Interested in how an author creates a novel? My husband is inviting comments on a first draft of his latest work for young readers (and their parents and grandparents).

Fourteen-year-old James Asia's life changes the day a long-lost relative leaves him an unexpected inheritance--a thousand-foot long container ship. Pursued by a multinational crime syndicate known as CASPER, James must first save himself before he can save his parents and, oh yeah, prevent a world war. Who is CASPER and what do they want with the Kismet? How can he prevent CASPER from goading two squabbling nations into igniting Word War III? James doesn't know, yet, but with the help of unexpected friends and using some of the mysterious cargo aboard ship, he just may stand a chance.

Happy Mother's Day!
I'm really looking forward to my next quilting retreat over Mother's Day weekend. The class is full, so there'll be lots of energy, piles of fabric, sharing of ideas, making of friends, and camaraderie.
This Mother's Day will be special for me for another reason as well. My own mom (and dad) recently sold their house in North Carolina and moved to a little house next door to me here in Maine. Getting together for brunch will be much easier now!
Like many of us, I'm sure, I inherited my love of fabric and of making things from my mom. While she doesn't consider what she creates "art," the rest of us know how talented she is. Felted wool clothing and creations are her current passion. So, thank you to my mom for her influence and inspiration. And best wishes to all moms for what they give to all of us. Until later,

2012 Maine Lobstah Summertime Quilt Retreat
August 18-22, Sat. Evening thru Wed. Afternoon
After a Saturday night lobster dinner, the following four days will allow students to either complete a simpler project, or to get a good start on a more ambitious project.
Fee of $420.
Below is a photo montage to whet your appetite. The lobster dinner is an annual event sponsored and served up by our local lobstermen to raise money for educational scholarships. A great way to fuel up for the following days of creativity!

New Nebraska Classes!
For those of you in the middle of the country, I'll be teaching 2 multiple day classes in Nebraska this July 16th-20th.
My dad is a Nebraska farm-boy, but aside from childhood family visits, I have not returned there for teaching. Thank you to Material Girl in Grand Rapids for the invitation!
Cutting Loose: July 16-17(Monday-Tuesday)
Learn collage piecing in a free-form and serendipitous way, as described in her new book, Serendipity Quilts. A painterly approach will be presented, with freehand drawing, cutting, and quilting. Celestial Portraits: July 18-20 (Wednesday-Friday)
Learn the basics of a fabric-collaged portrait in a fun and no-pressure "cutting loose" way. Create a personified sun's or moon's face using Susan's designs as a starting point. Class moves in a step-by-step fashion, with each student adding their own unique touches in the process. For class registration, contact the shop directly: Material Girl: Fabrics, Fibers, and Quilting Supplies www.materialgirlfabrics.com 3415 West State St. Grand Island, NE 68803 308-381-6675 materialgirl@mgfabric.com
