2011 EGYPTIAN EVENT IN REVIEW

The Pyramid Society wishes to thank all of its members who

so graciously supported the 2011 Egyptian Event. From

owners to volunteers and attendees, your participation

helped make this year's Event a grand success!

TOTAL PAYOUTS PROVE IMPRESSIVE AT THE

2011 EGYPTIAN EVENT!

Nearly $225,000 was paid out at the 2011 Egyptian Event! Yes, you read correctly - nearly $225,000 for a horse show with just over 300 horses! Quite impressive by anyone's standards!! A special "thank you" to all our exhibitors, as well as congratulations to the breeders and owners of this year's champions, especially the 2011 Egyptian Event Supreme Champion (Gold) Mare Laian Al Shaqab (Al Adeed Al Shaqab x Meseda Al Shaqab), owned by Al Shaqab, Member of Qatar Foundation, and Supreme Champion (Gold) Stallion Al Raheb AA (Laheeb x The Vision HG), owned by Al Fawaz Stud.

The amateur-led Egyptian Breeders' Challenge classes trumped all others in the amount of prize money, with the respective winners taking their share of a total payout exceeding $140,000! Barbe Jo Myers of Barmyre in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, was first-place winner in the Filllies class with Marmyre Amurrah (Imperialamirkamar x ESA Malaaka). Bob Miars of Miars Arabian Ranch in Murchison, Texas, was first-place winner in the Colt class with Masir Al Mar (Amaar Al Rayyan x Maymaara Maysam SA). Both can proudly attest to the slogan "You've got to be in it to win it," as each are $28,000 richer because of their participation in this lucrative amateur to handle Egyptian Breeders' Challenge program. Plans are already well under way for next year's EBC, so visit The Society's website often for further details on how you can participate in this very rewarding program.

The futurities for Straight and Egyptian Sired horses exceeded $72,000 in payouts! Congratulations to these respective winners. In addition to the big payouts and tense moments associated with having horses entered in these futurities, there's another program that is literally "just for fun." The brain-child of Allison Mehta, it's named the "Kalkata Stakes" and provides the opportunity for participants to choose the horse they think will win in the Two Year Old Straight Futurity Classes. If their horse wins, they share a portion of the pot. This year's winners took home a combined total of over $6,000 in Kalkata winnings in this "just for fun" activity. It's clever, it's creative, and it's synonymous with the Event!

MEMBER AND EGYPTIAN EVENT SURVEYS

Over 170 members responded to the general Member and Event surveys. This feedback provides valuable insight to our leaders in assessing what programs are working and what programs need re-evaluating in our ongoing journey of promoting the Straight and Egyptian Sired horse.

In the Members' Survey, the majority gave The Society relatively high marks for its programs. And your answers ran the gamut - many think we're doing a great job, and a few think we have some room for improvement! Certainly we are grateful for each response and need to hear both the good and the not so goodl! Overall, as an organization you can collectively take pride in the fact that the majority of your peers believe in and support the organization with the knowledge they are directly supporting the future of the Egyptian Arabian horse. As Life Member Janet Stinson so succinctly worded it, "Sharing the passion for the Egyptian horse is possible due to The Pyramid Society." Or, as long-time member Polly Knoll attested, I plan to rejoin "because it's part of my life."

The Egyptian Event portion of the surveys showed a moderate or high degree of satisfaction in every category, with the seminars topping the charts. On the other hand, your written responses also indicated that both the weather and the schedule needed some tweaking. For the weather, well, no promises there, but we have learned the challenges involved in taking six full days of activities and condensing them into a five day show! The Board will reasses this decision at its August meeting, so rest assured we'll get the kinks worked out for next year.

Again, a sincere note of gratitude to each respondent. Your thoughts are needed, and your actions are necessary in our mutual efforts to promote the Straight Egyptian and Egyptian Sired on an ongoing global basis.

Royal Heritage book cover

Royal Heritage:

The Story of Jordan's Arab Horses

Co-authored by HRH Princess Alia, the eldest daughter of the late King Hussein of Jordan, and the artist and author Peter Upton, Royal Heritage tells the story of the Arab horse in Jordan, from the early days of the Bedouin tribes to the 21st century.

Princess Alia includes many fascinating personal reminiscences - about the horses she holds so dear and the people involved in the Stud through the years, the famous and infamous, family and friends, heads of state and handlers. The work is richly illustrated with paintings, drawings and photographs from old archives and private collections, as well as up-to-date portraits of the Stud and its inmates. Peter Upton gives an in-depth account of the horses themselves: the breeding, lineage and preservation of the hugely important Jordanian bloodlines.

264 pages, hardbound. Available for $70 plus shipping/handling.
