Des Moines Parks & Recreation joins Landmark on the Sound for Halloween at the Haunted Castle

Haunted Castle

Parks and Recreation has joined forces to offer fun and games at the Landmark on the Sound's Halloween at the Haunted Castle.  This combined event will replace the former Halloween Carnival at the Field House, so be sure to join the other boys and ghouls in the fun at Landmark on the Sound this Halloween.  Sunday, October 31st from 6:30-9pm the Landmark will become a Haunted Castle where guests come calling in search of George, the resident ghost.  Ride the elevator to the 5th floor, then take a haunted walk back to the lobby on the long, dark, winding ramp.  Expect plenty of spooky sights and hidden surprises.

In addition to the haunts, there will be a festive carnival room on the main floor appropriate for kids of all ages, complete with treats for all.

A $5/Adult or $2/Child suggested donation will be collected with all proceeds benefitting Des Moines Area Food Bank programs.  For more information on this event, contact Landmark on the Sound Event Coordinator Amber Fish at (206) 878-8434/ext. 103 or visit

Waterland Arts and Music Series presents ANZANGA

The Waterland Arts & Music Series is a three part series hosted by Des Moines Arts Commission and Highline Community College Music Department at Highline Community College Performing Arts Center/2400 S. 240th St., building 7.  The series brings renowned performers to our community at affordable ticket prices.  During the series, doors open 7pm and each performance is at 7:30pm.  Tickets cost $15/adult or $5/student (elementary through college).  Purchases of three or more adult tickets are discounted to $10/ticket.  Advance tickets are available at Des Moines Parks & Recreation (1000 S. 220th St.) or Des Moines Florist (721 S. 219th St).  Tickets are available at the door as well.

2010-11 kicks off with Seattle marimba ensemble ANZANGA.  Anzanga, which means "to our friends," draws its name and music from the rich cultural heritage of Africa, with traditional and contemporary marimba music from Zimbabwe, Mozambique, South Africa and Gambia, plus original compositions created and arranged in an African style by director Sheree Seretse.

Spag Night

Des Moines Activity Center's Spaghetti Night 2010 was a smashing success thanks to sponsor, Fernwood at the Park's Chef James White - whose culinary expertise tossed up a mouthwatering Caesar Salad, kept the tasty pasta sauce flowing and baked up a storm creating delicious home-made garlic bread and Italian fruit pastries! Volunteers Cordy Barney, Louise Preston, John McEvoy, Evie Bjorlo and Mary Ann Pray, Teen Council, Matt Thomfohrde, Brenda Kimball and Lyn Edwards worked behind the scene to keep the evening running smoothly. Thanks to all diners - you helped generate over $1000 in support of programs and services for older adults!
