As I See It... | |

Michael S. Quirk
Scout Executive |
Not too long ago, we were preparing for and celebrating the centennial of the Boy Scouts of America. So many of our units celebrated in special ways and made it a truly memorable experience for their Scouts. Now as we move towards spring and summer programs, let's all make a commitment to putting the "outing" in Scouting. Plenty of research and parent and youth polls indicate that boys leave Scouting because they weren't satisfied with the quality of program. However, when asked what they enjoyed most of their Scouting time, departing Scouts overwhelmingly said the outdoor program.
I have to admit, if it weren't for the dynamic and year 'round camping program my Scoutmaster insisted on, I too would be a casualty of boredom and an early departure. In Oregon Trail Council, we have camping opportunities kids from around the country dream of, now we just have to get them into camp. This Spring, make an effort to sign your troop, team, pack or den up for a camping adventure at Camp Baker or Camp Melakwa and I promise you, you'll see better youth participation and advancement.
I'm excited about the new Bechtel Family Scout Reserve (The Summit) being developed by the Boy Scouts of America in West Virginia. This 10,600 acre site will help the BSA fulfill its mission of serving America's youth for another 100 years, and will offer a diverse program of high adventure, complimenting what is already offered at the other three high adventure bases (Philmont, Northern Tier and Florida Sea Base) and will serve as the permanent home of the National Scout Jamboree and site of the 2019 World Scout Jamboree.
Thank you for volunteering to mentor kids. I'm proud to be a Scout and honored to be Scout Executive of a great council-together we're keeping the Scouting flame burning bright in Western Oregon. |
Annual Volunteer Recognition Dinner
2011 Silver Beaver Recipients
The Annual Council Recognition Dinner was a great success. Over 100 volunteers gathered to recognize outstanding Scouters from every district. The Silver Beaver award is the highest honor a local Council can bestow on a volunteer. This year's recipients were Dr. Richard Mentzer from Greenwood District, Eugene Regan from Doug Fir District, Laura Lahey from Cascade District, Greg Perry from Benton District, and Roger Langlie from Chinook District. Also presented at the dinner was the President's Award to Scott Lahey. Thank you again to these amazing volunteers.

2012 Philmont Council Contingent
Oregon Trail Council is now taking reservations for two crews to attend Philmont Scout Ranch in the summer of 2012 as part of our council contingent. Each crew will consist of 12 Scouts and adults. This is a great opportunity for those Scouts who would like to experience Philmont and may not get the opportunity otherwise.
The cost of the trek is $740 per person. Travel costs totaling $500-600 will be determined by each crew during the planning process. The minimum age required to attend Philmont is 14 years by January 1, 2012, or completed the eighth grade prior to participation and be at least 13 years of age. A non-refundable deposit of $100 per person is required to reserve a spot. Reservations are on a first-come, first-served basis.
For more information, download the Philmont Contingent Reservation Form or contact Debbie Knechtel at the Council Service Center, 541-284-4389. |
Boy Scout Troop 62 | |
Mark Miranda, Chief of Police in Newport, is grateful for the support of Troop 62. He writes:
" One evening during the search of the shooting suspect in Waldport, members of Troop 62 came to the Command Post and gave us several boxes of Boy Scout popcorn. Their donation and support was very much appreciated."

2011 Boy Scout Summer Camp

Dear Scout Leaders,
Camp Baker is entering its 56th year of summer camp operation. With its beautiful setting and facilities, Camp Baker will be the highlight of your troop's year of Scouting. The purpose of Camp Baker is to build and strengthen your troop through a week of day to day activities of pure Scouting.
While providing your Scouts with an excellent opportunity for advancement, summer fun, and new experiences, you will find many camp activities that will strengthen your patrols and troop. A well-trained staff consisting of the "best of the best", endeavors to help provide each Scout with a memorable long term camping experience. New Scouts will receive a fast start toward First Class as they spend time in our Scout Skills area. Older Scouts will be challenged to new heights with our premier climbing wall, COPE course, Timber Slugs and our premier sailing program. Your Senior Patrol Leader and the rest of the Patrol Leaders Council will be challenged to learn new leadership skills. A troop can leave after a week at Camp Baker having put the capstone on their "Ideal Year of Scouting."
Our veteran staff awaits your arrival. Be sure that all of your Scouts attend the fun and personal growth of a week at Camp Baker in the summer of 2011.
Applications to camp and for staff are available online at www.otcbsa.org today! Fill yours out and get it in ASAP as space fills up quick.

Annual Health and Medical Forms
When you go to daycamp or summer camp this summer, don't forget your Annual Health and Medical Record Form. Scouting requires one of these forms to be filled out every year before going to a camp. If you are attending Cub Scout Daycamp, or Cub Scout Resident camp you need to fill out parts A and B. If you are attending a camp longer than 72 consecutive hours, you will need part A and B, and a physician to fill out part C. If you are attending a high adventure camp all parts of the form must be filled out.

2011 Eagle Banquet | |
Celebrate Oregon Trail Council's 35th annual Eagle Banquet and honor the accomplishments of the current class of 2010 of Eagle Scouts on Thursday, April 21 in Eugene.
Community leaders and businesses are invited to sponsor an Eagle Scout at the banquet, or consider a corporate sponsorship of this important event in a young man's life. New Eagles and sponsors will sit together during the dinner and program, and have the opportunity to learn more about the Scout and his future career interests.
If you would be interested in sponsoring an Eagle Scout or providing corporate sponsorship of the event, please contact Debbie Knechtel at knechtel@otcbsa.org |
2011 Friends of Scouting Campaign

In January, the Council led by Ron Tyree, President of Tyree Oil and Council Vice President of Finance, kicked off our 2011 Friends of Scouting Campaign. We will be scheduling presentations at each unit and also contacting our Community leaders to secure their support for another Great Year of Scouting Fun in Oregon Trail Council. Please be ready to give your support when you get that call.
Thank you to all the individuals, companies, foundations and families who are supporting our 2011 Friends of Scouting campaign. The council is off to a great start towards achieving our goal of $564,000. Campaign leaders are confident that with our great plan and so many volunteers helping, we will achieve our goal. One thing we know about our Scouting family is that they will financially support our programs if asked. If you have not yet made your gift to Scouting, we encourage you to do it. Remember, all Scouts deserve a well funded program and for us to keep camping and activity fees low, we must continue to raise Friends of Scouting dollars.
