Partnership Grant Winners Diverse in Mission & Place.
| | 19 Organizations win Partnership Grants |
Over 150 northern Nevada nonprofit organizations applied for Partnership Grants in 2012. The volunteer selection committee had the unenviable job of making the rock- hard decisions to choose the 19 organizations that will take home a grant of up to $5,000.
What is immediately striking about the group of 2012 winners is their diversity.
In the mission area of Health, winning organizations are as large as Washoe County's H.A.W.C. and as small as Humbolt Volunteer Hospice in Winnemucca.
 | |
Stars mark counties with programs supported by Partnership Grants |
Organizations with missions serving health and human services, arts, animals, children and teens in Washoe and Douglas county and the elderly in White Pine County were chosen because of their good business practices, strong programs and because they filled a critical niche in their community.
As one of the grantees remarked, "Together we make a quilt of community for Nevada".
Partnership Grants support organizations' existing programs and operating budgets, funds that are the most difficult to raise from private philanthropy. In some cases they have been leveraged as funding matches for large Federal grants.
Because the Partnership Grant application is simple and the grant vetting process timely, small organizations without the expertise of a professional grant writer can compete with the largest of our region's established nonprofits.
Partnership Grants are a one-of-a-kind program. These critical grants are completely funded by donations from fundholders and program supporters. This year we were able to make 19 Partnership Grants. Without your support the grants will dry up. Your generosity keeps the good flowing. Our goal in 2013, with your help, is to make 30 Partnership Grants, to enhance and strengthen our quality of life. |

Protect your Deduction
The IRS will not give you a second chance.
Two recent cases in U.S. Tax Courts make it clear that to take a charitable tax deduction donors must show "total compliance" with procedural requirements. In these two cases donors made substantial, valid contributions to legitimate charities that were generally, but not in total compliance with IRS rules. Because the gifts were not in total compliance, the donors were sanctioned with a complete loss of their income tax deduction. The tax law does not allow for corrections after the due date for the income tax return. |

Connecting People and Changing Worlds.
| | Scholars, benefactors,and families get together at a social. |
When you create a scholarship at the Community Foundation, you put in place your selection criteria, the award amount and perhaps the schools attended. You or someone you appoint may be on the selection committee. The selection committee sifts through the vetted applications and a lucky student is chosen.
You have been involved every step of the way. You have read the essay, looked over the transcripts and references and may have required the student to interview with you and the selection committee.
Before the Foundation sends the check, there is one more thing to do.
Did you know you will be encouraged to meet your scholarship winner?
Benefactors, board members scholarship winners and families get to know each other at a casual social in a friend of the Foundation's backyard.
We have been told by the students, their families and our Board members that this is the single most meaningful Foundation event of the year.
| | Before she passed away in January 2012 Nadine Stegelmeyer was thrilled to meet her scholarship winner, Shelby Fowlkes. |
We take philanthropy personally at the Community Foundation, and scholarships are a very direct and personal way to touch a
person's life.
When you create a scholarship at the Foundation, you will be able to see the difference you make in a young life.
If you take your giving personally, you should get to know us.
| | Michaela Wright, student at Georgetown University and Nancy Kennedy, Fundholder. |
"Meeting and interviewing our applicants, and choosing one was extremely rewarding.
Michaela Wright, our first recipient, is a perfect candidate. We are thrilled to help her achieve her goals."
- Brian and Nancy Kennedy
