Greetings!

...welcome to another OraMedia Newsletter.

What are you going to do when you can't find a dentist when you need one?? Wait it out, eat zucchini and listen to Zappa, right?

Well, not quite, but I managed to fit all of that in this newsletter somehow.

Hope you like it. It beats cutting the grass in this heat.

No Dentist?? No Dentist?? Oh, no!

Gary F. Arnett DDS

Dental emergencies can occur at home or in the wilderness without warning and can incapacitate a person in an instant. "No problem, I'll get right over to the dentist," you think. Hopefully, that is possible, but not always. You may live some distance from a dentist, it may be a night or weekend when it is hard to find one, or there may not be any available.

One of the first things that stop during a disaster is dental care. Major natural disasters, such as earthquakes, fires, or floods, and human disasters, such as terrorism or riots, close dental offices in a second. Electrical shortages, as seen in California recently, or any disruption of the regional power grids and there is no help since dentists can't operate without electricity. Hospitals rarely have any dental services, so you could be on your own for hours or days.

Frank ZappaI Might Be Movin' to Montana Soon...

...gonna be a mental toss flycoon.

Well, that's only partly true.  I have had to remove the Glide Floss from the catalog due to unavailablity (to me, anyway) so, don't you know that the Dr. Collins folks have a nice floss and Mary sent us some.  We all like it, so it is going into the catalog soon - probably around the 11th and I'll make an announcement, of course.  I expect to sell millions...

In the meantime, enjoy this old video of Zappa doing 'Montana' in case you ever wondered where dental floss actually came from.   It will bring back memories - or not, but I thought it was fitting, novel and one of the safer Zappa tunes for this audience.

Raisin' my lonely dental floss,
Tom

Dr. Collins Perio Toothbrush

Hi Tom,

I just received my Dr Collins Perio Toothbrush yesterday and I LOVE IT !!!!!!!  It is the BEST toothbrush I have ever used  !!!!!!!  It is soft and very soothing to the gums like a great massage. It felt soooo good that I rebrushed my teeth this morning. I will definitely be ordering more brushes.

Thanks,
Brenda A. Simmons

Dr. Collins Toothbrush

Now, I was a couple of days late getting Brenda her order and she called to let me know just how disappointed she was, so when she called again, I thought I was really going to catch it. Instead, she left that message (above) on my voicemail.  It's nice when someone actually takes time out of their day to call and tell you how much they like yer product, eh??  I really do like this toothbrush!  (...and I like Brenda a whole lot better now, too!)

Dr. Collins Perio Toothbrush penetrates the areas between teeth and gums removing plaque and food particles, while gently massaging gums without pain and bleeding. It gives you cleaner teeth, healthier gums and saves tooth enamel from abrasion. Dr. Collins Perio Toothbrush helps prevent cavities and provides overall oral hygiene and fresher breath.

Lots of Zucchini

What are you going to do with all of that Zucchini this summer?

Last issue we talked about dealing with inflammation.  Well, if you have an abundance of zucchini, start eating it - for inflammation and a whole lot of other reasons (it all helps you teeth).  Someone sent me this article and I don't know the source, but it was probably Dr. Weil.

Zucchini is an excellent source of manganese and vitamin C. It is also a very good source of magnesium, vitamin A, dietary fiber, potassium, copper, folate, and phosphorus. In addition, summer squash is a good source of omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, vitamin B6, calcium, zinc, niacin, and protein.

Health Benefits

Promotes Optimal Health
Although not as potent as root vegetables like burdock, garlic or onion, squashes have been found to have anti-cancer type effects. Although phytonutrient research on squash is limited, some lab studies have shown vegetable juices obtained from squash to be parallel to juices made from leeks, pumpkin, and radish in their ability to prevent cell mutations (cancer-like changes).

Supports Men's Health
In research studies, extracts from squash have also been found to help reduce symptoms of a condition occurring in men called benign prostatic hypertrophy, or BPH. In this condition, the prostate gland becomes problematically enlarged, which can cause difficulty with urinary and sexual function. Particularly in combination with other phytonutrient-containing foods, squash may be helpful in reducing BPH symptoms.

Well-Rounded Cardiovascular Protection
The traditional nutrients provided by summer squash are equally impressive. Our food ranking system qualified summer squash as an excellent source of manganese and vitamin C and a very good source of magnesium, vitamin A (notably through its concentration of carotenoids, including beta-carotene), fiber, potassium, folate, copper, riboflavin, and phosphorus.

Many of these nutrients have been shown in studies to be helpful for the prevention of atherosclerosis and diabetic heart disease. Summer squash's magnesium has been shown to be helpful for reducing the risk of heart attack and stroke. Together with the potassium in summer squash, magnesium is also helpful for reducing high blood pressure. The vitamin C and beta-carotene found in summer squash can help to prevent the oxidation of cholesterol. Since oxidized cholesterol is the type that builds up in blood vessel walls, these nutrients may help to reduce the progression of atherosclerosis. The vitamin folate found in summer squash are needed by the body to break down a dangerous metabolic byproduct called homocysteine, which can contribute to heart attack and stroke risk if levels get too high. Finally, summer squash's fiber has been shown to lower high cholesterol levels, which can help to reduce the risk of atherosclerosis and diabetic heart disease.

A Disease-Fighting Food
The nutrients in summer squash are useful for the prevention of other conditions as well. High intakes of fiber-rich foods help to keep cancer-causing toxins away from cells in the colon, while the folate, vitamin C, and beta-carotene help to protect these cells from the chemicals that can lead to colon cancer. The antioxidants vitamin C and beta-carotene also have anti-inflammatory properties that make them helpful for conditions like asthma, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis, where inflammation plays a big role. The copper found in summer squash is also helpful for reducing the painful symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis.
