Hot Off the Presses... Another Scandal!
Just last week we saw the story about Michael Stickler in the RGJ and the lawsuits he faces for fraud committed in the name of charity, and this week the Chronicle of Philanthropy tells about how the Central Asia Institute, founded by Greg Mortenson, author of Three Cups of Tea, also personally profited under the guise of charity.
How can people protect themselves? I'm hoping to write an article for the Reno Gazette Journal to address this subject because there are a
few easy ways people can do their own investigating to avoid contributing to people and charities with less than honorable purposes. But really, why do it yourself when the Community Foundation is here and ready to help? This is what we do, and we are more than happy to serve.

Who are those Guys?
The Community Foundation Board is its greatest asset.
One of the reasons people come to the Community Foundation is because we are local. We live here. Our Board members, listed in the column at right are active respected leaders in our community. They have expertise in investment management and community issues. They share a common understanding of the importance of philanthropy in building community. The next time you run into one of these fine people ask them about the Foundation and how can it benefit you. |
A Welcome Check in the Mail.

"The endowment check we received this year was a huge help with our operation expenses. It was one of the the few pleasant surprises in a budget year. We didn't expect the endowment investment to have done as well as it did"
The Reno Chamber Endowment was established in 2001, making the The RCO was a "early adopter" of the Community Foundation. With the exception of 2009 and 2010 when the RCO left balance of the endowment to weather the investment storm; grants arrived steadily and quietly to the organization each spring. As the endowment balance grows through gifts and investment performance so do the annual disbursements.
Gifts to the RCO Endowment are sent to the Foundation on a regular basis. Many gifts are under $100 and made in honor of a performance or birthday or milestone of passionate fans. Supporters of the RCO are able to continue making their annual appreciation gifts and to perhaps purchase a season ticket for eternity by including the RCO Endomwent in your trust or will.

Jorge Avalos Villagomez, First Male Applicant for Hispanic Heritage Day Nursing Scholarship, Wins Three-Year Award.
| | Jorge Avalos Villagomez |
Thanks to a gift from an anonymous donor to the Hispanic Heritage Day Nursing Scholarship fund,
Jorge Avalos Villaagomez and two fine young women from Reno will be able to study nursing at UNR and TMCC.
Born in Michoacán, Mexico, Jorge immigrated to the United States in 2008 with his father, and attends Wooster High School in Reno. Through diligent study he learned English and passed his proficiency exams, Next month he will graduate will a 3.6 grade point average, and enter the TMCC Nursing program this fall. After nursing school and working in Reno for a few years Jorge has ambitious goals.
Becoming a travel nurse is my next step. I want to travel to different parts of the world, being of service to those in need from developing countries.
Presently I work weekends to help my family and save money for college. A nursing degree can help me to have a better life and to make a positive difference in the medical field. ... I will not disappoint you.
Congratulations to Jorge Avalos, and fellow winners, Cecilia Mendoza, and Valeria Garcia from Hug High School! We wish you well. |
