Greetings! Today I wanted to focus on a couple of areas we don't give enough thought to; oral cancer and the rising cost of healthcare. In doing so, I'll re-introduce Sheila Wolf, who posed the question, "Is your dentist taking short cuts?" a few issues back, and Devvy Kidd, who will force open your eye lids to the hard truth about running the giant American healthcare machine. Oral Cancer Self Examination ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"More than 30,000 Americans are diagnosed with oral
cancer each year. That means that somewhere on the
lips, the gums, the linings of the cheeks, the
tongue, the floor of the mouth (underneath the
tongue), the palates, and that little pad behind the
wisdom teeth, there could be something lurking that
threatens your well-being. Oral cancer can be
deadly. However, if diagnosed early enough, oral
cancers can be treated with great success."
While 30,000 doesn't seem like an awful lot when compared to the entire U.S. population - that's the number of DIAGNOSED oral cancers. While so many of us are not regular patrons of the dental office and not all exams include an oral cancer screening anyway, it behooves us to learn what to look for and do a regular self-examination. According to a recent manufacturer's statement, a
university study released late in 2006 reveals that

beyond the fathomable. In fact, according to
'Dental Economics' magazine, dental care costs alone
are growing at the rate of 8.9% annually in the
U.S.Read this startling article and keep this surgeon general's quote from the previous article in mind: "Oral health is integral to general health... Oral health and general health should not be interpreted as separate entities." The question is, if you don't take care of you by taking preventive measures, it's going to get awfully expensive for you in the coming months and years when someone else has to take care of your own health. "I have no problem with unions and their contracts with the hiring entity. What I do have a problem with is any level government promising money down the road they know they don't and won't have and then pushing that debt off on the rest of America - especially onto mathematically doomed programs like Medicare..." |
