Mapping Federal Dollars for Alabama

Now, anyone can see where federal dollars go for contracts and grants.  USASpending.gov is a searchable database that provides that information by state, recipient, agency, contract type, etc.  Online reporting is one of the requirements of the Federal Funding Accountability and Transparency Act (Transparency Act) for federal expenditures for contracts and grants.  Data charts, graphs, and maps can be found at http://www.usaspending.gov.   In FY 2012, to date, prime award spending in Alabama has almost reached $11 billion.  For FY 2011,  Alabama received $37.3 billion in federal contracts and grants.  Social Security payments accounted for $14.4 billion of reported FY 2011 federal spending in Alabama.

Among the most interesting items in the database are the expenditures for the Gulf Oil Spill, with total almost $380 million through FY 2012.  As one might expect, Louisiana was the largest recipient of those funds with 36.7 percent, while Alabama received 2.8 percent.  Meanwhile, landlocked Colorado received 7.4 percent, and Virginia and Massachusetts received a combined 32.5 percent (14.7 and 17.8 respectively).   The database provides a great source of detailed information including the names of recipients, contractors, and related information.  Click the image below to view individual state data.
