Greetings!

Back in 1997, when I began feeding pages from the OraMedia site to the servers & getting Dr. Nara's message on 'the true cause of gum disease' onto/into the internet, my main concern was helping people keep their teeth. After almost 10 years since actually beginning the project in 1996 I have come to realize that this message may be saving some lives from heart disease or diabetes or pulminary diseases. Yes, Bob Nara wrote, 'Are My Bad Teeth Killing Me?' way back when, but my concern was still keeping teeth and gums healthy, because, well... just because it was the right thing to do.

Since then, of course, hardly a week goes by when you don't see some report or news article on the link between gum disease and other systemic diseases and I have come to realize, even though I have reported on it many times before in this newsletter, how much more significant Nara's pronouncement about curing gum disease actually is.

In this issue, I'll share news of this link and startling new news that gum disease is hitting people at a younger age than the profession previously thought. Since most of my readers are over 35, I thought you may want to share this with your children and their children.

On with it...

Tom

OpenOffice vs. Microsoft Office
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
While this doesn't have a thing to do with oral health, I thought I'd let you in an alternative to Microsoft Office, and a free one at that.
It's tough to invest in necessary Microsoft programs when you are free-lancing, just starting out in business or a student trying to survive. If you need a spreadsheet program or a good word processor or HTML editor, consider OpenOffice for some strong alternatives. Read the review at ZDNet first, then go to OpenOffice.org for the downloads.
The Link Between Gum Disease & Life Expectancy
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Many people may not understand how oral health may affect life expectancy. So the first step would be to recognise the mouth as a major gateway into the human body. It is the upper part of the digestive system and has a structure that prepares food for the first phase of digestion.

The mouth contains the tongue, teeth, hard and soft palate, and gum, salivary glands and the mucosa. And a dentist is specially trained to give professional care to all the parts of the mouth.

The body has various inter-connected systems of organs. This means that if there is a problem with one part of the body, it may affect other parts. A disease of any part of the mouth may be associated with some other organs in other parts of the body.

Is it REAL Manuka Honey?

When I first learned of Manuka Honey, I was quite elated to stumble onto this exotic and healthy product of the hive. I thought, however, that manuka was manuka was manuka...

What I later learned was there are many companies out there selling 'manuka' honey, which are, in fact, selling 'knock-off' honeys, or labeling them 'Manuka,' but with no real UMF value.

On that subject, here is an interesting message from an email I received from the apiary in New Zealand where our manuka honey is shipped from.

Periodontal disease develops much earlier than dentists had thought
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Periodontal disease - a progressive, eventually painful and disruptive condition in which bacteria attack gums and the hidden roots of teeth - develops much earlier than dentists and other health professionals thought, a major new study concludes.
Clinicians found a significant proportion of young adult patients examined had well-established periodontal disease despite no signs or symptoms. Affected pregnant women faced more than twice the risk of preterm birth and other pregnancy complications as unaffected women, the research also revealed.
New Clue to Tooth Decay Could Lead to Dental Advances
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A study comparing antimicrobial peptides, or AMPs, a group of small proteins that occur naturally in human saliva and act like antibiotics against oral bacteria, could lead to new ways to screen children for risk of tooth decay and protect them against this common, chronic problem.
