Home of the Month: The Villa on Sweetwater
by Peter Colten
I'm really not the type of person who sings my own praises easily. When I was advised that The Villa on Sweetwater was chosen to be AALHA Home of the Month and that I needed to write something about it, I was at a loss. So, rather than take that approach, I thought I would just tell you about how I feel when I visit.
On any given day, I walk through the front door at The Villa and smell something amazing baking in the oven. Then I hear the laughter of a large group of residents, family members, visitors and caregivers sitting around the table discussing the events of the day. With the help of Karen, our fabulous activities coordinator, the activity can be participating in an art or gardening project, or whatever else gets the creative blood blowing. No matter how busy I am, I always find myself joining in and having a great time. At times, a family member whose loved one has passed, or a volunteer who used to visit a certain resident, will come back to visit just because they missed everyone.
How did I get into this business? My typical answer is that my wife, Jana, dragged me, kicking and screaming! Now after 13 ye ars, on most days, I'm glad she did. On those especially rough days where nothing seems to go right, I will spend some time at The Villa. That always brings me back to the reason we all got into this business in the first place.
These are just a few of the reasons that make The Villa on Sweetwater such a special place.
For more information about, or to tour The Villa on Sweetwater, contact 480-483-4747 or visit The Villa On Sweetwater.

A Recap of Central Arizona Chapter July Forum
In lieu of an educational presentation, attendees were given a live, online demonstration of the new AALHA.org website, its capabilities, features, and benefits. Following the demo, a great discussion occurred among the group about possible changes to days/times of monthly forums beginning in 2012. If you have been unable to attend our forums due to date/time, please send us an email and let us know what would work for you. We want to know how we can better serve you.

A Recap of Southern Arizona Chapter July Forum
The second chapter meeting was held on July 14. While it was a small group, a lot of really good (and informative) discussion occurred. We will need to build attendance in order to justify future educational presentations. However, the discussion format is providing the Board members who attended with much-needed information about what the members of this chapter want and need. Please invite other care home owners and managers - as well as providers - to future meetings, so that we can continue to learn more about how AALHA can benefit you.

A word from our sponsor:
Contract Service Provider
It is your Assisted Living Home. Therefore, you have a right and responsibility to establish rules, policies and procedures. Often times contract service providers (like visiting nurses, therapists, etc.) walk into assisted living homes without even introducing themselves. And, they may even walk out without informing anyone of what occurred during their service with the resident. Any contract service provider entering your home should sign an agreement with you and follow your protocol. More importantly, they should inform you - with notes - of who, what, when, where, and how their service/visit with the resident went. How can you be expected to provide the best service for your residents, if you are not informed by those providing service to the people who live in your Assisted Living Home?
For your FREE sample copy of a Contract Service Provider Resident Care Plan Agreement, please visit our website at www.pcalic.com or call 1-800-673-2558.
