2013 National Jamboree
Summit

Registration now open for the 2013 National Scout Jamboree

July 13-29, 2013, West Virginia

Oregon Trail Council's 2013 National Scout Jamboree Troop is now forming!  Scouts and leaders from all over the nation and world will convene for the first time at BSA's newest site, the Summit Bechtel Reserve in wonderful West Virginia.

We're calling all eligible Scouts and leaders wishing to participate in the July 13-29, 2013 jamboree and tour.  Oregon Trail Council seeks qualified Scouters wishing to participate with our council contingent.  Log onto www.bsajamboree.org to review leader qualifications.  Please share the link with all Scouts in your troop or team and encourage them to complete and youth application.

Troop leaders will be selected by February 2012 and will participate in planning the trip.  An exciting post jamboree tour is planned and will include historical sites in Williamsburg, Jamestown, Washington DC, Gettysburg and New York.

An exciting high adventure program including whitewater rafting, zip lining, rappelling and mountain biking will be included in the normal jamboree activities.

Visit the Summit website by clicking here.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Scott Lahey (541-513-3888) or Mike Quirk (541-284-4385).

Scouting's Biggest Day of Service
November 12th

Oregon Trail Council, in an effort to remain better environmental stewards and in alignment with the spirit of our Leave No Trace policies, would like to suggest a REUSABLE BAG Scouting For Food Event!

Our Council has encouraged units to plan a one day "knock and ask" food collection campaign for the last few years for two very important reasons. 1: Councils across the country report significantly more food is collected for local food pantries using this method. And 2: Our community gets to actually see the Scouts in uniform performing this important community service. If your unit follows this plan, switching to a much greener, reusable bag method is a snap.

Just ask families to provide 1 or 2 reusable bags for their Scout. My family has many of these bags. Units provide some cardboard boxes (kept in the backs of the collection vehicles) to dump the bags into. The boxes can in turn be dumped into the collection bins at the collection sites or turned in at your Local Food Bank if your unit is outside of Eugene.

For more information about this important event, contact:
Your District Scouting For Food Coordinator or District Executive

Recharter News

2012 is right around the corner, and now is the time to complete your unit's Recharter.   The on-line process of renewing your dues to National BSA is quicker and easier than it has ever been!

One of the main advantages of on-line rechartering is that you do the editing of your unit's roster to be sure everyone's personal information is correct. After you have submitted on-line and then printed out your Recharter roster, be sure to obtain all of the required signatures, otherwise it will be returned to you.

Don't delay in collecting everyone's individual dues this month, and then be prepared to write one check to the council for your entire Recharter.  If families aren't able to pay the national $15 dues, use the white Registration Aid form in your packet.  But, be sure to send in the $2 insurance fee per person.

Use the 2011-2012 OTC Registration Fees (half sheet on tan paper) and the green worksheet  titled, "Regarding calculation of total fees dues" in your packet to determine all this.

It is important that everything is accurate since we all work off of these rosters all year long, especially with recording the scouts' advancement achievements.

By working and completing your Recharter now, you'll be able to sail through the holidays without this still on your "to do" list, and know that you've "done your best to do your duty"!  Thanks in advance for making this task a priority this month.

Community Service

Send us info on your unit's service projects!   Send a brief description and photos to:cotto@otcbsa.org

To log community service hours, units need to establish their account on the Journey to Excellence service hours website:

http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/Awards/JourneyToExcellence.  Here you will find good information about logging service hours and also about the Journey to Excellence award overall.   Part of the log in process for unit leaders involves knowing the unit's id number.  This number is available by contacting the council office at 541-485-4433. Units should identify one leader or parent to be in charge of logging hours.

 Journey to Excellence

JTE3

Scouting's Journey to Excellence" is the BSA's new council performance recognition program designed to encourage and reward success and measure the performance of our units, districts, and councils. It is replacing the Centennial Quality Awards Program as a means of encouraging excellence in providing a quality program at all levels of the BSA.

Starting in October, units, districts and the council will begin to complete their score sheets.   Oregon Trail Council spent some time evaluating the key indicators that the award measures and set some "bold" goals to help guide us to excellence.  The following chart shows the council's progress on these goals.  The results will change and be updated as the year progresses and more information becomes available.

How is your unit doing?  Do you need help understanding the form or where to find information?  Call your district executive (541-485-4433) to help start the process.
