| The 31 Club |
The 31 Club, an integral part of Serra and required of Metro Serrans, was initiated in the 1970's by Father Clive A. Litton in his parish in New Zealand. Seeing a need for support of current religious vocations as well as an increase in vocations, Father Litton encouraged his parishioners to select a particular date each month to attend Mass and offer it with prayer for those currently serving the Church as priests and religious and for an increase in vocations.
While we have at least one Metro Serran assigned to each date, we still have a number of members that have not selected a date. To view the current Metro 31 Club Calendar, please click HERE. To add your name to the calendar, please email serrametrodallas@gmail.com. |

| Family Chalice For Vocations | |
The St. Rita Vocations Council, along with the endorsement and support of Fr. Bob Coerver, implemented the Family Chalice for Vocations Program on Sunday, May 15 which coincided with the World Day for Vocations celebration. Initially, a family will receive a chalice at the closing of the 10:45 Mass and take it home to pray for the intentions of vocations each day of the week. As the program matures and families indicate their interest, additional Masses will be included until each weekend Mass has participants. Fr. Bob gave recognition to the Serrans during his initial comments the first Sunday, for their work in promoting this wonderful program. This is a great example of our working our mission.
St. Rita joins several other local parishes in initiating the Family Chalice for Vocations Program. |
| Destination Serra | | This month's featured club is the original Serra club - the Serra Club of Seattle. |
| SPREAD THE WORD | |

President's Letter by Roland Pedevilla
Dear Serrans:
A grateful thank you to our outgoing Board members Pete Philp and Marianne McGonigle and Group Leader - Brad Camp. Amazingly every other Board Member is returning for another year - not necessarily in the same position but still in a serving capacity for our club. Thanks to them for their recommitment.
We have a very successful Serra Club and have set a good example and standard. As such we have a great responsibility to continue our efforts in time and energy towards the many events and projects coming again this year. There is a very broad spectrum of opportunities in which each of us can make a contribution in an area of personal interest.
For the coming year, I would ask for your renewed efforts in the following three areas:
Presence at Serran functions
Promote Serran awareness
Promotion of Serran membership
We are collectively and individually accountable to the Serran mission and each of these areas helps us with that objective. We will talk of these as we begin our 2011-2012 year and I invite your comments and suggestions.
I'm delighted to be included in the membership of this great Serra Club and very much look forward to working with you to have another successful year and enjoyment in the social activities that rewards our hard work.
Respectfully,
Roland |

Saint of the Month - Saint Josemaria Escriva de Balaguer - June 26th
An estimated 300,000 people filled St. Peter's Square on October 6, 2002, for the canonization of Josemaria Escriva de Balaguer, the founder of Opus Dei. His canonization came only 27 years after his death, one of the shortest waiting periods in Church history.
Opus Dei, which means Work of God, emphasizes that men and women can become holy by performing their daily duties with a Christian spirit. In his homily, Pope John Paul II emphasized the importance of every believer following God's will, as had the newly sainted founder of Opus Dei. "The Lord has a plan for each one of us. Saints cannot even conceive of themselves outside of God's plan: They live only to fulfill it."
Born in Barbastro, Spain, Josemaria Escriva de Balaguer sensed early in life that he had a vocation to the priesthood. Following his ordination in 1925, he briefly ministered in a rural parish. He moved to Madrid, where he obtained a doctorate in law. At the same time Father Escriva was beginning to envision a movement that would offer ordinary people help in seeking holiness through their everyday activities. It was officially founded in 1928.
As Opus Dei grew, Father Escriva continued his studies and his priestly work among the poor and sick. During the Civil War in Spain he had to exercise his ministry secretly and move from place to place. Only after the war did he return to Madrid and complete his doctoral studies. He later moved to Rome and obtained a doctorate in theology. Pope Pius XII named him an honorary prelate and a consultor to two Vatican congregations. All the while, Opus Dei grew in size and influence.
When Msgr. Escriva died in 1975, Opus Dei could be found in dozens of places around the globe. Today its membership includes approximately 90,000 laypersons and 2,000 priests in 60 countries. It is a "personal prelature," a special jurisdictional entity within the Church.

Come and See |
Come and See
by Rev. John A. Harden, S.J.
Chapter 12 - Saint Joseph and Vocations
There are many good reasons why St. Joseph should be the special heavenly patron of dedicated souls - in the consecrated life, in the priesthood, and among the laity. But as the Church teaches, he is especially to be venerated and his patronage invoked because he was the guardian of the Virgin Mary and the foster-father of Jesus.
The dignity of the Mother of God is so sublime that nothing created can rank above it. But as Joseph was united to the Blessed Virgin by the ties of marriage, we may believe that he approached nearer than anyone else to the eminent dignity by which the Mother of God surpasses all human persons in holiness. Marriage is the most intimate of all unions, which from its essence confers a sharing of gifts between those joined together in wedlock. Thus, in giving Joseph the Blessed Virgin as his spouse, God appointed him to be not only the witness of her virginity, the protector of her honor, but also, because they were truly married, a sharer in her exalted sanctity.
Joseph shines above all mankind by the august privilege of his vocation as the foster-father of the Son of God and, therefore, the diligent protector of Christ.
From this two-fold dignity flows the obligation which nature lays on the heads of families, so that Joseph became the administrator and legal defender of the Holy Family. He set himself to defend with a mighty love and a daily concern his spouse and the Divine Infant. Regularly by his work he earned what was necessary for the one and the other for nourishment and clothing. He guarded the Child from death when threatened by Herod's jealousy, and found for him a refuge in Egypt. In the miseries of the journey and in the bitterness of exile, he was ever the companion, the helper, and the upholder of Jesus and His Virgin Mother.
We may confidently say that the Holy Family which Joseph ruled with the authority of a father contained within itself the first beginnings of the Church. So that, even as Mary is the Mother of the Church because she is the Mother of Christ, so Joseph is the Protector of Holy Church because he was the guardian of Jesus and Mary.
|
Dearest St. Joseph, I consecrate myself to your service. I give myself to you, that you may always be my father, my protector, and my guide in the way of salvation. Obtain for me a great purity of heart, a fervent love of the interior life, and the spirit of prayer.
After your example may I do all my actions for the greater glory of God, in union with the Divine Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. And you, blessed St. Joseph, pray for me, that I may share in the peace and joy of your holy death. Amen. |
Fr. John Harndon, S.J. wrote extensively on vocations including Come and See - Theological Reflections on the Promotion of Vocations, a short treatise that gets to the heart of vocations. The above chapter is the last of the twelve chapters. For your own copy, order through the publisher. To read on our website, click on the above title.
