Greetings!

Welcome to SPRING! I'm finally able to tell you that I am writing from the great state of South Carolina - the last newsletter having been composed in New York a few weeks prior to the big move.

I cannot say that it has been a smooth transition, in that, I've had my share of run-ins with the local and federal agencies down here (I haven't tested the state yet...), but nothing major. The biggest issue has been with the Postal Service not allowing me to ship TheraSol Rinse via Priority Mail. I was forced to return back to the office with a good load of out-going parcels which had to be re-packed and re-addressed for shipping by alternative means... It held orders up across the board and if yours was one, I apologize.

It hasn't been totally smooth, but the benefits of being here far outweigh any difficulties I've had in the re-location and I wouldn't discourage anyone who is thinking about a move to the Palmetto State from doing so.

Dr. and Mrs. Nara flew in on the 14th of last month. I'm including a brief, initial write-up of that experience and our week-long 'summit' below. My head is still reeling from the intensity of the trip - from all of the discussions we had and topics we covered - and there will be plenty of good information to share with you in the weeks to come...

As you may already know, Tom Spaulding has developed a good, working cannula tip adapter set for the ShowerPik and QuickPik irrigators. This means that pretty much all of the irrigators we now handle have the cannula option available. We have been doing business for years over the phone and internet and I met with Tom in person, finally, at the end of Februrary during a short trip to Florida. Tom is originally from my hometown of Elmira, NY and now seems to be living right just north of Daytona Beach.

Anyway, the last two months have been very busy and I plan to settle in down here and get some good stuff on oral health out to you.

No static at all...

Anti-Cancer Compound in Green Tea Identified
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Spanish and British scientists have discovered how green tea helps to prevent certain types of cancer.
Researchers at the University of Murcia in Spain (UMU) and the John Innes Center (JIC) in Norwich, England have shown that a compound called EGCG in green tea prevents cancer cells from growing by binding to a specific enzyme.
Exercises for TMJ pain & bruxism
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Several years ago, in an effort to give up smoking, I was using a nicotine gum as a cigarette substitute. I wanted to use it correctly and had a lot riding on my successful cessation program. Unfortunately, within a week I developed a very severe pain in the left side of my face, between my ear and jaw. It was so painful, if fact, that I could not lay on that side of my head while sleeping. I attributed it to the overuse and incorrect use of the gum and would give it up for a period. After a few days, the pain subsided, so I went back to it and, the pain quickly returned. I figured that this must be what TMJ pain felt like! TMJ is short for temporomandibular joint, or the 'jaw joint.'

I related this story to Dr. Nara and he told me that TMJ pain is most likely what I had going on at that time, that it often stemmed from bruxism or grinding the teeth, but the intense gum chewing could certainly have caused it.

He then pointed me to a reference in 'How to Become Dentally Self Sufficient' which discusses dealing with the bruxing issue and will likely help you deal with TMJ pain....

Dr. Robert & Ruth Nara in Myrtle Beach, 02/05
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You are already well-acquainted with Dr. Robert O. Nara if you've spent any time at the Oramedia site (particularly the 1979 Mother Earth News interview at http://mizar5.com/menews.htm ) or have read 'Money by the Mouthful' and 'How to Become Dentally Self Sufficient.'
I met Bob through those books in 1980. 26 years later we met face-to-face in Myrtle Beach, SC and... the guy is huge. I mean, he certainly is a big guy, physically - at 69, though retired from dentistry, he still manages over a thousand acres of forest in Michigan's Upper Penninsula. He and Ruth Nara are out there daily.
Bob's got a large presence, though. No doubt, he is the opitome of self-sufficiency. While others dream, Bob & Ruth get a notion, make a decision to take on a project and it's a 'done deal.' They'll have a dozen projects in the works at any given time and pretty much handle all they tackle all by themselves.
Vision for Life Testimonials
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Other readers of the OraMedia Newsletter were introduced to the Vision for Life program a few months ago. If you haven't looked into it yet, you owe it to yourself to do so now...

"...my optician says I am doing very well (I am currently using my previous prescription glasses for driving). He has prescribed even lower strength glasses for my driving and told me to come back when I'm seeing blindingly clear through them. I went for an eye-test before I started and am surprised at the amount of help an encouragement I'm getting from my local optician. Aren't people great!?" -Cal, Great Britan

"When I started the program I stopped wearing them (glasses) around the house first. Even this was a little scary. I wouldn't go down the steps without holding onto the hand rail because my depth perception was so bad. The next step for me was to go for a walk. I walked down to the levee and looked across the Delaware River at the New Jersey state capital and the office buildings. It was great, and I slowly began to do more and more without my glasses. The point is, it's more important to rely less and less on your glasses (safely)... Also, I would try to improve both eyes as much as possible, and use the good eye to help the bad one." -John
