A Catholic Summit on Faith,

Citizenship and Public Policy:

Our Challenge and Our Responsibility

"I feel a tremendous sense of urgency."

-Archbishop Jose Gomez

We have been CALLed to action!

CALL's annual meeting was held in Denver on August 12-14 and it was truly a wonderful time of prayer and faith.

Denver Mass

Bishop Olmsted, Cardinal Cipriani, Archbishop Gomez, Archbishop Chaput, Bishop Chau.

We were fortunate to have Archbishops Jose Gomez and Charles Chaput, Bishops Thomas Olmsted and Raul Chau, and Cardinal Juan Luis Cipriani, the Cardinal Archbishop of Lima with us. We were also blessed to have many priest members of CALL in attendance, all of whom provided a unique opportunity for us to gather in prayer and celebrate the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

The conference challenged us to take our faith and translate it into action in every aspect of our lives - public and private. We had presenters who challenged us as individuals and as members of the Catholic Association of Latino Leaders. Nowhere was this more true than when Archbishop Gomez addressed the gathering in these words: "It is one thing to acknowledge the fact that our country and our Church are becoming more and more Hispanic. That is simply the reality. What we do with that reality, however, is up to us."

Saturday's Mass was for intention of the repose of the soul of Archbishop Pietro Sambi, the Apostolic Nuncio to the United States, and a long time CALL friend. Sunday's Mass was for the intention of long time member and supporter Emilo Moure of the Knights of Columbus - a dear friend to CALL who passed away two weeks earlier.

During the annual meeting, the Board of Directors, in conjunction with CALL's Editorial Committee (Jose Gonzalez, Jose Ambrozic, and Archbishop Charles Chaput) unveiled a letter to Pope Benedict XVI from CALL. The letter included CALL's response in faith to the Holy Father's encyclical entitled Caritas in Veritate (Charity in Truth). In presenting the document, it was noted  that it was more than just a letter or a document, it was a prayer, it was "our prayer," and it will be delivered in Rome by a CALL delegation in September.

Next steps...

After the discussion on the "Caritas Prayer," Archbishop Gomez stated that CALL's next steps should be: To deepen our personal relationship with Jesus Christ, and then bring our faith to the issues of the day. To this Archbishop Charles Chaput noted that the Hispanic Catholic community can and will make a difference in public policy if they stand up and use their voice. Bishop Olmsted added his concluding comment - that in all we do we should invoke the patronage of Our Lady of Guadalupe who should lead our every effort.

Chairman Ruben Escobedo ended the weekend by reminding us of Cardinal Cipriani's message that we do not have to be large in numbers to make a difference. He challenged everyone to return home anxious to get to work for Our Lord.

Our Mission Statement

To work within the context of our culture, and in communion with our bishops, to promote the well-being of the Latino community and the common good in the United States. This Catholic Association of Latino Leaders provides a forum for members to strengthen their faith through prayer, education and service. We commit to being a national voice for Hispanics on social justice issues and to impact the national dialogue and its outcome in favor of improving our nation's policies affecting Latinos.

Our ranks include leaders from varying business and professional backgrounds dedicated to transforming our lives and communities according to the Gospel, and speaking out on social and faith issues important to both the Catholic Church and Latinos. As such, we seek to not only be a part of a national dialogue on these important issues, but to be a force of influence on the outcome of such dialogues in ways tangible and relevant to our Church, communities and country.
