Visual Magic Arts Workshop to visit After School Program Sites

Visual Magic Arts Workshop, a unique combination of arts and mentoring, will supplement activities at Des Moines Parks and Recreation after school program sites in the Highline School District in 2010-11.  Visual Magic is a six session arts workshop that is the senior thesis project for Big Picture High student Ciera Boyd.  Boyd has worked with mentor Nic Lind, Recreation Coordinator, since her sophomore year to develop her project, which has included research, program development, a pilot program in spring 2010, and curriculum evaluation.  The Big Picture High student is excited about the implementation phase set to begin on October 19th at North Hill Elementary school's after school program.

"I chose Visual Magic as my senior thesis project because art has been my passion and I want to be able to provide a way for students to focus and explore their creativity in a way that I wish I had been able to when I was their age; especially now when funding for art programs is extremely limited," said Boyd.

The program schedule will include Tues/Thurs visits to each after school program site for three weeks apiece, and a two week Visual Magic program at Pacific Middle School as part of the Recreation Elective at Community Schools Collaboration's after school program at Pacific.  Elementary aged Before and After School registration is ongoing during the school year, and scholarships are available on an as-needed basis.

Des Moines Creek TrailIt's time to volunteer with Friends of Des Moines Creek!

Fall is around the corner and so is an upcoming Des Moines Creek volunteer event!  This time, along with the fall spawners, we will be moving upstream. On November 6th, 2010 we are partnering with King County to enhance the creek buffer by planting and mulching in the upstream reach of Des Moines Creek between S 200th Street and Midway Sewer District!

What: A crazy cool planting project to continue improving the Des Moines Creek buffer
When: Saturday, November 6, 2010: 9am to 1pm (or later for the diehards!)
Where: The creek reach south of S 200th Street to Midway Sewer District (details and where to park to follow later)

Please email FriendsOfDesMoinesCreek@yahoo.com to sign up for the event, or phone Laura Hartema at 206-650-9001.
Des Moines Parks & Recreation joins Landmark on the Sound for Halloween at the Haunted Castle

Haunted Castle

Parks and Recreation has joined forces to offer fun and games at the Landmark on the Sound's Halloween at the Haunted Castle.  This combined event will replace the former Halloween Carnival at the Field House, so be sure to join the other boys and ghouls in the fun at Landmark on the Sound this Halloween.  Sunday, October 31st from 6:30-9pm the Landmark will become a Haunted Castle where guests come calling in search of George, the resident ghost.  Ride the elevator to the 5th floor, then take a haunted walk back to the lobby on the long, dark, winding ramp.  Expect plenty of spooky sights and hidden surprises.

In addition to the haunts, there will be a festive carnival room on the main floor appropriate for kids of all ages, complete with treats for all.

A $5/Adult or $2/Child suggested donation will be collected with all proceeds benefitting Des Moines Area Food Bank programs.  For more information on this event, contact Landmark on the Sound Event Coordinator Amber Fish at (206) 878-8434/ext. 103 or visit
