MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Diane Taylor and Laura Cronin - OGM Arabians, LLC

"Every year we go to The Event knowing while we all compete, we all share and celebrate each other's triumphs!"

Our May Member Spotlight highlights Diane Taylor and Laura Cronin of OGM Arabians, LLC in Southlake, TX. Diane recounts a tale of serendipity when it comes to breeding Egyptian Arabians...

"Laura had a coworker who had a 19 year old Straight Egyptian grey mare. She was a lovely AK Shah Moniet daughter, AK Meshura, and he leased her to us with the hope she could be bred one more time." So, they began a search for the right stallion and soon thereafter attended a newcomers conference at Arabians Ltd. to learn more about Straight Egyptians. It was there that Diane and Laura fell in love with the beauty, elegance, and soulfulness of Egyptian horses. "We decided to breed our old grey mare to Pimlico RCA, and she had a beautiful colt. This turned out to be her final foal, and we named our business "OGM Arabians" to honor this Old Grey Mare and the delight she has brought to our lives."

Rockin' Heart Ranch Hosts Equine Reproduction Workshop with Mark Burke

Rockin' Heart Ranch - Potlatch, Idaho - Want to learn more about horse breeding? Here is a wonderful, hands-on opportunity! Join Nancy Wight of Rockin' Heart Ranch, Ltd. on May 26, 2012, for an exciting Equine Reproduction Workshop with the wonderful Mark Burke from Amethyst Acres Equine Center.

Mark's many years of successful techniques will be shared in this hands-on workshop, as well as: stallion training for collection, lab procedures, ultrasounding mares, A-I, I-V blood draws, and many other useful hands on management tools

The workshop will cost $150 for one person and a second person in the same family will be an additional $50. It will include breakfast and lunch and snacks on Saturday, and will also include a notebook, Equine Reproduction 101, for mare owners, graciously provided by Jon Wiesman of Exodus Breeders. There will be plenty of time to ask questions, and Mark will provide the same workshop outline that he uses in his University Classes. A door prize will be drawn on Saturday afternoon.

Anyone who wants to learn to ultrasound mares will be able to pay an additional fee and return on Sunday for hands on Ultrasound opportunity. Please check with Nancy if you are interested in learning to ultrasound mares.

Mark Burke started working in the horse business when he was 10 years old, and equine breeding work is his passion. He earned a Bachelors Degree in Animal Science from Texas A&M and has over 30 years of experience in the horse industry, including Breeding and Farm Manager positions at Arabians Ltd., Colonial Wood, Glorieta Ranch, and Discover Arabians.

Today, he and his wife Deb own and operate Amethyst Acres Equine Center in Buchanan, Virginia. Amethyst Acres is a full service, all-breed reproduction facility with 34 stalls, located on 47 acres in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. Mark also developed and teaches "Introduction to Equine Reproduction" at Averett University in Danville, VA.

Mark and Deb are passionate breeders of Straight Egyptian Arabian horses and became an Arabians Ltd. Affiliate Farm in 2007.

News from Round Mountain Arabians and the AR Horse Tales Literacy Project

Round Mountain Arabians - Big Flat, Arkansas - Laura Graves of Round Moutain Arabians in Big Flat, AR writes to share her experiences in April with the Horse Tales Literacy Project, as well as a personal story of a very Straight Egyptian birthday!

Horse Tales Literacy Project, sharing the magic of horse and reading with first and fourth graders, is again providing memories for a lifetime for children. Over 10,000 children in Arkansas are learning to read about horses and are inspired as they meet characters in their books. Horses are going to school in every part of Arkansas and creating magical memories for first graders.

This year many Arabian farms are hosting this event and several Egyptian Arabian farms including Rose of Sharon farm owned by Drs. Karen and Mike Pallone. The farms will welcome over 300 youngsters. These little darlings will fall in love with Egyptian Arabian horses and hopefully grow up, become successful, and have their very own Egyptian Arabian!

A trail ride to raise funds for the literacy program will be held May 4th, 5th and 6th at Camp Robinson in Conway, Arkansas. You are invited for a weekend of children, trail rides, clinics, dinners, entertainment and refreshments. A silent auction will be held with outstanding treasures for all. Details of the ride are on the Facebook page for Arkansas Horse Tales Literacy Project. Last year over $10,000 was raised and we would love to welcome you to a weekend of laughter and good times.

Furthermore, you are always invited to join the team and have children visit your farm, read to your cherished Arabian, and know the magic of the Egyptian Arabian horse. This program is so very rewarding and great fun as friends gather to share the love of the horse. For details of how to begin, please contact Gene or Laura Graves, 870-746-4500, or rmarab@hughes.net

Just for fun, and on a personal note, our Straight Egyptian gelding, Imvision, donated to the very first Black Stallion fund raiser by two dear friends, Sue Burnham and Joan Skeels, has a new home. He was delivered to Lakewood, Florida, on Wednesday, and was the birthday present for our cherished granddaughter. She found her 'birthday present', where else but in round mountain amurrahher bedroom! He stood waiting patiently for her to return from school and she is thrilled beyond words. He tolerated flashes going off with mirrors and apparently is house broken, too! Our technology- whiz grandson set up Skype so we watched in real time - what a thrill for us.

Also, the posted photo is of a first grader at Round Mountain Arabians reading to Straight Egyptian filly Amurrah RMA who just arrived at her new home in Kuwait!www.roundmountainarabians.com - www.horsetalesliteracy.org
