"I resolved to go for the gusto and head out to the Egyptian Event and bring home at least one Top Ten - all in my husband's honor..."
Our October Member Spotlight is on Cindy Harcombe of Desert Sands Arabians, who recently submitted an inspirational Egyptian Event story to our Member News, one that simply must be shared! Cindy and her late husband had owned and shown Arabian horses since the 1980's, but their road to Egyptian Arabian breeding would come a bit more slowly... Cindy recalls her first Egyptian horse purchase in 1985 - an Egyptain-Sired son of Ruminaja Ali, Focus Falcon, who she subsequently showed at the Egyptian Event with David Gardner. More recently in 2009, Cindy purchased her first Straight Egyptian mare as a riding horse: LW Tawalas Amiri (The Minstril x AK Tawala), from member Cindy Hallett. Still, after years spent admiring the legacy of Glennloch, Ansata, and Imperial bloodlines, it was not until 2010 that Cindy and her husband decided to take the next step in establishing a Straight Egyptian breeding program. With the initial goal of establishing a small but top-quality program, they began with three foundation mares: EAI Talraffaa (Talmaal x Raffaalaa), Orashahhna (Imperial Orashahh x RAS Sinamai), and SBF Karizmaa (MB Talmaar x Rakizah). However, not long after establishing this new program, Cindy faced one of her most difficult challenges. "Raising Straight Egyptian Arabians has been a life-long dream of mine and that of my husband," Cindy writes, "however, May 11, 2011 brought a life-altering change to Desert Sands Arabians when my husband very suddenly and unexpectedly passed away." Cindy recalls struggling for many months after her husband's passing before deciding to move forward with the program they had started together. "I knew he would want me to carry on," she writes. With a renewed sense of purpose, Cindy decided to join The Pyramid Society in December, 2011. "I resolved to go for the gusto and head out to the Egyptian Event and bring home at least one Top Ten - all in my husband's honor..."

2012 EGYPTIAN EVENT GOLD SPONSOR Markel Equine Insurance
From behind the scenes, Markel has been involved with The Pyramid Society's Egyptian Event since its debut show! Deborah Mihaloff, the Founder of Markel's Equine Insurance program, personally attended the very first show and continued attending for many years. Her foundation breeding program for racing was centered around her Stragiht Egyptian horses - in particular, MHF Eclipse (pictured right), a Straight Egyptian son of Moniet El Nafis out of the Dalul daughter, Dalya...
For a few years before the track at The Kentucky Horse Park was removed, one of the educational and promotional events at The Egyptian Event was a demonstration race of Arabian horses. Eclipse's full brother, MHF Ultimate, won one of those demonstration races. These demonstrations helped introduce the world to Arabian racing, and because of horses like Moniet El Nafis, MHF Eclipse, ZT Ali Baba, Imperial Nalaseef, Asjah Ibn Faleh, and the beautiful M Shaka, the Straight Egyptian horse showed the world its true athletic ability.
It was with great foresight and involvement that people like Doug Marshall, Barbara Griffith, Count Zichy Thyssen, Judith Forbis, Howell Wallace, and Deborah Mihaloff proved how the Straight Egyptian Arabian horse could no longer be questioned on its ability to excel in performance, no matter how fast or how demanding. Many track records would be set and some still remain because of the influence of Arabian horses.
Because of Deborah's involvement personally with Straight Egyptian horses, she felt that Markel should be at The Egyptian Event. Now the baton has been passed to the the next generation of Straight Egyptian horses via Kimberly Douglas (pictured left with underwriter Dawn Martin), who can be seen at the Event representing Markel and even riding her own Straight Egyptian Arabian.
It is with great pride that Markel and agents like Kimberly Douglas continue to support the Straight Egyptian Arabian horse and the educational programs held at the Event and beyond. Markel has been and will continue to partner with The Pyramid Society to ensure that education and fun will always be a part of the Arabian horse industry!
