Repect for Human Differences Committee
First Meeting of the Year -- All are Welcome!
The Respect for Human Differences Committee will hold it's first meeting of the year Monday, November 17 from 4:00 to 5:30 pm in the library.  (Note: The RHD Committee will alternate meeting times between afternoons and evenings to accommodate as many schedules as possible.)

The Burr Respect for Human Differences (RHD) Committee is a group of parents and teachers who work on our school community's growth toward respect for human differences, one of the core values of our Newton Public Schools.  Last year, we met four times to develop an inventory of current RHD activities at the school, worked with chairs and facilitators of existing RHD programs (World Cultures, Affintiy Group, Burr METCO Buddies/Friendtrips) and coordinated the procurement of new classroom RHD materials across all grades.  Additional initiatives this year include promoting anti-bullying education at Burr and a possible parent-teacher book group on various topics pertaining to RHD issues.

We look forward to our work this year and hope that new folks will join our committee!  For more information, please contact one of this year's RHD Committee Co-Chairs:

SchoolPop is now OneCause
Contribute to Burr at no cost to you
The holidays are right around the corner.  If you plan to shop online, please use OneCause to initiate your purchases.  This great program turns your everyday and holiday purchases into much-needed funds for Burr.   Purchases initiated through the OneCause website automatically contribute between 1% - 20% of the purchase price to Burr, with no extra cost to you!

How does it work?
OneCause (formerly called Schoolpop) is a shopping program that educational organizations can use for fundraising.  Shoppers register with OneCause by creating a profile and choosing Burr Elementary School (school ID 98543) as the school they want to support.
OneCause website
Once registered, go to the OneCause website and select the store in which you would like to shop.  LL Bean, Amazon.com, Toys R Us, Shutterfly, Lands End, Ann Taylor, Boden, Target, Pottery Barn and The Children's Place are just a few of the many, many merchants that participate in the program (i.e. chances are, your favorite stores are included!)  Shop at the selected site, make your purchase, and a certain percentage of your purchase will go to Burr.  It's as simple as that!
PTO Meeting, Thurs Nov 20
Readers' Workshop: Instruction for all Learners
Book SwapAt the next PTO meeting, our Literacy Specialist Ms. Guttman will talk about what Readers' Workshop looks like in Grades 2-5, and how it is structured to meet the needs of a diverse group of learners through whole class instruction, independent reading and guided reading.

We are also planning a special morning for K-1 parents to hear teachers talk about literacy instruction in the early grades. Of course K-1 parents are most welcome to attend the PTO meeting mentioned above--your kids will be in the upper grades before you know it!  The book fair will be open at this time.

**Childcare will be available during the PTO meeting for those who need it**
A small donation is appreciated to help defray the cost of our professional childcare staff for the evening.
Navigating the Rocky Road of Adolescence
Free presentation at Newton Wellesley Hospital
Research indicates that adolescents do best when they maintain strong connections to their families. Yet how do parents stay connected with teens who are often moody and sometimes defiant? Review the basics of adolescent development and explore the meanings behind adolescent mood swings and attitude shifts. Discuss the challenges of parenting a teen with special needs. Learn to identify warning signs of "trouble on the road" along with strategies for maintaining those important connections that all teens need in their journey toward adulthood.

Presented by Michael Jellinek, MD
Chief of Child Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital
and President of Newton-Wellesley Hospital
