A Chance for Nevada to Shine.
I have written before that Nevada sits at the bottom of the list for volunteerism. Now thanks to efforts of my friend, and Community Foundation Professional Advisor Council member, Pete Parker, we have a realistic and convenient method to make volunteering part of the lives northern Nevada citizens.
Pete, owner of NPcatalyst, is creator of Summer Of Service-Northern Nevada, a three month campaign and website to involve Nevadans in volunteerism and community service. Think of the new Summer Of Service-Northern Nevada website as a giant digital rolodex with listings of every imaginable volunteer opportunity throughout our region.

Geothermal Mineral Rights Generate Money for Girls in Fallon.
| | Oser Fund supports girl's softball leagues in Fallon. |
The Margaret E. Oser Foundation created a permanent endowment fund to benefit women and girls in Churchill County by donating the mineral rights of a geothermal well to the Community Foundation. The annual grant amount is determined by considering a fixed percentage of the royalty receipts generated, and the annual net earned income of the endowment fund investments.
This year Fallon girls are benefitting from healthy fund investments and growing royalties. The Soroptimists International Club of Fallon volunteers as the Foundation grant selection committee and considered grant requests on the Foundation's behalf. They chose to recommend the following programs to receive a combined total of $5,030 in grants.
Churchill County Juvenile Probation - FIT program Mother/ Daughter circle. A focused intervention program for teenage girls (residents of the Teurman Hall) and their mothers who join them weekly for the seven week program.
Care Net Pregnancy Care Center - Earn While You Learn Program. Grant to purchase lesson materials for parenting classes aimed at young parents and expectant young mothers.
Churchill County Youth Softball League - Girls softball teams support.

Many Northern Nevadans are Not Far From Homelessness.
It's not the people you think. It's people who have never been homeless. They are families, neighbors, children.
In fact, there are 1,800 homeless students in the WashoeCounty School District alone.
You can help.
It doesn't take much to make a difference - $15 per day, $60 per family of four, provides a place to stay and services to help get them back on their feet. They're not looking for a hand out, just a hand up.
Please extend your hand and give to the Homeless Not Helpless fund. The Community Foundation is honored to help with oversight and management of the collected funds. You can be sure all proceeds of your tax-deductible donation to Homeless Not Helpless Fund of northern Nevada will be used charitably right here in our region.
