As I See It... | |
Here it is the spring of 2011 and already we're planning our council's 2013 National Scout Jamboree contingent to our new and permanent home The Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve in West Virginia. Our council jamboree committee is forming and soon will be identifying and selecting troop leadership. You'll find the adult leader requirements in this Trail Smoke and if you are interested in serving in an adult role with our contingent, please email me at mquirk@otcbsa.org
I hope your unit is planning a big activity this summer. I remember taking my den (and a few parents) to Cub Scout Summer Camp at Camp Baker a few years ago. We obviously had a blast, and our den became more cohesive and we hit the fall ready to go. The kids still talk about it and I urge to you sign your entire pack up as soon as possible for Cub Scout Summer Camp by clicking here.
Finally, let me offer my sincere thank you to all of you who keep our great flame burning bright here in Western Oregon. We are a council blessed with outstanding properties, chartered organizations, trained and dedicated leaders and the best kids in America. The impact we make on children is profound and never needed more. Thank you for all you do for Scouting. |

Annual Health and Medical Form
When you go to daycamp or summer camp this summer, don't forget your Annual Health and Medical Record Form. Scouting requires one of these forms to be filled out every year before going to a camp. If you are attending Cub Scout Daycamp, or Cub Scout Resident camp you need to fill out parts A and B. If you are attending a camp longer than 72 consecutive hours, you will need part A and B, and a physician to fill out part C. If you are attending a high adventure camp all parts of the form must be filled out.

Camperships for 2011 | |

Camperships are "camp scholarships" made available to registered youth within Oregon Trail Council through generous donors. These camperships are intended for Scouts whose families have financial difficulties. The campership pays up to half the camp fee. Camperships are made available for long-term camps, Cub day camps and resident camps. Our campership fund is limited; therefore, all requests for assistance are due to the council office by June 1, 2011.
The Committee Chair, Scoutmaster, or Cubmaster completes an application, which is available at the council office, or online. Letters requesting assistance are also accepted. Parents or boys should not be asked to make the request to the council office. The request should include the boy's name and a short explanation of need, the unit number and the camp the boy will be attending. Camperships are given to youth attending Oregon Trail Council camps only.
Those wishing to contribute to our campership fund can do so by calling Michael Quirk at 541-284-4385.

Eagle Banquet | |
Celebrate Oregon Trail Council's 35th annual Eagle Banquet and honor the accomplishments of the current class of 2010 of Eagle Scouts on Thursday, April 21 in Eugene.
Community leaders and businesses are invited to sponsor an Eagle Scout at the banquet, or consider a corporate sponsorship of this important event in a young man's life. New Eagles and sponsors will sit together during the dinner and program, and have the opportunity to learn more about the Scout and his future career interests.
If you would be interested in sponsoring an Eagle Scout or providing corporate sponsorship of the event, please contact Debbie Knechtel at knechtel@otcbsa.org

2013 National Jamboree
National Scout Jamboree & Historic Tour
July 13-29, 2013
Scouting's flagship event is one-of-a-kind. It's a gathering of approximately 45,000 Scouts, leaders, and staff that showcases everything that is great about the BSA and its members. Over the course of 17 summer days, once every four years, the Boy Scouts of America comes together. The result is the national Scout jamboree and tour which preliminarily include historic Williamsburg, Virginia, Washington DC and New York city.
Cost to be determined in late spring 2011
Adult leaders interested in participating with the council contingent should review the qualifications and email interest to mquirk@otcbsa.org. Interviews and selection to take place in the fall of 2012
A New Venue: The Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve In 2009, the BSA purchased 10,600 acres of property adjacent to West Virginia's New River Gorge National River area in order to create The Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve (the Summit). The Summit is the new home of achievement, adventure, and innovation in Scouting. With world-class facilities and a focus on outdoor action sports, the Summit will welcome Scouts to a whole new jamboree experience in summer 2013.
High Adventure The excitement of the jamboree isn't limited to Scouts. The Summit will feature a large visitor area, where day-users can try out some of the activities that the Scouts are dialing in around other parts of the Summit. Whitewater rafting and kayaking, rock climbing and bouldering, and mountain biking are just a few of the activities offered at the Summit. There's also skateboarding, BMX, shooting sports, and zip-line challenge courses. And that's just the beginning.
History The first Boy Scouts of America national jamboree was scheduled to be held in Washington, D.C., in 1935 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Scouting in America. Unfortunately, the jamboree was canceled because of a polio outbreak in Washington. When the first jamboree was finally held in 1937, Dan Beard lit the opening campfire using flint and steel. Scouts from all 48 states brought the wood that was used in the campfire. There were some 27,232 Scouts camped on the National Mall under the Washington Monument. Since that time, 16 national jamborees have been held, the last in 2010.

Upcoming Trainings | | Trainer's EDGE The Trainer's EDGE replaces the Trainer Development Conference (BSA 500) as the required train-the-trainer course for Wood Badge and NYLT staffs. It is meant to supplement the practice offered through Wood Badge and NYLT staff development, with a focus on the participant, while raising the level of skill a trainer brings to the staff experience. Only practice can polish these skills, but this course is intended to "train the trainer" on behaviors and resources while offering hands-on experience in methods and media. It is a course that will be invaluable for anyone engaged in public speaking. Click here for registration information The Powder Horn Course is an opportunity to safely participate in fun and challenging outdoor activities, an introduction to resources to improve unit programs, exposure to new and exciting high adventure activities and a challenge for both youth and adults to creatively deliver safe high adventure programs in their units. This course is an introduction to resources and is not designed to be a certification for any event. In order to earn the Powder Horn award medallion, participants must attend at least 10 electives, and will meet expert consultants in our area who will be providing the program. Be prepared to have fun attending this action-packed, hands-on outdoor experience. Click here for dates and registration NYLT Our adult staff is in place for National Youth Leadership Training, and we are selecting and beginning the training of the youth staff. The whole staff is looking forward to the NYLT conference. We are planning a super fun and educational time in June. NYLT Dates are June 26 to July 2. Info can be found on the web at otcbsa.org/NYLT.
