Ice Skating, Saturday, December 6th
The return of Boston/Newton FriendTrips
Skating at Frog PondFriendTrips is a project of the PTO's METCO Families and Friends Committee, as part of our work to build a strong and welcoming community for all Burr families.  As you may know, Burr School has 15 students who participate in the METCO Program.  METCO provides Boston children the opportunity to go to school in Newton (and other suburban communities), and provides Newton children the opportunity to learn in a more racially diverse educational environment.  Our committee, with support from Burr teacher David Gaita, plans several social events during the course of the year.  FriendTrips is a way for YOUR family to get to know other Burr families from both Boston and Newton.  Together, our families explore Boston's riches, get to know each other on a first-name basis, and have fun!

Our first FriendTrip is Saturday, December 6--Ice Skating on Boston Common at Frog Pond (1:30-3:30 pm).  For more information about our ice skating trip, or to join our email list of upcoming events, please contact Dana Hanson at danakhanson@gmail.com.
Science & Engineering Discovery Week
Burr 5th Annual
Science & Engineering Discovery Week
· January 12 - 16, 2009 ·

Does your career or hobby involve science or engineering? Would you be willing to share yourself with a class of Burr students for 20 minutes?

We're organizing Burr's 5th Annual Science & Engineering Discovery Week, which brings parents into the classroom to provide our children with an exciting and accessible view of science and engineering.  The kids love these presentations, and they're easy and rewarding for the presenter.

We hope you'll participate by giving a 20-minute presentation to one or more classes during the week of January 12 - 16.  We're eager to work with your schedule!

We need to organize this as soon as possible for a smooth operation in January. If you're interested, or have any questions, please contact us by December 5. Thanks!  Joanne Kotz (joannekotz@gmail.com) or Michelle Fineblum (fineblum@alum.mit.edu) Phone: 617-964-7515 (Michelle or Michael)

Newton Parent Advisory Council (PAC)
Discussion with Jeff Young, Supt. of Schools

Newton Parent's Advisory Council for Special Education invites you to a   discussion with Dr. Jeffrey M. Young, Superintendent of Newton Public Schools.

Thursday, December 11, 2008, 7:30 to 9:00 pm
Education Center , 100 Walnut Street , Room 210
Light refreshments and networking begin at 7:15pm

Jeff Young will be our guest, answering questions from parents of children receiving special education services in Newton.  Bring your burning questions about special education and ... the strategic planning effort, the budget, the system-wide goals and mission statement, and other topics of particular concern to the special education community and you!

If possible, we would like to share your questions with Dr. Young in advance to allow him to focus his comments on areas of interest.  Send your questions to Sandy Baird, PAC co-chair by December 5th, at sjsbaird@rcn.com.  For more information about the PAC, contact Burr SPED PAC liaison Erika Drezner at egdrenze@yahoo.com or go to our website at www.newtonpac.org.

Looking to share carpool to Lincoln
We're looking for a ride to Lincoln on Friday afternoons for a cool program for our 3rd grader who goes to a program at Friends For Tomorrow, a <more information here!?>. We can easily drive the kids home afterwards, it's getting the kids *to* Lincoln that's the problem. Contact Rachel Scheff by email if you're interested.
