Liberty Flag Retirement

Liberty Flag

Boy Scouts from Eugene Troop 282 display the Liberty Flag at summer camp moments before it was retired at the end of July.  This flag flew over the New York Harbor next to the Statue of Liberty for the past ten years.  Star Scout, Tharin Beach, acquired the flag last fall while on a family vacation to the East Coast.  He noticed that the flag was quite tattered and frayed.  So he asked the island caretaker who would be retiring that flag.  The Caretaker wasn't sure and said he'd get back in touch with Tharin when he found out the answer.   It took awhile, but Tharin finally heard back via an email on the 4th of July!  The gigantic flag arrived in  Eugene one week before the Troop left for summer camp

The box weighed 21 pounds and was three feet high. The Liberty Flag measured  15' x25'.   It took two Scouts to carry the flag when folded in a triangle.  Troop 282 was greatly honored to be able to retire such a recognizable flag that millions have seen over the years.

Good Turn for America

Highlighting the "Journey to Excellence Award"

BSA Community Service-Corvallis Troop 170 serves the Jackson Street Youth Shelter

Oregon Trail Council would like to highlight and recognize Troop 170, chartered to the  Corvallis Sunrisers  Kiwanis Club, for their year round service to the Jackson Street Youth Shelter, Corvallis OR.   Dorothy Carlson, Troop Committee, describes the project:

"In December 2009, Corvallis Troop 170 initiated an ongoing, year-round, youth-helping-youth service project, dubbed the "Jackson Street Youth Shelter,  Got Milk? Delivery".

Each week a different troop family contacts Jackson Street Youth Shelter to learn what perishable food items staff members need to properly feed that week's residents, youth in crisis.  The family purchases their choice of foods from the request list and deliveries the groceries to the shelter.  Although staff anticipates and appreciates one delivery per week, some families choose to make multiple food drops within their seven-day period of service.

As advance notice to those whose turn approaches, each Friday the troop emails the upcoming three families on the schedule a reminder.  If unable to make their delivery that week, they then contact another family down the list and trade dates.

Should the expense pose a financial challenge, the troop treasury gladly assists with expenses.

The troop adds new members to the end of the delivery schedule, giving every family a chance to opt out, though none have.  In fact, families have found the project to be a rewarding experience and a simple way to make a positive difference.

Send us info on your unit's service projects!   Send a brief description and photos to:[email protected]

To log community service hours, units need to establish their account on the Journey to Excellence service hours

website: http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/Awards/JourneyToExcellence.  Here you will find good information about logging service hours and also about the Journey to Excellence award overall.   Part of the log in process for unit leaders involves knowing the unit's id number.  This number is available by contacting the council office at 541-485-4433. Units should identify one leader or parent to be in charge of logging hours.

Camp Melakwa Weekend Camping

Melakwa BoysHelp save the Council thousands of dollars in federal forest lease fees by taking your troop, team or crew to Camp Melakwa this summer or fall for a weekend of camping adventure.

Oregon Trail Council pays the Forest Service an annual lease which is reduced by the number of users so it is important to get Scouts and leaders using Camp Melakwa, even if they are not camping there for summer camp.

Camp Melakwa is an outstanding site for weekend camping with a great lake to fish, trails to hike and makes a great base camp for more high adventure treks.

Complete a weekend camping form submit it to the council office (2525 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Eugene, Oregon 97401) and plan now to help reduce our annual lease and give your Scouts an exciting weekend (or day trip).
 Journey to Excellence

Scouting's Journey to Excellence" is the BSA's new council performance recognition program designed to encourage and reward success and measure the performance of our units, districts, and councils. It is replacing the Centennial Quality Awards Program as a means of encouraging excellence in providing a quality program at all levels of the BSA.

Starting in October, units, districts and the council will begin to complete their score sheets.   Oregon Trail Council spent some time evaluating the key indicators that the award measures and set some "bold" goals to help guide us to excellence.  The following chart shows the council's progress on these goals.  The results will change and be updated as the year progresses and more information becomes available.

How is your unit doing?  Do you need help understanding the form or where to find information?  Call your district executive (541-485-4433) to help start the process.

Cub Scout Fall Roundup Underway! - Cub Scout Packs "Start your Engines"

During this time of year, when school and activities are getting started up, it is very important that Cub Scout packs find effective ways to publicize that this is the best time for new families to join their pack. All Cub Scout Packs need to be revving up their engines by organizing joining opportunities for boys at their school and in their neighborhood.

Cub Scout Packs also need to make sure they are prepared for the New Year. Is your pit crew (adult leaders) complete so that every den has a leader? Has the pack committee developed a race plan (annual calendar of events)? Some simple preparation and coordination can help everyone, including new boys and their parents get started right.

A successful joining night is always preceded by good preparation. Your district executive is a great resource-call them now! There are support resources and personnel that can help your unit be successful.  Every boy deserves to be invited to join Cub Scouting.

It is also very important to make sure the new Tiger Den gets off to a good start. How many boys are in the den? How are they doing on their advancement? Have the parents been invited to a pack committee meeting or training? Who is the den leader? Do the boys know that they have started a special adventure towards their Eagle Scout? A Tiger Coach that works with the new den leadership for a few months at the start can really help.

If you need help getting revved up or you can help by putting a sign in your yard, handing out flyers, or putting up posters please call 541-485-4433. Resources like the Tiger Costume, yard signs, flyers and more are available through the Oregon Trail Council Volunteer Service Center.
