Letter from GBRW President Mary Windsor Saggus |

Dear :
Excitement is in the air. The intensity surrounding the presidential election is palpable. Coupled with football season this fall promises intensity, to say the least. In my house and I am sure for many of you football season is a blur. Home games with tailgating, away games if we are lucky, and gatherings when we stay home to watch on TV. I love football season. By November 6 we will be on the downhill side of the season. Hard to believe how quickly it is barreling toward us.
Auburn vs. Alabama, Mississippi State vs. Ole Miss, or Vestavia Hills vs. Mountain Brookwe love to hate each other rivalry weekend. But when our teams are not playing we are the best of friends fighting together for our Republic. Republicans are like families, fighting about issues but coming together in times of need. This, my dear friends, is a time of need. That is why GBRW is beginning the "United We Win!" campaign. We are united to elect Mitt Romney and DEFEAT Barack Obama. We will have buttons to pick up at the meeting on Monday. I hope you will take one to wear and several to give to friends. If an argument develops about an issue, take a step back, remember the goal, and ask your opponent to join our campaign.
Len Vaught, President of Huntsville Republican Women, came up with the slogan and had buttons made. "United We Win!" is her tag line. Len served in the military as did her husband. Two of her children carry on the family tradition and currently serve. She asks that every conservative put all issues aside until after the November 6 election. I am honored to support Len and her family and completely agree that all issues be put aside.
Let's support the Republican Party and all conservatives as passionately as we support our football teams. Yell like crazy on Saturdays. 'Dog cuss' your opponent if you like. Come Sunday morning we are a loving family again.
United We Win!
Sincerely,
Mary Windsor

Alabama Republicans rally around Chick-fil-A
"It's about more than chicken sandwiches."
So said Alabama House Speaker Mike Hubbard, during an appearance on CNN last week to discuss his support for Chick-fil-A.
The Atlanta-based restaurant chain has been in the spotlight because of recent statements by its top executive, Dan Cathy, opposing same-sex marriage.
Cathy's comments drew a backlash from left-leaning politicians and civil rights groups, who called for a boycott of the restaurant famed for its chicken. City officials in Boston and Chicago threatened to revoke the chain's business licenses.
Conservatives led by radio host and former Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee rallied behind Chick-fil-A Wednesday with a show appreciation that drew droves of customers to area restaurants.
Hubbard, an Auburn Republican, said he shared Cathy's support for traditional marriage and said that his religious views shouldn't be grounds for discrimination.
"It's about religious freedom and freedom of speech," Hubbard told host Carol Costello on Wednesday during an interview on CNN Newsroom. "They can do whatever they want to do. If you don't agree with them, then don't eat at the restaurant."

Caring for Alabama
GBRW to Assist Families of the 1-167
Susan Todt, GBRW Caring for Alabama Chair, orchestrated the Bravery in Bronze Memorial Day event to honor the 1-167th Infantry Battalion Alabama Army National Guard.
Those 700 soldiers are being deployed this week and will spend the next year in Afghanistan.
GRBW will offer support to the families left behind. At the August 13 meeting we will collect school supplies for the children. All grades are represented and need supplies. If you prefer not to shop we will gladly accept a donation for supplies. Make your check payable to "Caring for Alabama."
Supplies are available at Fancy Goods Variety on Rocky Ridge Road in Vestavia Hills. Owners Leslie Self and Diane Clower, GBRW members, have offered a 10% discount to anyone mentioning that the supplies are going to the 167. |
