All Saints Day
All Saints Day is a holy day of obligation, a day we celebrate all the saints known and unknown, and is also the inspiration for the name of our school. It arose out of the Christian tradition of celebrating the martyrdom of saints on the anniversary of their martyrdom. When martyrdoms increased during the persecutions of the late Roman Empire, local dioceses instituted a common feast day in order to ensure that all martyrs, known and unknown, were properly honored.
In Ms. Lehman's Religion classes, middle school students each researched a saint from history, created a poster presentation, and included a prop or costume. Middle school students then presented their fascinating discoveries to the younger grade levels of pre-kindergarten through the third grade. Middle school students enjoyed utilizing their creativity and public speaking skills as the younger students enjoyed learning new facts about our many saints. All learned how blessed we are to be apart of a school community that was named after All Saints!

Fall Festival
The Fall Festival was held on Monday, October 31st. As usual, the 8th graders provided a fun event for the students of All Saints and their families. There were some new games such as a shooting range, a photo booth, whipped cream eating contests, balloon popping and more! The eighth grade would like to thank everyone for their support of this fundraiser. All proceeds benefit the eighth grade end of the year class trip. ~ Mrs. Reid and Ms. Nickler, 8th Grade Homeroom Teachers

Teacher Feature
Ms. Blaisdell - Fifth Grade
As a true Florida native, my family and I were always at the beach soaking up the beautiful South Florida weather. My younger brother and I spent countless summers riding our bikes to the beach and snorkeling or just playing in the waves. In my free time, I still enjoy going to the beach and spending time with my family, although, it is a little more difficult because my brother has since married and now lives in Houston, Texas with his wife and beautiful daughter. At a very young age, I knew I wanted to become a teacher. I started working in preschools and aftercare programs at age sixteen. After graduating South Fork High School in Martin County, I began pursuing my dream to be a teacher. I attended Florida Atlantic University where I earned a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education. Upon my college graduation, I received an offer to teach at All Saints. This is my fifth year teaching 5th grade at All Saints, and I can honestly say my dreams have come true. I am so blessed to be a part of such an amazing faculty and nurturing community. I chose teaching to make a difference in children's lives not realizing how much of a difference they would make in mine.

Ms. Lehman Rides to Help Defeat Lou Gehrig's Disease
On November 5th in Largo Florida, Ms. Lehman participated in a 65 mile bike race for the Ride to Defeat ALS in order to raise much needed funds for The ALS Association. This ride was an opportunity for us to work together to support those affected by Lou Gehrig's Disease and to spread awareness of the urgency to find treatments and a cure. Often referred to as Lou Gehrig's Disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive, fatal neuromuscular disease that slowly robs the body of its ability to walk, speak, swallow and breathe. The life expectancy of an ALS patient averages 2 to 5 years from the time of diagnosis. Every 90 minutes a person in this country is diagnosed with ALS and every 90 minutes another person will lose their battle against this disease. ALS occurs throughout the world with no racial, ethnic, or socioeconomic boundaries. This crippling disease can strike anyone. Presently there is no known cause of the disease though support is bringing researchers closer to an answer.
Ms. Lehman chose to take on this community service challenge after losing a friend, Laurie Moore, to Lou Gehrig's Disease. "Our friend lost the battle to this disease in May. We then formed a team of riders and have been training for this event since June. It was such an amazing experience to challenge the body. My motivation was remembering that people battle cancer and diseases every day, I can certainly turn the wheel one more time on my bicycle."

Elective Spotlight
First Aid & CPR - Nurse Black
The First Aid elective offered this 2nd quarter is off to a good start. We had the Palm Beach County Fire Rescue trucks here for the students to see first hand the equipment, medications, and rescue devices they carry with them. We watched a video of the Heimlich maneuver and then practiced hand placement on each other. The students should be confident that they will be able to help a person in need if they are choking. We also had Dr. deCardenas, a parent at All Saints and local Pediatric ER physician, visit the class with an awesome slide show of some very interesting medical emergencies. This is just a few of the many topics that we cover in order to prepare the students for their CPR class and certification test. Good luck to all of the students in the class as they work towards that CPR certification.

