New Report Ranks Alabama's Sales Taxes

The Tax Foundation, a national tax research organization, recently published a report that ranks the 50 states on combined state and local sales tax rates. All but five states levy a sales tax, and among the 45 that do, only Colorado (at 2.9%) has a lower tax rate than Alabama's 4%. However, Alabama is one of 35 states that allow local governments to levy additional sales taxes. The Tax Foundation study developed average local sales tax rates for these 35 states and created a ranking based on the combined state and local sales tax rates for all states.

When local sales taxes are factored in, Alabama's combined sales tax rate averages 8.64% and ranks sixth-highest in the U.S. among our neighbors, Tennessee has the highest combined sales tax rate of any state (9.43%), while Mississippi (rank: 20), Georgia (rank: 23), and Florida (rank: 29) are in the middle of the pack.
