The Given Land is a novel written by my husband, which was inspired by our family's trip to New Zealand. When predators invade their island home, the bird heroes of the Given Land are forced to fight for their existence. Geared to young adult readers (aka our son, Sam), it will appeal to adults as well. In Harpswell summer begins with Memorial Day and the annual parade. I didn't grow up in a small town, but it warms my heart to see how seriously and reverently the town treats it's Memorial Day Parade. It's a full 1/8th mile in duration through the not-so-obvious center of a very spread out town. Yet, a bagpiper leads the high-school marching band, scout float, antique cars, fire engines, kids on bikes, and Harpswell Festival volunteers. We're founding members of that last group and it's been a pleasure to help add Harpie the Sea Serpent and other giant festival puppets to the parade.
A couple weeks ago a new event was added in Harpswell--my very own Springtime Quilting Retreat! The weeks of rain we had endured stopped long enough to allow walks and as much sight-seeing as time permitted. Otherwise, it was 2 days of creativity with a very excited bunch of ladies. Piles of fabric were everywhere--talk about springtime color! 20 great projects got on their way and I look forward to seeing and sharing in the results as they complete the quilts (as I do with all my classes). A recurring request on the student evaluation forms was to make this an annual event and I'd be pleased to do so. To view some of the awesome work (and glowing comments!) from this retreat, check out this link to my website: www.susancarlson.com/Class_Photos.
Next comes the Summertime Retreat on July 9th and 10th. The May students gave me some great feedback which I'll apply to the July class. A major change is that I'll be limiting the July retreat size to 18 students. I'm about half-way there with sign-ups. Let me know if you're interested! More class information is below.
The July retreat dates coincide with "Celebrate Summer in Harpswell"--a weekend of art tours, live music, and craft demonstrations. FMI: info@ashcovepottery.com or harpswellmaine.org/galleries.
Have a safe and sunny month--Happy Summer Solstice on the 21st!
