if you have questions.
Stay informed on the proposed NPS budget
Here's how!

coffeeHeard about the proposed school budget for next year? Wondering what it means for elementary, middle, and high schools? There are a couple of ways to keep yourself informed. You can read the proposed budget - - each school PTO got a copy and ours is on the front desk in the lobby. You can also read the presentation that Superintendant Jeff Young gave about the proposed budget to the School Committee on March 5th.

Agree with the budget? Disagree? Here's what you can do --
  • Write an email to the address that forwards to all School Committee members.
  • Visit the School Commitee web site.
  • Make a phone call to the School Committee - they are our elected officials, after all.  See list of committee members and their phone number here.
  • Want to go to the meetings or watch it live on NewTV? Here's the complete schedule of School Committee Budget Meetings
  • Add yourself to the School Committee newsletter list so you keep up with what's going on (from the link on the left of School Committee website).

On Monday night March 16th, the school committee is scheduled to hold its "straw vote" on the FY10 budget. School Committee members need to hear from parents BEFORE that meeting about our concerns. The School Committee meeting that will follow, on Thursday March 19th is the Public Hearing on the Budget, where your attendance will also be very valuable, and all are invited to give public comment.

Don't delay -- now is the time to speak up!

March PTO Meeting recap - Nutrition 101
cheese and applesAt the March PTO meeting, Suzanne Rostler, MS, RD, Clinical Director of Great Moves! gave parents a primer on optimal nutrition choices for our children.  She stressed healthy eating habits are key to maintaining healthy weight and ensuring proper growth and development of our children's growing bodies and brains.

Suzanne began by introducing the basics of a healthy diet - protein for growth and development, fat to aid in absorption of vitamins and minerals and provide energy and carbohydrates to supply energy to both the body and brain.  Lack of all of these components as part of each meal or snack will put kids on a blood sugar roller coaster leading to experiencing low energy, impaired memory and fat storage.

A few basic principles Suzanne suggested, especially with the upcoming MCAS when we want to optimize our children's chances to be at their peak performance:
  • Stick to "real" carbohydrates (high fiber, low sugar) instead of "fake" (low or no fiber and high sugar) -fresh fruit vs. a fruit roll up, for example.
  • Pair "real" carbohydrates with a source of lean protein and a little bit of healthy fat to create a balanced meal or snack - whole grain tortilla chips and guacamole, whole wheat toast and eggs, whole wheat crackers and nut butter, string cheese and fruits and vegetables.
  • Limit processed foods and sweets to after a balanced meal and keep portion sizes under control.
  • An increase in the consumption of fruits, vegetables, fiber and calcium along with limiting or restricting soda, fried foods and trans fats can decrease risks for becoming overweight, suffering from depression and behavior problems.
  • If you can't pronounce an ingredient's name or don't know what it is, don't buy it.
  • She stressed the importance of a well balanced breakfast so we avoid the mid morning "crash" that can affect attention span, brain function and retention.
  • We had a discussion about healthy snacks especially for MCAS. She suggested fresh fruit, cheese and perhaps whole wheat crackers.
  • Read the ingredients list on packaged foods.  Ingredients are listed in descending order of quantity so the first items listed represent the highest quantity.  Be wary of sugars: sucrose, high fructose corn syrup, dextrose, maple syrup, honey, molasses, fruit juice concentrate.

The slideshow that Suzanne used during her presentation can be found here.  Full minutes of the PTO meeting are here

** Special thanks to Sara DeSimone Scott for summarizing Suzanne's presentation for the benefit of the Burr community, and as always to Kelly Brown for the detailed PTO Meeting minutes! **
April PTO Meeting -- In Boston
Date to Be Determined Very Soon
We are very excited about our annual PTO meeting to be held at the Roxbury Boys and Girls Club.  This year's speaker will be our Burr Math Coach, Robin Moriarty.  All Burr families (from Newton and Boston) are encouraged to attend--we'll have a family pizza dinner at 6:00 followed by on-site childcare during the meeting.  We are in the process of solidifying the date of this meeting and will get the word out about the final date as soon as we can.
The May Fair will be May 9!
bounce houseFor those of you new to Burr, at our May Fair we play games and do crafts, eat great food, and generally have a blast. We could use some more energetic and fun people to help out with year's events.  Want to put up flyers and help with publicity? Bring CDs and play music or be the DJ? Set up the prizes and help with the games? Some of the tasks do not require meeting time and can be explained easily through e-mail. So grab a friend and hop on board to create a fun community event.  Please contact Diana Fisher Gomberg to help out.  Thanks!

Shaw's Rewards Program follow up
shaw'sIn the week since our flyer went out, Shaw's has begun issuing new Rewards Cards to some customers. Don't all scream at once...

Take a look at your Shaw's card - if it says "Shaw's Rewards", you're all set (just register at  www.shaws.com/communityrewards if you haven't done so already.)

If your card says "Shaw's Supermarkets", you will be given a new card the next time you shop.  If you had already registered for the Shaw's Community Rewards program with your old card, you will need to re-register with your new one. Re-registration is the same easy process: you can register on-line at www.shaws.com/communityrewards or by calling Customer Service at 1-877-932-7948. It is important to tell Customer Service that you are updating your Reward's Card for Shaw's in the Boston area. (Different areas of the country have different programs and registration requirements.)  If another member of your family has registered their own Rewards card (with a different Rewards number) under the same phone number as your card was registered, it may take just a bit longer.

Creative Arts & Sciences

Upcoming Program
Valerie Tutson, Storyteller: All School Concert Part II  Due to a family emergency, this program, which was originally scheduled for Tuesday, March 10th, was postponed.  Watch your child's folder for a new date for this mesmerizing African American storyteller's performance.
Recent Programs
Museum of Science Traveling Program:  Weather: Wind, Water and Temperature
On Monday, March 9th the 5th graders observed how atmospheric phenomena interact with each other to create weather.  The Museum of Science Traveling Program demonstrated a model cloud formation, precipitation, and the collision of warm and cold fronts in order to show how slight changes can have dramatic effects. Students were in awe as they watched a hot air balloon lift off inside the school.  A couple of brave volunteers pressurized a tank to create enough wind to power a cannon, and everyone witnessed clouds form inside a chamber. This program was a fun informative way to begin the 5th grade segment on weather.

Irene Smalls, Author
On Friday, March 13th author Irene Smalls delighted the first grade students with a magical and interactive performance.  By acting out some of her most beloved stories, Ms. Smalls inspired the children with not only her wonderful characters and plots, but also with the story of how she first became an author in kindergarten.  She shared with the students how she finds joy in writing about her life, her children and the "world she sees at the tip of her nose" and how the students can use these techniques to create their own stories in and out of the classroom.  For example, Ms. Smalls captivated the audience with the story of Jonathan and His Mommy and explained how this, her second book, was inspired by the walks she used to take with her son Jonathan when he was a toddler. Getting the children up, Ms. Smalls had them clapping their hands and stamping their feet to keep pace with the rhythm of her first book Irene and the Big Fine Nickel.  Her exercise was a lesson for the children about using onomatopoeia to add dimension to their writing.  Addressing them as fellow authors, Ms. Smalls gave first graders tips on writing, such as the importance of taking "what is in your head and your heart and putting it into sensory images."  Students, teachers and parents were all delighted at this very popular performance.

Creative Arts and Sciences programs are fully-funded by the Burr PTO and are made possible by your generous donations. Unless otherwise noted, parents are welcome to attend.
