Partnership Grant Story
RAVE Family Foundation Helps Family Cope With Loss
We ask our Partnership Grantees to report back their grant outcomes. Sometimes outcomes are statistical and sometimes a story tells it all. Here is a portion of the the report from the 2010 Partnership grant received by Northern Nevada RAVE Family Foundation.
| N.N.RAVE Family Foundation offered an interlude of normalcy during difficult times |
RAVE Executive Director Rique Robb wrote, "For the first half of this fiscal year, our success story comes from a child who has touched more lives in her 17 months of life than I could ever hope to touch in mine. In March of 2010, her parents learned that Danielle* (pseudonym) had been diagnosed with a rare and fatal genetic disease for which there is no cure. Danielle had been attending RAVE as a sibling (without a disability) with her older brother, Ernie*, who has autism. When her parents learned of her illness, rather than secluding her from all outside contact, they continued to bring her to RAVE, so that she could have fun and interact with other children before her disease took over.
Danielle entered the gates of Heaven on August 3, 2010. Four of RAVE's staff members attended her funeral and celebrated all of the brightness that Danielle brought to the world, and her parents showed their appreciation for RAVE by having donations sent to our organization in Danielle's name. Two weeks to the day after she passed, we had a respite session at the Center. Danielle's mother, Audrey*, brought Ernie to the session. The mom was still very fresh with emotions from the loss of her baby girl, but she managed to thank us, and tell us how she appreciated the support she received from us when Danielle was ill. She continues to bring her son to RAVE, and he has talked about his sister, in the way that only a big brother could, and we continue to celebrate the legacy that she has left us with. I can honestly say that without respite, this family would have suffered greatly, but because of the support that we were able to provide them with, they have touched our lives with their strength. We are honored to have made a difference in their lives." |
Site Visits Help Foundation Volunteers Learn about Partnership Grantees.
| | Kathleen Miller, Executive Director of Austin's House met with Program committee members at recent site visit. |
Partnership grants go to nonprofits throughout our community who are often making do with less today to provide their services.
Program committee members visit
the grantees to witness first hand the good they are doing in our community. They are visiting 24 organizations this year and getting to know the staff and programs and learning what the Community Foundation could be doing to help these nonprofits accomplish their missions. Committee members report that these visits give them a greater understanding of the nonprofits' work and significance to our way of life.

2011 Scholarship Applications Pour Into Foundation
| | Tracy Turner Scholarship Guru |
By the first day of Spring the majority of the scholarship deadlines are over and the selection committees are scheduling their review meetings. This year they have a lot of work ahead of them. Hundreds of applications were submitted this year. Why the huge increase?
According to Program Officer Tracy Turner two factors. " We changed the application procedure, creating a common application for most of the scholarships and perhaps more importantly, asking the students to fill out the application online, saving time and postage problems."
Online applications have simplified the collating and disbursing of the students' information to the selection committees and have saved numerous hours of organizing, copying and filing paper applications. We are able to handle far more scholarships and student applications than last year and our ability will grow as next year we will ask all students to apply on-line.
