AALHA's 2012 Annual Education Conference
Conference Logo
AALHA's 2012 Annual Education Conference will be held on Wednesday, March 7 at the Chaparral Suites Conference Center at 5001 N. Scottsdale Rd. Please mark your calendars for this important event. Five NCIA CEUs will be offered to all attendees.

We are blessed with a dynamic keynote speaker this year. Mr. Justin Rohner is a well-known motivational and educational speaker, and business consultant. His presentation is titled "Better Business - Better Life." A taste of his presentation is:  The Truth is, Business is a Game, and even with all the external pressures of economic hardship, suspicious surveyors, and insurance payout reductions, there is more opportunity today than ever before for Care Homes to truly THRIVE in Arizona. Learn how to quickly identify the real opportunities available to you in today's market place that will help you leap beyond survival, and how to make them part of your business!

Other presentations will feature representatives from the AZ Dept. of Labor, the AZ DHS, and the Director of Case Management from Banner Baywood Hospital.

For those of you attending from points beyond the metropolitan area, please contact admin@aalha.org for a list of nearby overnight accommodations. For more information regarding the 2012 Conference, please contact Linda at admin@aalha.org or Nancy Simmons at npsimmons@msn.com.
Southern Arizona Chapter February Forum
The Southern Arizona Chapter monthly forum will be held on Thursday, February 9, from 2:00 to 4:00 PM at HealthSouth Rehab Hospital, 2650 N. Wyatt Dr., Tucson (Education Rooms A & B). Our speaker will be Adena Windgate from the Pima Council on Aging. One CEU will be given to AALHA Members for attending this presentation. Our meeting sponsor is The Schneider Group.

Central Arizona Chapter January Forum
There will be NO February meeting for the Central Arizona Chapter, due to it being one week prior to the Annual Conference.

The Central Arizona Chapter, in an attempt to accommodate members and guests in all parts of the Valley, will be holding their monthly forums in alternate locations - January on the West side of the Valley and March on the East side. The East side location has yet to be confirmed. Watch for more information (and a calendar of the 2012 forums) in the next edition of your newsletter.
A Recap of Southern Arizona ChapterJanuary Meeting

Thank you to Cathi Starr of the Veteran's Affairs Office for her very informative presentation, and to Joan Janky, Amedisys, for providing the refreshments. AALHA president-elect, Paul Benedetti, reports great things about this meeting and about its leadership.

A Recap of Central Arizona Chapter January Meeting

Thank you to Cheryl Carmichael for her presentation "When The State Knocks at Your Door."  Thanks also to Stacie Leigh Brown, owner of Always Home Assisted Living, for the refreshments. Conference keynote speaker, Justin Rohner, gave a short teaser of his conference presentation. You're not going to want to miss this dynamic, motivational and educational speaker at the March 7 Annual Conference.

For copies of Cathi Starr's and Cheryl Carmichael's presentation handouts, contact admin@aalha.org.

Wondering About Wanderers

Wandering by a resident with dementia can result in elopement from your facility.  If the resident is not found quickly, injury or possibly death can occur.

Wandering can be normal behavior - we have all seen a confused resident going from room to room or chair to chair.  Wandering in itself is not harmful.  Wandering, in fact, can be very helpful to the resident:

a)   Reduce anxiety

b)   Provide needed exercise

c)   Keep the individual busy and feeling that they have a purpose

The wandering referred to above is wandering that does not have the purpose of leaving the building.

CRITICAL WANDERING is wandering with the purpose of leaving the building.  Critical wandering is life threatening and must be prevented.

Congratulations on 100 years!
One hundred year old Grace Arndt (resident of Gaile Dixon's Dream- catcher at Paradise Heights) received birthday wishes from around the country, as well as the Valley, thanks to the magic of Grace and staffFacebook.  Perhaps the first centenarian to have a social media account, Grace's party on December 31 garnered newspaper and TV attention, as well as visits from her Wisconsin family, local friends, and US Congress- man David Schweikert.  Her birthday wishes came true thanks to contributions from KFC (favorite food), Cold Stone Creamery (vanilla ice cream cake), and red roses (Phoenix Flower Shops).  (Photo caption:  "Staff at Dreamcatcher Paradise Heights celebrate with Grace.")

Thank You, Ken Denton
Honorable mention this month goes to Ken Denton, 2011 AALHA past president and owner of Phoenix Best Care Home. Ken was featured on KFNX radio on January 16, to talk about his assisted living home. Several times during his segment, mention was made of AALHA and how to contact us. Thank you, Ken, for the free advertising.

AALHA members: If any of you are featured on radio and/or television, please send an email to Linda at admin@aalha.org and you will be spotlighted in a future edition.
