Outdoor Award
| John Hackbarth, Greenwood DC, Stephen Brown, Norm Hoffman, SM Troop 60, Ryan Brown, proud father of Stephen. |
At the Troop 60 Court of Honor on April 24, 2012 the National Medal for Outdoor Achievement was presented to Stephen Brown, an Eagle Scout, and member of the troop. This is the first time this award has been presented to a scout in the Oregon Trail Council.
In Stephens's words this is what he accomplished to qualify for the award.
"I camped in a tent or on the ground for over 130 nights along the Oregon coast, in the Willamette Valley, in Oregon's Cascades, in the Central Oregon High Desert, along the Oregon - Idaho border in the Snake River Canyon, and in the southeast corner of Oregon along the Trout Creek Wilderness and Oyhee River area. I hiked over 300 miles through these areas. I spent over 50 hours of swimming ,rowing, boating, and canoeing at Camp Melakwa, Willamalane Pool, River Road Pool, Deschutes river, McKenzie River, Umpqua River, and Fern Ridge Reservoir. I rode a bicycle over 400 miles through parts of the Willamette Valley including one ride over 50 miles and two over 35 miles. In addition to completing the Camping, Hiking, Aquatics, and Riding components of the Outdoor Award, I also completed the Adventure portion. Activities I completed for, and in addition to this award, include: attending the 2010 National Jamboree in Virginia; snowshoeing, rock climbing and snowboarding; earning four 50 mile awards through backpack trips; earning the one mile swim award; completing the certification as a first responder for wilderness first aid through the Wilderness Medicine Training Center; completing certification as a leave no trace trainer through Pearson Outdoor education; and climbing to the top of Mt. Adams, the South Sister, and Mt. St. Helens."

Camp Melakwa Weekend Camping
Help save the Council thousands of dollars in federal forest lease fees by taking your troop, team or crew to Camp Melakwa this summer or fall for a weekend of camping adventure.
Oregon Trail Council pays the Forest Service an annual lease which is reduced by the number of users so it is important to get Scouts and leaders using Camp Melakwa, even if they are not camping there for summer camp.
Camp Melakwa is an outstanding site for weekend camping with a great lake to fish, trails to hike and makes a great base camp for more high adventure treks.
Complete a weekend camping form submit it to the council office (2525 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Eugene, Oregon 97401) and plan now to help reduce our annual lease and give your Scouts an exciting weekend (or day trip).
