July has been an exciting month for The Pyramid Society and its members, with the successful launch of our brand new website being out-shined only by the over $192,000 in payouts awarded from the 2012 Egyptian Event! And we're working to improve The Chariot, as well - we'll be unveiling a new, interactive design in the coming months that will work hand-in-hand with our new site. Stay tuned!
In this edition of The Chariot, you'll find links to our Egyptian Event Recap with exclusive photos, as well as a special short film by Scott Trees highlighting the Event and its impact on the industry. Below that, you'll find several new Member News stories and Member-hosted Events to investigate. And to the left, you'll find important Dates & Deadlines and links to this month's Featured web content.
Finally, we'd be remiss not to mention that, by comparison to the cool weather we enjoyed at the Event, summer has really turned up the heat. Our thoughts are with those who have been impacted by areas of drought and fire, and in response, we've started compiling a list of helpful articles and resources ( click here) for dealing with the heat. We invite your additions to this growing list, so please let us know of any articles or resources that have helped your farm deal with the rising temperatures this summer.

2012 EGYPTIAN EVENT GOLD SPONSOR - Miars Arabian Ranch
Bob Miars' plans for a retirement filled with golf and travel vanished one fall day at a Ducks Unlimited auction, when he met his first Egyptian Arabian. Unbeknownst to Bob, this introduction would alter the course of his life indefinitely, particularly his retirement plans.
Similar to many children, Bob loved horses as a child, but jobs and life often come between a boy and his love for horses. Luckily, only a few short months after his retirement, the boy within Bob was reunited with his childhood love. Immediately captured by the beauty of the horse, Bob purchased The Tyrant (Thee Infidel x Rahfeeka), a Straight Egyptian yearling gelding, while attending a Ducks Unlimited auction. Upon purchasing the gelding, Bob contacted Arabians Ltd. to transfer ownership and he was invited to attend Arabians Ltd. Newcomers Conference the following February, 2001. "It was the beauty and charisma that initially drew me in," Bob said, regarding his initial interest of the breed, but his decision to become an active Egyptian breeder was made when he "learned how unique these horses are and how treasured they should be". The Newcomers Conference at Arabians Ltd. sparked Bob's interest in the breed, but it was subsequent conversations with Hank and Sandy DeShazer of DeShazer Arabians that built the commitment Bob and his wife, Sue, now hold as breeders... 2012 Survey Results
We're pleased to offer The Chariot readers a first glance at some of the feedback gained through this years Egyptian Event and Membership survey! Take a look: - Over 96% of respondents plan to renew their Membership in 2013!
- Among the benefits available to Members, the clear top three were the annual printed Membership Directory, the networking opportunities, and the access to information through The Pyramid Society website!
- The Pyramid Lecture was the most popular educational activity at this year's Egyptian Event!
- Among suggestions for future Egyptian Events were later seminar start times, more seminars on the lineages of Egyptian Arabians, and a Youth walk/trot class.
- The Barn Parties at this year's Event had more positive comments than any other social activity!
When asked to share their general thoughts on The Pyramid Society and The Egyptian Event, our 2012 Members had no shortage of great things to say: "The Member News is highly advantageous because it allows me to share information about my horses and farm at no additional cost." "The Pyramid Society has such an impact...like no other organization dedicated to a specific variety of the Arabian horse!"
"I don't know of any other show that incorporates educational, social, and the horse classes quite the way the event does."
"I can't thank the Pyramid Society enough for the changes that have occurred in the show ring to stop excessive shanking and whipping of horses. I was literally in tears (happy tears) watching the classes and seeing the handlers and their horses standing relaxed on the rail as they awaited their turn."
"The new web site is so exciting and is offering so many new opportunities yet explored."
If you've been watching from the sidelines, there's no better time to get involved. Membership in The Pyramid Society means being a part of something bigger - the preservation, perpetuation, and promotion the Straight Egyptian Arabian horse! JULY MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
John & Jéanne Abernathy - Brookhill Farm, LLC, Franklin, TN
"...watching Ansata Iemhotep capture the Supreme Champion Stallion title that year, I was overcome by his immense type and presence... I look for that same visceral reaction to horses to this day to help me find my favorites, and then study them with an educated eye to affirm my emotional response." For our July Member Spotlight, we'll take a journey with Jéanne Abernathy to Brookhill Farm, LLC in Franklin, Tennessee... Jéanne writes, "In 1976, my father bought my mother a 2-year-old half-Arabian gelding to help her adjust to life in Illinois away from our native Tennessee." Abu's Fancy Ben was his name, and when Jéanne turned 13, he became her own - staying with her family until 2008, when he passed away at 34 years old. "No matter where I lived or what job I had, I never stopped looking for a way to share my life with Arabian horses - all because of the enduring relationship I had with my beloved Ben." Over the years, Jéanne's love for Arabian horses grew into a captivation with the beauty and history of the Straight Egyptian. So, in 2003, she decided to place her focus there. "Next year, Brookhill Farm will celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the purchase of our foundation mare and the beginning of our Straight Egyptian Arabian breeding program," she remarks, "The birth of every foal is the culmination of the dream of that young girl who spent every afternoon in the barn growing up with her horse."
