Visual Magic Arts Workshop to visit After School Program Sites Visual Magic Arts Workshop, a unique combination of arts and mentoring, will supplement activities at Des Moines Parks and Recreation after school program sites in the Highline School District in 2010-11. Visual Magic is a six session arts workshop that is the senior thesis project for Big Picture High student Ciera Boyd. Boyd has worked with mentor Nic Lind, Recreation Coordinator, since her sophomore year to develop her project, which has included research, program development, a pilot program in spring 2010, and curriculum evaluation. The Big Picture High student is excited about the implementation phase set to begin on October 19th at North Hill Elementary school's after school program. "I chose Visual Magic as my senior thesis project because art has been my passion and I want to be able to provide a way for students to focus and explore their creativity in a way that I wish I had been able to when I was their age; especially now when funding for art programs is extremely limited," said Boyd. The program schedule will include Tues/Thurs visits to each after school program site for three weeks apiece, and a two week Visual Magic program at Pacific Middle School as part of the Recreation Elective at Community Schools Collaboration's after school program at Pacific. Elementary aged Before and After School registration is ongoing during the school year, and scholarships are available on an as-needed basis.
