Wisconsin Association of
Nutrition Directors' Conference
Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the Elderly Nutrition Program by Channeling the '70s

The Wisconsin Association of Nutrition Directors (WAND) spring conference was held May 17-18 in Stevens Point with 75 people in attendance.

Keynoter Ted Schick had the group on the edge of their seats with his high energy, enthusiasm, great sense of humor and down to earth style. He presented "Feeding the Whole Person" and "Takin' Care of Business" and stressed that we are feeding the mental, physical, emotional, and social needs of individuals and that we do purposeful work!

The 40th Anniversary Commemorative Booklets were distributed along with a portfolio with the WAND logo on it.  Download your copy of the  Commemorative Booklet.

Thursday evening's '70s party was really groovy.  Dave Rynders, the evening's emcee, and Cecile McMannus started the evening with a dance number from Saturday Night Fever followed by a great meal and a fun trivia game -- prizes were all from the '70s!  Excellent job, Karen Neuman and Gloria Lichtfuss!  If you want a copy of the slide show or the trivia questions used, please contact Pam VanKampen.  Find more news and information on the Spring WAND conference or see more pictures from the event.

Dates for the 2013 WAND conferences are May 16-17 and October 17-18. Both will be held at the Holiday Inn Conference Center in Stevens Point.

Elderly Nutrition Task Force working on Revitalizing ENP

The first ENP Task Force meeting was held July 17, 2012. Buck Rhyme facilitated the meeting and James Schmidlkofer (Bureau of Aging & Disability Resources) lead the group. Pam VanKampen is the GWAAR representative and will be sharing the information gathered at the Spring Nutrition Director Meetings and from the Prevention Summit. Stay tuned for more news.

HIPPA Regulations and HDM Assessments

Just a reminder that if you ask for personal health information on your Home Delivered Meal Assessments, that information must be protected under HIPPA.  Assessment forms should be kept in a locked cabinet and the information should not be shared. If, for example, you have a person with diabetes and you want others to be aware, you should get a signed release from the individual stating it is okay to share with certain individuals (you may want to list them) to provide better service.

Best Practices in the ENP: Quest/FoodShare

At the ADRC of Central Wisconsin
The ADRC of Central Wisconsin offers Senior Dining participants the option of using FoodShare dollars to give a contribution for either Senior Dining or Home Delivered Meals. The Dining site staff highlights this opportunity in a welcome letter for all new Senior Dining HDM participants. Additionally, they offer occasional verbal reminders about this option.

Dining Site Managers use a process of collecting the data needed for the carbonless copy FoodShare voucher forms asking the Senior Dining participant how much money they want to have withdrawn and then make the phone call to the FoodShare program as a vendor.

For HDM participants, a one-time authorization form is completed and signed by the participant. ADRC-CW staff then call the FoodShare program or use the online tool on a monthly basis to make the transaction.

In Eau Claire County

The ADRC of Eau Claire County advertises in its newsletter, places posters at meal sites, and sends a monthly letter to apartment residents, etc., stating that they do accept the Quest card to cover Nutrition Program donations. In the fall of 2011, a representative from Second Harvest attended each of their meal sites promoting the Quest card and encouraging those that may be eligible to apply.

Congregate Meals: Nutrition staff go to meal sites once a month and give participants the opportunity to get meal tickets for the suggested donation. Participants are able to use their Quest card to purchase meal tickets for the suggested donation if eligible. In 2011, the ADRC had five people who used their Quest card to pay for their congregate meals.

Home-Delivered Meals: Usually family members or POA will come into the nutrition office to "pay" for meals already received. Nutrition staff have also gone to participants home to complete the Quest card transaction. In 2011, the ADRC had six people use their Quest card to pay for their home-delivered meals.

Liquid Supplement: Individuals come into the ADRC to purchase liquid supplements and are able to use their Quest card to do so. In 2011, the ADRC had five people purchase liquid supplements with their Quest card.

In Barron County

Barron County's FoodShare donations range from $800-$1,200 per month. Almost all of the donations are processed using the POS terminal located in our office. Staff swipes cards with the terminal, but mostly processes by using the number pad and entering card numbers and PINs.

How does this work? Participants who want to donate using FoodShare are given several options.

  1. They can complete the CSI Offline Food Stamp Voucher form each month that they wish to use their FoodShare for donation (this form requires that they provide their card number, but it does not require the cardholders PIN).
  2. They can complete our form that gives them an option to donate on a per-meal or a per-month basis. They provide their card number and PIN. Upon processing, the ADRC sends the participant their receipt which indicates the amount deducted and their benefit balance.

All FoodShare card numbers and PINs are locked up and eductions are made the month after meals are received. On occasion, a senior dining participant will "buy" tickets to use at the meal site. They simply tell the ADRC how many tickets they want for the donation they are making.

You might say that staff of the ENP provide outreach for FoodShare by letting people know they can use it for their donation. Staff involved in helping people apply for FoodShare (EBS & Economic Support) provide outreach for the ENP by letting older adults know they can use the benefit for meals on wheels or at the senior dining site!

You Can't Afford NOT to Join MOWAA

Many of you already have joined the Meals on Wheels Association of America (MOWAA) and are enjoying all the benefits that come with being a member.  Here are two examples of some big grants that were recently awarded in Wisconsin!

Sawyer County Senior Resource Center has been awarded a Walmart 'Small Program, Large Impact" grant from MOWAA.  The purpose of this grant is to provide small programs with the ability to make innovative changes to their program. They received $12,198 to put walk-in freezers in Winter and Stone Lake (both sites offer on-site cooking).

Meals On Wheels of Sheboygan County, Inc. has been awarded a Walmart 'Small Program, Large Impact" grant from MOWAA.  The purpose of this grant is to provide small programs with the ability to make innovative changes to their program.

The Sheboygan Meals On Wheels program is undergoing a major transformation that will incorporate locally-grown and donated produce into their meals, impacting both nutrition and quality. The award of $14,902 will be used to purchase and install an Alto-Shaam Blast Chiller in their new Fresh Produce Processing Center. The blast chiller will allow Meals On Wheels to freeze all the excess donated produce for use at a later date.

MOWAA membership costs only $150 per year.  Learn more.