Former ASCS graduate returns to mentor students in Robotics Club
Matthew Meyer, a 2009 graduate of All Saints Catholic School, appreciates how things work and enjoys wrapping his head around finding solutions to problems. So much so, that this year he brings his enthusiasm and experience to share with the All Saints Robotics Club's seventh grade team nearly every Tuesday. Mr. Konrad and Mrs. Charlton, who supervise the group, appreciate his dedicated assistance. "Matt was one of my model students back in middle school," says Mrs. Charlton, "and I enjoy getting to see him now that he has moved on; his work ethic and easy-going personality are both still there. Even more importantly, Mr. Konrad and I appreciate his working relationship with our robotics team. Sometimes getting the information or explanation from someone who's actually competed in robotics competitions over the years is more valuable than what we can give them." "The kids like working with him and picking his brain to help develop solutions and strategies to difficult tasks they encounter on their project," adds Mr. Konrad. This year's challenge involves nutrition. Along with the mechanical tasks the robot must perform on the grid, team members will present their idea for reducing the amount of fertilizer on produce that comes to market. The team's first competition is December 10.

The French Connection
Bonjour from 5A and 5B!
We have enjoyed learning and exploring about the beautiful country of France. Discovering about the country's history, people, culture, and daily life. The students have now been exposed and learned basic expressions in French such as: greetings, classroom objects, numbers, colors, days of the week, and ordering food at a French bistro. We concluded our French studies by having a fabulous fte (party). Our 5th grade parents provided us with a cuisine that was trs bon!!! We enjoyed a variety of quiches, crpes, pastries, cheeses, soups, and delectable tartes aux fruits. French bubbly (apple cider) was a class favorite.
Merci, Merci, Merci to all !

Fourth Grade Mangrove Project
The fourth graders at All Saints Catholic School are participating in the "Mangroves in the Classroom" program, developed by Kids Ecology Corps and the Friends of the Lake Worth Lagoon, Inc. The goal of the program is to teach students about the importance of mangrove ecosystems and their role in the Lake Worth Lagoon through several hands-on, interactive activities. In class, the students used a watershed model to simulate the effects of everyday pollution on local waters, and brainstormed actions they could take to reduce it. While playing a game of "Mangrove Tangle" and creating a mural of mangrove life, they discovered the intricacy and interconnectedness of ecosystems. In addition, each student is raising his or her own mangrove seedling, which will later be planted at the South Cove Natural Area coastal restoration project. The program was brought to All Saints by three Jupiter High School students: Stephanie McCrate, Jennifer McCrate, and All Saints graduate Kierra Boyd (Class of 2009).
Last week, the fourth graders each wrote an essay on the importance of mangrove trees to coastal environments. The students all did a wonderful job! Special congratulations go out to the winners of the writing contest:
1st Place-Cora Gilbert
2nd Place-Chas Leal
3rd Place-Summer Dingle
Here is Cora's paper:
Mangroves
Just imagine your beautiful beach...now just a cliff. Now imagine all the wonderful beach condos...ruined. These are terrible thoughts, and if you don't want this to happen there is one simple solution-mangroves.
Mangroves are amazing. Really. They can prevent erosion. How? Their roots hold in the soil/sand so waves won't wash it out. Mangroves also protect us from storms. They clean our water, too. They do this how? Simple. When it rains they keep all the dirty things from going into an aquifer so our well water is cleaner.
They not only do things for us, the human society, but for the sea life, too! They provide homes for sea animals, such as young fish and seahorses. Since not many animals live in brackish water, and mangroves live in brackish water, it also serves young animals hiding spots in the mangrove roots. Mangroves provide nutrients for seagrass, also. Its leaves fall in the water, decay, and fertilize the grass. They can help produce peat soil, too.
Some unique facts about mangroves is that they are not only salt tolerant, but they also suck up salt!
Now that you know how awesome mangroves are, you should know they are protected. Do not cut down mangroves! Since mangroves are the key to a great beach, respect them. I hope you learned a lot about mangroves!

