A Message from the Chairman, Kevin Harrington
I know that many of you who subscribe to our newsletter are true entrepreneurs, innovators and go-getters. With that said, I'd like to use this outlet as means to share something with you that truly has helped me over the years.
I read this story while on a plane a few years ago, and the ideology has stuck with me for years. I'll share the same quick anecdote with you now:
The Japanese have always loved fresh fish, but the country's coastline has been bleak for years. So in order to give the consumer what they wanted most, fresh fish, the Japanese built bigger and bigger boats that could venture far out to sea. To become even more profitable, they installed freezers on their boats to store fish so they could stay out at sea longer and catch more.
The consumers, however, could tell a difference between fresh and frozen fish, and frozen fish therefore brought a lower price. To solve this problem, fishing companies installed fish tanks on their ships and the fisherman began stuffing the tanks to the brim with fish on every voyage. Unfortunately, the fish would thrash around and become tired and dull; they ended up losing their taste anyway.
Like any good entrepreneur, these Japanese fishermen saw a problem and came up with a solution to save their business: they added a shark to the mix. The fish were still put into tanks, but with a small shark to keep them constantly on the move. As a result, the fish came back from sea fresh, without losing their taste.
Reflecting on this story, I realized that we, like these Japanese fish, need proverbial sharks in our tanks. Without challenges, we have the tendency to become tired, lifeless and dull. We need challenges in our lives to "keep us on the move," to push us closer to greatness and success.
The moral of the story - Challenge yourself to be better every day. Always put a shark in your tank.
Best regards,
