The Given Land is a novel written by my husband, which was inspired by our family's trip to New Zealand. When predators invade their island home, the bird heroes of the Given Land are forced to fight for their existence. Geared to young adult readers (aka our son, Sam), it will appeal to adults as well. September has slipped by and Autumn is here. Our Fall colors are a little late this year, so we still have the Leaf-Peeping season to look forward to. September marked the beginning of a bout of travel that will take me all over the country. I just returned from a week in Sisters, Oregon, teaching two great classes at a beautiful location. A thank you to Jean Wells, Tamra, and, of course, my wonderful students. Soon, I'll meet more students-to-be in Alexandria, VA and Phoenix, AZ.
I usually leave the bragging to my husband, but this month I'm pleased (and honored) to share with you the announcement that my quilt "Dixie Dingo Dreaming" won first place in one of the special exhibits at this year's International Quilt Festival. The particular theme was "Good For You" and I was inspired to create a quilt of my dog Pippin, who is good for me physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
Due to entrance rules, I can't show the quilt until next month after the festival opens in Houston, so stay tuned for the unveiling in November's newsletter!
I will be in Houston during the first week of November to accept my award and to visit the show. Maybe I'll see you there!
Until later,
Susan

Schedule of Maine Quilting Retreats 2012
Here is the long-awaited schedule of next year's retreats I'm hosting here in Harpswell, Maine. There's one for each of the winter, spring, and summer seasons. Each retreat will be held at the Harpswell Inn, an iconic Maine bed & breakfast.
All retreats will be a maximum of 15 students, minimum of 10. Please contact me if you're interested--and certainly before booking any flights.
2012 Fuzzy Slippers Winter Quilt Retreat
February 13-17
Ever wonder what a Maine winter is like? Well, come see for yourself! Enjoy Valentine's week playing with fabric, eating yummy food, hibernating, or lounging around a big ol' fireplace at a coastal B&B--you'll never need to take off the fuzzy slippers! Bring a sweet-heart to share your room--or just treat yourself. This 5-day class allows you to delve into fabric collage with any subject you'd like, with Susan's guidance along the way. Read the class description for Fabric Images on Susan's website. Fee of $525 includes lunches and dinners, snacks, chair massage (with optional full massages), and evening presentation by Susan. Plus, there is never a lack of things to do in Maine in the summertime--you may want to schedule an extra day or more for sightseeing on either side of the class! Read the class description for Fabric Images on Susan's website.
Fee of $420 includes lunches and dinners, snacks, chair massage (with optional full massages), and evening presentation by Susan.
As a local flavor bonus, Saturday evening's meal will be held on the bay and under a tent at a lobster dinner fundraiser hosted and served up by local lobstermen.

"Peace"
For those who have been following the progression of the series of portraits of my son Sam, here's an in-progress peek at "Peace." The series is rather Warhol-esque, with each of the four portraits a variation in color of the same photograph. The theme is based on our bus stop greeting of "Peace, Love, Tie-die, Save the Whales." This morning ritual started early in his school career and has continued into high school. For other color versions, refer to February and March newsletters. |
