Given Land cover
The Given Land is a novel written by my husband, which was inspired by our family's trip to New Zealand. When predators invade their island home, the bird heroes of the Given Land are forced to fight for their existence. Geared to young adult readers (aka our son, Sam), it will appeal to adults as well.

Winter Solstice 2011

With these longer nights and falling temperatures, some primal part of us stretches, yawns, and turns around three times before settling down to snooze. A season of inactivity, especially here in a northern clime, encourages an atmosphere of reflection. We make lists: How did the previous year go? How can we make the upcoming year better?

I want to thank my students for making 2011 my busiest year yet for teaching. All totaled, I traveled to Virginia, Arizona, Texas, Oregon, California (3 times!), and locally Maine and New Hampshire. Some months were quite full but always rewarding. I meet so many great people, see beautiful sights, and get immersed in the creativity of those in each class.

For myself, creatively, the year was successful as well. As most of you know, my quilt, "Dixie Dingo Dreaming," won its category at the International Quilt Festival. I didn't envision that the quilt started in snowy Maine would take me down to balmy Houston - with an added treat to travel there with my mother.

Now, I look forward to 2012 and time early on to finish up the quilt series of my son, Sam. Then, I believe I've collected enough new fabric (like I really needed more?!) to start on a new big animal quilt. Stay tuned!

It's been my pleasure to communicate with you each month via this newsletter and hope you enjoy receiving these updates in the coming year. A thank you to all I've crossed paths with and a wish to all for a wonderful holiday season and a healthy and creative new year.

May you have a warm and twinkling Solstice,

Susan

Take a Class this Winter with Susan

The days are shorter but there's still time to sign up for a class with Susan this winter. Whether a five-day retreat at a Maine B&B or a three-part course at a local (for Susan) Maine or New Hampshire fabric store, Susan will have you quilting as you never imagined you could.

Serendipitous Sea Turtle:

3-Part Course at Quilt Essentials, Auburn, ME

Working with Susan's sea turtle design, she takes you through her cutting loose collage process step-by-step, from fabric selection through quilting and binding. This is a template-free class, encouraging playfulness, serendipity, and a willingness to cut loose.

Celestial Portrait:

3-Part Course at Portsmouth Fabric Co., Portsmouth, NH

Sundays, Jan.22, Feb.19, March 18

Learn the basics of a fabric-collaged portrait in a fun and no-pressure "cutting loose" way. Create a personified sun's or moon's face using Susan's designs as a starting point. Class moves in a step-by-step fashion, with each student adding their own unique touches in the process.