Student Spotlight Nolan Bailen
On Wednesday October 26, 2011, fourth grader, Nolan Bailen graduated from the Young Marines of Palm Beach boot camp program with the highest honor, a meritorious promotion to Private First Class based on his wealth of knowledge.
Nolan was the first recruit to score 100% on his final exam prior to graduation. Eric and Michelle Hill, who manage the entire Young Marine program on a volunteer basis, stated it was the first time in their 6 year tenure [26 recruit classes] that a recruit rendered a perfect score on the final exam.
The Young Marine program is not a precursor to a military career. Under the exemplary leadership of Eric and Michelle Hill, the Young Marines teaches all boys and girls from 8 through 18 years of age dedication, integrity, and self esteem. The Young Marines also provides history education, first aid lessons, and drug and alcohol awareness programs. It further teaches our children not to quit under adverse conditions and falter to peer pressure into making the wrong decisions.
As Nolan's parents have said, Nolan is proud to call himself a Young Marine, he is equally as proud to call himself a student at All Saints Catholic School.

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards
The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program recognizes middle level and high school youth solely on the basis of volunteer work in their communities. This nationwide program applauds deserving young volunteers and inspires young people to get involved in community service activities. This unique program provides an ideal opportunity to celebrate the spirit of volunteerism throughout the student body, and to recognize those students who have distinguished themselves through volunteer work on a local, state, and even national level.
All Saints Catholic School is proud to announce that Jordan Collins, sixth grade, received a Certificate of Merit for being recognized for her participation of volunteerism in the community. Jordan's main volunteering consists of involvement at school, in her church, and at Safe Harbor Animal Rescue. She began volunteering in the fourth grade at her school and has been volunteering ever since. Jordan participates in many activities at her church such as Christmas events, dinners, and Vacation Bible School. She also enjoys organizing bake sales and donating the funds to Safe Harbor Animal Rescue about three times a year.
Darby Webb, sixth grade, received a Certificate of Achievement and was chosen as All Saints Catholic School's representative for State Recognition and possible National Recognition. Darby's main volunteering consists of involvement at her church, community, and the American Cancer Society. At Darby's church, she helps in making sandwiches for the homeless regularly. Her church makes approximately 500 lunches for people less fortunate in our community who would otherwise go hungry. Darby enjoys helping with beach cleanups at the Friends of Jupiter Beach on the first Saturday of every month. After reading Chicken Soup for the Pre-Teen Soul, Darby was inspired to do a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. She and her friend, Rachel, raised more than $1,000.00 in order to raise awareness for prostate cancer. They wrote many letters to family and friends asking for sponsorships to donate to the Society, and in turn dedicated an entire day to a beach cleanup.
All Saints Catholic School is very proud of both of these students as they both exemplified excellence in volunteerism and community service. All Saints holds their service involvement at school, church, and community with great respect. It is students like these who place others before themselves and truly make a difference in the lives of others.

All Saints students make stage debut at Maltz Theatre
Two All Saints students will make their stage debut in Maltz Jupiter Theatre's musical 'Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat'
The blockbuster musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is just weeks away from its debut as the largest, most dazzling show ever at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre!
Nominated for multiple Tony Awards, the family-friendly musical will feature 18 multitalented professional performers, in addition to innovative design that showcases more than 100 dazzling costumes, colorful lighting and a versatile set.
The musical is particularly unique because the Theatre has included 240 local children in the show's children's ensemble - and two of those young cast members are All Saints students! Kendall Hughes and Molly Mahoney will soon be making their stage debut in the show.
The students were chosen through a series of high-profile First Step to Stardom auditions during the spring and fall. Groups of 30 will perform during each performance. To prepare the show's young performers for the material, the Theatre set up a special website featuring dozens of learning videos and audio files for all dances and songs, in addition to costume requirements, sheet music, schedules and more.
"As far as we know, this scale of teaching children their roles through technology has never done before," said Andrew Kato, the Theatre's artistic director. "As the largest regional theater in South Florida, I feel we have a responsibility to engage local families by ensuring that they have a place to be entertained, as well as a place to come and learn the 'art' of theater."
The show will run from November 29 - December 18. Click here for event information and ticket sales.

Reminder for Parking Lot Safety
At this time of the year Jupiter area schools have an upswing of school events on their campuses, All Saints is no different. With the extra events more parents are on site attending and helping at these many activities. Wanting everyone to be safe, the Jupiter police and we remind you that thieves are trolling parking lots looking for any valuables which may be visible in cars. It only takes moments to lose your purses, Christmas gifts, phones, computers, and other items. Please be sure to hide valuables and lock your car doors, always! It only takes a few minutes for the thieves and days of worries for the victim. Let's make it a safe holiday season for our All Saints' families.
