Saliva Tests go High Tech
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Years ago, Dr. Nara provided a simple saliva test for detecting the presence and levels of Lacto bacillus and Strep mutans, known as high risk factors in tooth decay. Though the whole process was very simple and inexpensive, we searched unsuccessfully to find a provider of an economical saliva test since Dr. Nara retired. Plenty of saliva tests existed, but were geared toward detecting AIDS. I guess that, for the labs, the money was not in tooth decay. Now it looks as though your dentist will have a new chairside test to help indicate bone loss and and more specific cleaning visits...
With the aid of a $431,000, two-year grant from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, UB researchers hope to identify components in saliva that will tell a dentist, using a quick chair-side test, whether a patient is at risk for future loss of bone that holds the teeth in place. A positive test would signal the need for extensive cleaning and treatment.
Probably these tests, when they become available, will cost a pretty penny in the dental office. You can take our BANA test and start preventing decay and bone loss right now, without waiting for this multi-million dollar research to complete. The news article, from the University of Buffalo, is: http://www.buffalo.edu/reporter/vol36/vol36n1/articles/Scannapieco.html . Our BANA test information is here...
Feelings!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have been asked to work on the re-release Dr. Nara's book, 'Feelings! An Encounter With Yourself,' written by Dr. and Ruth Nara. Though this subject may be a bit removed fom oral health, I thought I'd introduce it to OraMedia Newsletter readers first before putting it to the rest of the planet. 'Feelings!' was first published in January, 1977 and having got to know Bob and Ruth Nara and their intelligent, but caring approach to whatever they take on, I agreed to take a look at this manuscript and study it for myself.

What I found was the usual Nara common-sense view on life and human interaction. Their observations are right on target, their solutions infallable and their understanding of the human emotional make-up and drive make 'Feelings!' a such a valuable book you'll want to pass it on to your friends and children. I've just completed the manuscript and have made it available as a Labor Day Weekend special to OraMedia readers.

Is Your Dentist Taking Shortcuts?

When ya gotta go, ya gotta go... Just make sure your getting the best treatment for your you & your family from your dental visit. Remember, they're working for you. This article from Sheila Wolf, RDH tells you how you can go beyond the basics and get the most out of your dental visit. What you should expect...

Most people think of a routine dental appointment as a check-up for cavities and an opportunity to get their teeth polished for a brighter smile. Indeed, those two items are standard. However, you can give your dental professional an A+ for competence if your dental visit goes beyond the basics.

There is growing evidence that chronic bacterial infections of the mouth are linked to a number of life-threatening illnesses. According to the American Academy of Periodontology, "Researchers have found that people with periodontal disease are almost twice as likely to suffer from coronary artery disease as those without periodontal disease." Periodontal disease is an infection, and all infections are dangerous.

Bad Breath & Gingivitis
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Does this sound familiar to you? My dentist and hygienist mentioned that I had irritated gums as they cleaned my teeth. This is a symptom of gingivitis. Gingivitis can be a stepping stone to major problems in the mouth and gum line. It can lead to periodontal disease, which is a much more serious problem with the potential for actual bone loss.
Halitosis (bad breath) could be related to a gingivitis infection as both are caused by bacteria. Red, swollen and/or bleeding gums characterize gingivitis. These symptoms are most evident upon flossing and sometimes from brushing.
